BOYS WRAP UP SEASON WITH LAST SECOND ROAD WIN
As district play approaches, Coach Merritt and his staff are looking to refine and
groom the boys team for what lies ahead. What better way to enter the post
season than on the heels of a last second bucket for the win! On Monday the
Orioles travelled to Edgewood-Colesburg for a non-conference game, the last of
their regular season. Springville jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and took a
29-24 half time lead to the break. The boys weren’t able to really pull away, they
had a lead as big as 7 but the Vikings would put together a run and get right back
into it. So it was no surprise that the game was decided at the buzzer. Springville
had the ball for the last possession of the game which was tied at 50-50. With 1.8
seconds to go the Vikings fouled the Orioles in the front court to stop the clock.
Coach Merritt called time out and drafted one heck of a play that the boys ran to
perfection. With James Fitzgerald inbounding the ball on the sideline, Cavanaugh
Riley and Zach March cut toward each other to distract the defense and Fitzgerald
found Andrew Blakely all alone underneath the basket for the easy lay in and the
game winner. It was beautiful and with the 52-50 win, the O’s finish the season
with a 13-8 overall record, 7-5 in conference play.
Monday’s win felt much better than Friday when #1 North Linn visited the O’s on
Senior Night. Springville played even in the first quarter before the Lynx pulled
away in the second to go on to a 73-28 win. North Linn is an extremely talented
team and it will be fun to see how far they may go this winter.
Last Thursday was a non-conference home game with Dunkerton who entered
Machovec with a 16-3 record, averaging 67 points a game as well as averaging 24
three point attempts in a game. It was a fun, “run and gun” style game to watch
and the Orioles led through the first half until a cold third quarter allowed
Dunkerton to take the lead. The Raiders won the game by a final of 62-55.

the Iowa Valley Tigers and get to do so
right here at home. Game time is approximately 8pm as it is the second game
of a double-header on Thursday, February 16 inside Machovec. Let’s go O’s!
Lots of smiles after Blakely’s game winning put back on Monday, he
finished with 10 points. To the right is Riley going up for what would be a 3
point play at Ed-Co, he ended up with 15 points.
ORIOLE GIRLS SERVE NORTH LINN FIRST
LOSS OF THE YEAR...
Wednesday, February 8, 2017 Oriole Pride 2
There’s a lot to be said for a home game in front of a home crowd
and the girls team enjoyed an epic atmosphere during last Friday’s
win inside Machovec Gymnasium. The Lady O’s played hostess to
the visiting North Linn Lynx who entered the contest undefeated and
tops in the Tri-Rivers West Conference. North Linn had already
clinched the conference title but vengeance was on the mind of
Springville as the Lynx handed the Orioles their first loss of the
season in early January. It is only fitting that the O’s return the favor
in front of a full house as well as a television audience.
A 21-16 half time deficit was forgotten quickly when the girls turned
the third quarter into their own display of Oriole basketball.
Springville outscored the Lynx 13 to 8 to tie up the game headed into
the final frame. The lead see sawed back and forth with momentum
playing favorites on every other possession. North Linn took the
lead, 41-40 with just 26 ticks on the clock. Springville maintained
their poise and with 20 seconds left, they worked the ball around to
Mikayla Nachazel who hit a short baseline jumper to put the Orioles
on top, 42-41. The Lynx had time to put up a last second shot of
their own but it was no good and Nachazel was there for the
rebound. Their ensuing foul gave her a trip to the free throw line
and she made good on one toss to make the final score an Oriole
42-41 victory!
On Monday the girls had a road trip to Edgewood Colesburg to play
an 8-12 Vikings team. Springville wasn’t necessarily flawless but
Menster tallied 4 steals and 20 points against
they were impressive none the less, only allowing more than 7 Ed-Co North Linn on Friday.
points in one of the four
quarters. The Orioles dismissed the home team 58-33 with 7 of the 10 girls on the
roster finding the scoring column.
Springville now prepares for a home stand in tournament play. They’ll play HLV
on Tuesday at 7pm on their home court. HLV enters the contest with an 8-14
record. As a team they average 37 points a game and have four seniors, two of
whom average 9 points a game. Your Lady Orioles average 58 points a game,
they hold their opponent to an average of 26 points a game and they have two
girls averaging nearly 20 points a ball game. Stats don’t mean much however at
this point in the season. We’ll see you
Tuesday night, bring your sweetheart and
share some caramel corn as you cheer on the
girls as they make their run toward Title Town.

THIRD ANNUAL ARCHERY INVITATIONAL HOSTED BY ORIOLES
Springville Archery Coach Gary Biles
was a busy guy this past weekend.
He credits the success of the third
annual archery tournament to the
many parent volunteers and
students working at the
tournament. Approximately 650
archers representing 15
programs from across east central
Iowa and one program from Illinois
competed in the day long
tournament. Due to the large
number of archers, two gyms were
used to accommodate all of the participants.
The top three middle school archers for Springville in their division were Alexis McKinney with a score of 270, followed by
Kailee Jacobs and Tegan Goehring who both shot a score of 266. In the middle school boys division, Holden Cordes shot a
270, followed by Grant Gloeckner’s 267 and Hunter LaGrange’s 261. The middle school team shot a score of 3,090, which
was only 5 points below their season high. In the high school girls division, Haley Kirchmann’s 278 was the high score for
Springville, followed by Kylie Mysak’s 275 and Jacinde’ Lillard’s 273. In the boys division, Dalton Hawker’s 278 was the high
for Springville, followed by Evan Corum’s 269 and Tanner Malanaphy’s 263. The high school team shot another all-time
high score of 3,204. (Photo provided by Angie Gloeckner)
