COPYRIGHTS APPLY IN ALL CASES.
ENSURE THAT YOUR ORGANISATION IS PROPERLY LICENSED
ACF is the exclusive Canadian public performance rights representative for numerous studios
and thousands of movies. We offer short term and annual public performance licenses that
allow for the presentation of commercially available movies in a public. No other rights
representative may offer licenses (in Canada) for the studios and movies we exclusively
represent in Canada.
The Copyright Act of Canada is the federal statute governing copyright law in Canada and it
regulates the public performance of commercially available movies across the country.
Additional information concerning copyrights in Canada may be obtained at:
http://www.cb-cda.gc.ca/societies-societes/index-e.html
In regards to movies, what is a public performance?
Essentially, a public performance is any type of movie presentation that occurs outside of a
private dwelling (your house, condo or apartment) or for audiences other than family and
friends. Example, if you show an outdoor movie in your backyard, but invite 100 people from
the neighborhood, then your event will be considered a public performance.
FAMILY MOVIE
NIGHTS
Family movie nights organized by parent councils, community associations or
other types of 3rd party groups require a public performance license, even if
these events are free or take place for just a few people.
Even if you present just one or a few movies during the year, you still need a
license. There are no exceptions.

CHARITY

No, the Canadian Copyright Act has been in

good cause?
A license is required in ALL cases, even if
movies are shown freely or as part of a
fundraiser.
Do all organizations require a license?
