Dialogue and the Difficult Questions: Can we understand each other? A WORKSHOP SPONSORED BY THE CENTER FOR EDUCATION IN DIALOGUE of the Focolare Movement Mariapolis Luminosa, Hyde Park, New York August 15 (9:00 a.m.) – August 16 (after lunch), 2015 At work, at school, or whenever we turn on the computer, we seem to be barraged by a host of difficult questions, and the sense that daily life is permeated by deep disagreement with others, even in our families, parishes and communities. Various forms of media seem to heighten the sense “of talking past” each other and that it is close to impossible to understand one another across these cultural, social, religious and political differences. Registration & Information: [email protected] Please register by Aug. 9, 2015 with attached form Cost for meals and lodging at Luminosa (first come), includes registration fee: Is it possible to dialogue even when our conversations turn to difficult questions and areas of strong disagreement? Sat am to Sun after lunch: $100 Fri dinner - Sun after lunch: $145 How can we maintain our principles and vision of what is good for our communities and for our society in the midst of these difficult and painful tensions? How can we build open, loving, trusting relationships, even when we disagree? Cost for students: Sat am to Sun after lunch: $75 Fri dinner - Sun after lunch: $110 This weekend aims to explore these questions and to help us develop and refine the listening and dialogue skills that can foster constructive, respectful and open communication even across profound difference. Sessions will include interactive exercises in which participants will be able to practice the proposed tools as we go along, as well as share their concerns and questions. By putting the steps of dialogue into practice together, we also hope to gain knowledge of our own blind spots and a deeper understanding of others’ perspectives. We will also explore the role of media and Catholic Church teaching in our dialogue efforts. Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon the completion of the workshop. Background Preparation: Do your own “warm up” dialogue experience with a family member, friend or colleague by using the discussion questions available here, based on 5 Steps to Positive Political Dialogue by Amy Uelmen: http://www.focolare.org/usa/files /2015/02/Five-Steps-DiscussionQuestions.pdf Dialogue and the Difficult Questions: Can we understand each other?
