1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Alexander the Great stood with his army on the western shore of the Tigris River. He and his men
had marched north from Tyre, crossing acres and acres of blackened land. Darius III had made his
soldiers burn to the ground the long wheat grass that had been growing there. He had hoped to
slow the advance of Alexander and his mighty fighting force. Darius‘s strategy had done little to
delay the progress of the Greek forces. The Greeks prepared now to cross the Tigris and to
continue onward toward the village of Mosul. They knew that Darius III and the Persian warriors
were camped nearby on the plain of Gaugamela. They remained unaware of Darius‘s newest
tactic. When Alexanderand his men reached the plain of Gaugamela, they found that the ground
had been made level. The Persian chariots stood in formation, ready to attack across that flat
surface. Darius expected his scythed chariots to propel themselves forcefully into the Greek
forces, with their curved blades ripping at the flesh of both horses and men.
The chariots began their rapid drive toward the army of Alexander the Great. The Greek general,
having made a quick assessment of the situation, ordered the ranks of the Greek fighters to split
apart. This maneuver left the Persians moving forward without having anyone to mow down.
Because they travelled at great speed, the Persians, could not turn around. Caught between
enemy lines, many Persian chariot drivers fell victim to the spears and arrows of their Greek
opponents. Still, Darius was not ready to surrender. He spotted places where his men could
outflank the Greeks, sneaking around behind the enemy ranks. However, Alexander the Great
seemed to be unfazed. The Greek general ordered the cavalry, to form a wedge. The point of the
wedge charged directly at Darius. The Persian King fled, leading to a collapse of whatever
resistance he had managed to muster. Alexander the Great again emerged as the victor.
Alexander‘s first impulse was to direct his men on a chase after the fleeing Darius. He chose,
instead, to go south to Babylon, where he allowed his men to have one month of rest. From there
Alexander headed his army east toward the treasures that lay central Persia.

If to heaven we are all equal
Why do we divide?
Why do we race to beat each other?

THIMMAKKA AND HER CHILDREN
Thimmakka and her husband BikkaluChikkaiah, a childless couple of Hulikal village in Karnataka,
decided to adopt children. But the children they chose to rear were 284 banyan trees along a 3 km
stretch of what is now National Highway 48 in Karnataka. The tress filled up a void in their lives.
And just recently, Thimmakka received the National Citizens Award (for social forestry).
Thimmakka tired of her neighbours‘s jibes directed at her childlessness hit upon the plan. ―Why
not plant banyan trees and rear them like our children?‖ she thought. So the lonely couple decided
to plant trees. Thimmakka‘s husband was a disabled person, hence she had to work as a labourer
every day and did not have the time for much else. But firm in their resolve, they took great pains
to dig pits on either side of the road. Their next task was to choose suitable banyan saplings. They
finally planted 300 saplings and put up thorny bushes around, to ensure that the cattle did not eat
up the tender trees.
Thimmakka brought water in pots from a long distance and poured it at the foot of the saplings
every day. During the rainy season, she poked at the roots of the trees to make them go deep
and, as the area was not fenced, she kept a constant vigil and nursed the plant for ten years. It
was time spent well, as it gave her fulfilment and pride. Even as the couple nursed the saplings,
she was working in a quarry for their hand—to—mouth existence. If she could not go to the quarry
they would have nothing to eat that day. True, her work backbreaking, but she could not neglect
the trees either. She would go to the Kundur road and attend to the saplings before the break of
dawn. And the trees, like children who live in an atmosphere of love and care, responded to her
call and grew up. Now in the prime of their lives, the 284 that took root provide a green canopy for
3 km, nestling place for birds and also prevent soil erosion. They are also worth an estimated Rs.
85 crore.

DID POOR HEATING KILL ZOO’S KING COBRA?
New Delhi: The king is dead, but he has not left without controversy. One of Delhi zoo‘s star
attraction, a 14—feet king cobra died recently leaving in its wake questions over the exact cause
of its death. Although zoo officials claim that the snake died due to old age, wildlife activists feel
that if zookeepers took enough care, the slithering beauty could have been saved. A wildlife
activist involved in rescue and relocation of animals in zoos said, ―It was one of the finest
specimens in captivity in India. The king cobra is primarily a cold-blooded animal; it needs to be
provided proper heating arrangement during winters. The Delhi zoo has got electric heaters for the
reptile house. These dehydrate the animal, exposing it to various health hazards‖.
The king cobra was reported to be from the jungles of Arunachal Pradesh but was seized from
snake charmers near Haryana and handed over to the National Zoological Park (NZP) by an
NGO. The snake was quarantined for a month, before being released into a public display
enclosure. Apart from using heaters for every animal house, the zoo had for the first time, fitted
infrared lights in the reptiles‘ enclosures.
What has put zoo officials in a tizzy is the fact that this is not the first time that the zoo has lost a
king cobra. ―It is sheer negligence and lack of knowledge on the part of officials. The animal
should have been provided with ceramic heaters rather than electric ones,‖ said an expert.
When contacted, NZP director BS Bonal said: ―These are false reports doing the rounds. The
post—mortem has clearly said that it died due to pneumonia owing to old age. We had provided it
with the best of facilities and I don‘t see any reason other than this for its death‖.
