YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU BY VERONICA DRAKE YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU! Have you ever tried to spray a garden hose when it had a kink in it? What happens? The water trickles out or worse yet doesn't come out at all. The pressure is on full force but the water isn't flowing. Is this what life feels like for you? You are operating on full pressure and trying to express life but the blockages are getting in the way and life feels unfulfilled, and overwhelming. In order for the water to flow freely through the hose you need to find and correct the kink in the hose. Once you straighten out the kink the water will naturally flow. It knows its way, it's guided to flow the course it's on. This is exactly what the Creator wants for you; to flow naturally on your course, your destiny, your path. Are you flowing freely through life? Think back to the last time your gas light was on in your car. Did you have a sense of security that you were going to get to your destination? Probably not! Did you trembled and fret every time you put your foot on the accelerator? Is that what everyday life is beginning to feel like? Thoughts of - am I going to get where I am going? Do I even know where I want to go? YOU-OLOGY is the study of YOU. Enjoy creating awareness, acceptance and appreciation for who you are. By knowing who you are you will know what YOU want. Begin to live life by design not by default! YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Module One Personal Inventory ~ Asking yourself questions during a personal inventory is a fascinating and revealing process. Some questions will be more difficult to process than others. That simply means a major area of growth has been identified for you. These questions are to help you recognize the theme of your life: How is your life structured? What do you put most attention on? Are you satisfied with how your life is structured? What’s working? What’s not working? What choices create the structure of your life? What choices do you want to add/change to your life? YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Module Two Who Are You Naturally? To Realize: To bring into reality; make real Realization. First you have to “know” that something is missing, off balance, not quite what it needs to be. You need to wake up to your life. So many times people walk around oblivious to what IS and they typically blame outside sources for their perceived “bad time”. What are some signs that something isn’t quite right? If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then it’s time to open your eyes to what IS. Then you have to decide what steps to put in place to create the life you desire. o Cranky/short tempered o Pressured o Impatient/rushed o Intolerant o Tired/always feeling runned down o Overwhelmed YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Questions to help create the awareness around the life you are really living. Who do I surround myself with? Do they support the highest part of me? Am I kind? What do I do to nurture myself? What do I do to grow? What are my dreams? Have my dreams fulfilled? What do I stand for? What am I willing to die for? Live for? What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? What are my fears? By contemplating on these questions you will begin to create a deeper sense of knowing. Self analysis is the key to realization. Jump ahead 50 years and write the story of your life. Think out of the box. Define who you are, what traits and characteristics do you admire. Speak to your integrity and generosity. What contributions have you made to the world, what talents have you developed and shared over the years. Write the story you want told about you in 50 years. EGO plays no part in this exercise this is an exercise to see who you are and you will always be. Honesty and self love will guide you as you write, I promise. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU More to Think About ~ Who are you first thing in the morning when you wake up? Describe what comes most natural to you without even thinking? Notice throughout your day how that natural greatness shows up. Share a few examples. What are you most outstanding personality traits? What personality traits would you want to tune up or release? Who were you three years ago? Describe character, values, goals, beliefs. Etc Who you are now? Who do you want to become? Who you are no longer called to be YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Module Three VALUES To Release: To free from something that binds, or holds back; let go Release. Identifying the need to release what’s no longer serving you is the step to freedom. Either you release it or you don’t it’s that simple. You will know by the checking back with the symptoms in step one if you’ve completely released. The Releasing process • Embrace your greatest good (why you came here) Define the greatest good in your reality: spiritually and energetically. There is a force constantly at work in the universe; energy connected to our greatest potential in any situation. What is YOUR greatest potential in this given situation? What Soul lesson do you need to experience at this moment in time? This “knowing” comes through your intuition. Keep your vision on your greatest good; found at a Soul Level • Explore perceptions Become the “other person” and try on their version. Could there be another way to see a situation? What did they come here to learn from this interaction? Is it the fact that your best friend was talking about you or is it REALLY the way YOU feel about the friend talking behind your back. Did your friend simply bump into an already bruised area of your life? • Eliminate distractions Simplify your thoughts. Gain clarity and grace by eliminating mind chatter. Practice meditation and connecting to Source • Engage your Soul Tune in to your intuition (the quiet voice or subtle pang inside of you) and ask what you need to do to live Soul- fully at this given moment in time. Simply ask yourself who would I be without this thought? YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU The Intuitive Voice Method How to access your unique inner voice. When you follow this recipe you will feel instant change happen. You will begin to desire time with yourself and solitude will bring you happiness. Answers appear and what grows inside of you feels softer, kinder, and more manageable. Get Quiet – place yourself in surroundings that are soothing and hold special meaning to you. Take inventory – Identify the one issue that is the loudest; one issue that keeps you awake at night or follows you throughout your day. Gently release the others. Imagine you are packing them away on a shelf or tying them to a balloon that is carrying them far away for now. No worries they will return you are not ignoring them forever. Drop Inside – Simple ask yourself what wants to be revealed with regard to issue you identified – what does it want to say to you? Allow yourself not to censor what you are feeling and thinking. Become the observer – Allow yourself to “sit with” the feeling/ thought. Be mindful of how it shows up in your actions/behaviors. Just watch, do not become overwhelmed with the thought. You are merely an observer Practice acceptance – allow whatever is there to be there; treat it as if it were your friend (in reality it is). When we judge or avoid what IS we create more of the same. Allow whatever is presenting itself to simple be. Talk to the feeling like you would your best friend. Be compassion, understanding, and accepting of what you are feeling. No running, no excuses.. just accept and allow. After you experience the shift (it doesn’t feel so heavy) ask what your next course of action should be. Be mindful to really surrender to the process. This inner voice will never cause panic or make you feel afraid. If those feelings come in simply ask them to leave. Breathe through it and shift them out. Don’t wait one more minute. Try this process today and begin to experience the joy you were meant to experience. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Following are some examples of values. Identify your top five. Use those top five to help you answer next set of questions. This list is simply a guideline please use all words you feel connected to. Truth Friendship Knowledge Achievement Generosity Love Altruism Happiness Loyalty Charity Health Pleasure Cooperation Honesty Positive attitude Creativity Honor Power Dignity Hope Recognition Economic Humility Relationships Emotional Well-being Independence Respect Equality Inner peace Safety Excellence Integrity Self-worth Faith Joy Service Family Justice Simplicity Freedom Kindness Trust YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU What are my values at this stage in my life? What do I need now that I never needed before? What do I no longer need? What do I need to do now? What do I no longer need to do? My Vision of Who I AM PURPOSE: To create your own personal vision statement using your intuition. Step #1: Identify Your Actions/Values Time: no more than 5 minutes In “identify your actions,” select action words (verbs) that will be incorporated into your vision statement. Every vision requires action and action words are verbs. Select 3 verbs that most inspire you. Let your intuition be your guide. Step #2: Identify Your Core Values Time: no more than 5 minutes Values are the foundation of our behavior. They define what is most important to us. Our values are the driving force behind our decisions, our work, and our relationships. Discovering your values can be an invaluable tool in finding your purpose. Our actions are driven by our values. Select 3 values. Take a moment and check in with your intuitive Self. Would you be willing to devote your life to these values? What is at the core of your being? Step #3: Connecting Value & Action Time: no more than five minutes During this portion of the activity, you will determine how well your chosen actions and values function together in a vision statement. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Now that you have selected your values and your actions, it is important to see if they are compatible. Combine each action with your chosen values to see if they “make sense” when working together in a sentence or phrase. In the event that one or more verbs do not make sense when paired with the core values, it is important to determine which of the two words is more “true” to who you are. Keep that word, set aside the other, and identify a stronger word to replace it. One of the alternate words you selected may be a better choice. It is important to identify what it is about the word that you like. Does is represent what you really want to do? Step #4: Identify Your Cause Time: no more than five minutes In the “identify your cause” phase of the activity, you are challenged to identify the causes to which you are committed. YOUR Cause To create a strong vision statement, it is important to have a sense of clarity on whom you really want to serve, inspire, learn from, and impact in a positive way. Pick the 3 causes that most appeal to you. Step #5: Putting it all Together Time: no more than five minutes Now that you have identified your actions, values and passions(cause), it’s time to pull it all together into a vision statement. Your vision is the sum of these three components: verbs, values, and cause. Spend the next few minutes reflecting upon what you have done thus far and think about what you really want to be about. What purpose do you have for your life? Listen to the “still, small voice” within and, using your verbs, values and cause, try to articulate what your heart is saying. Pulling it together Vision = Verbs + Core Value(s) + Clans(s) Review the verbs, core value(s), and clans you have selected—listen to your inner voice. What is your heart saying to you? Based on what you “hear,” use the equation above [Vision = Verbs + Core Values(s) + Clan(s)] to write a 1-2 sentence vision statement. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU One “test” of a good vision statement is to determine if it is inspiring, exciting, clear, true, and engaging. As you read through the statement you have written mentally respond to the following questions: o Is it you? o Is it true? o Does it make sense? o Is it inspiring? o Does it excite you? o Does it excite others? (ASK others for feedback!) o Would you be willing to dedicate your life to this and only this? FINAL STEP: Final Statement YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Module Four RELATIONSHIPS All relationships are work. But the relationship that takes the most work is the one you have with yourself. We don’t typically think about having a relationship with ourselves in the way we think about traditional relationships that we have with other people and that is exactly why I create this program. I cannot emphasis enough how important the relationship with yourself is. One of my favorite sayings is, everywhere you go there you are! Who do I want in my life? What do I bring to my current relationship? Is this a relationship that empowers me? Do I empower this person or enable them? Do I value this individual in my life fully and completely? How do I show it? Do I want to nurture this relationship and if so, what will that require? Does this person value me? How do they show me? Does this relationship require hard work or does it bring me great delight? Does this relationship support my highest and greatest good? Share examples. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Module Five SELF CARE What do I value about myself? What am I doing to take care of myself? What kind of people am I surrounding myself with? If I had no fears what one thing would I like to accomplish in my lifetime? I value my health and as a result What gifts do I possess that I have kept hidden? What you are willing to do today to live outside the box. Reverence: A feeling of profound awe and respect and often love - honor or respect felt or shown Reverence = Self Care. Reverence is to recognize and honor the presence of the sacred in everything. Being grateful is a way to show respect or honor to your higher power. Having an attitude of gratitude or how I may serve supports reverence. Show appreciation for WHAT IS by accepting WHAT IS. Set aside quiet time to commune with your higher power. Your mind has so many thoughts and it is nearly impossible to shut it all off. Do not be hard on yourself. Focusing on your breathing is a classic way to get your mind silent; if a thought floats in simply ask it to leave and return to conscious breathing. Ask that a state of mental relaxation becomes you. If you are hard on yourself you completely defeat the purpose of this exercise. Love and honor exactly where you are; simply allow yourself the gift of acceptance. Release any negative thoughts through breath and take in thoughts or joy and kindness through the breath. When you practice stillness you will begin enjoying communion with your Creator in only the way that you can. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to have a relationship with Source. This story comes from the Buddhist teachings and describes beautifully the stilling the mind. It is said that a most intelligent man once came to the Zen Master Nannin seeking YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU answers to the mystery of life. Being a professor of philosophy, the man's queries about God and meditation were endless. The master listened in silence. When the man had temporarily exhausted his requests, the master said, "You look tired. Having climbed this high mountain and traveled to this far away place. Come and rest, while I prepare you tea." Although his mind boiled with questions, the professor waited while the tea brewed. As its rich aroma filled the room the Master said, "Be patient. Don't be in such a hurry. Who knows? Even by drinking tea, your questions may be answered." At this the professor began to doubt the wisdom of the teacher. He began wondering if his entire journey had been a waste of time. This man seems mad, he thought. What do my questions about God and the divine have to do with tea? Yet the professor was indeed tired, as the master had perceived, and if he was soon to descend this mount he needed refreshment. The Master brought the kettle, poured the tea in the cup and the tea started overflowing into the saucer. The professor was startled by the clumsiness and amazed when the master continued to allow the tea to flow until the saucer also was filled. Just one more drop and the tea would start flowing onto the table and the floor. The professor exclaimed, "Stop! What are you doing! Can't you see the cup is full and the saucer is full?" Nannin replied, "That is the exact condition you find yourself in. "Your mind is so full of questions that even if I answer, you don't have any space to receive the wisdom. Since you entered this palace, your questions have overflowed. This small abode is filled with your questions. "Return from whence you came, empty your cup and then come. If you are to fulfill your desire to know the great mysteries of life, you must first create a space for them to enter." YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU Stilling your mind is essential for communion. It is very difficult to have communion, to have a conversation, whether it is with God or a friend, when there is no time of stilling your mind. For communion, there must be a time of receiving what the other has to give. Stilling the mind is essential to those seeking the revelation of God. This is ultimately what we strive for when we practice meditation. This is WHY we meditate. Guidance, wisdom. We call ourselves human beings when in reality we are spiritual beings. You are a soul and your essence is spirit. You begin to know and live this truth as you reveal God in your consciousness and your life. Meditation is the time and space you make daily for God in your life. There are many purposes for meditation. • Once of them is greater awareness of who you are and your purpose for existence. • To be able to experience complete joy and peace is a reason to meditate. • To have a greater sense of caring about yourself and other people is also a reason to meditate. • To revitalize your mind, your body, and your spirit is a benefit of meditation. Your prayers are an integral part of your well-being. Every religion in the world has some form of prayer that is taught. Prayer is the capacity to state what you desire. Meditation is the skilled, stilling of the mind to receive an answer. There is another story I'd like to share with you about prayer that I found personally, as a teacher, insightful, and perhaps you will derive inspiration as well. It is said that one of the great spiritual Masters, Moses, once came upon a man who was praying. The man's prayer sounded so strange that Moses stopped. As he listened, he realized the man's prayer was insulting to God. "Let me come close YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU to you," the man prayed, "and I promise to clean your body when it is dirty. If lice are there, I will take them away. And I am a good shoemaker. I will make you perfect shoes. "Nobody looks after your needs Lord. I will make sure your needs are met. If you fall ill, I will serve you and bring to you what will cleanse you of sickness. I know how to cook and I will prepare lavish feasts of nourishment for you." Enraged, Moses interrupted the man shouting, "Stop! Stop! You heresy. What are you saying? That God has lice on his body? That God's clothes are dirty and that you will clean them? That God can be ill and have need for food that you will cook for him? Who taught you this prayer?" Stunned, the man tearfully replied, "No one taught me this prayer. I have not learned it from anywhere. I am very poor and I am very uneducated and I don't know how to pray. I have made it up from the thing I know. "Life troubles me very much, so it must trouble God. Sometimes the food I find is not very good and my stomach aches. God must also suffer in this way sometimes. This is just my own experience that has become my prayer, but if you know the right prayer please teach me." Filled with compassion, Moses taught the man the right prayer. The man bowed down to Moses, thanking him as tears of deep gratitude flowed from his eyes. The man departed and Moses was very pleased at this opportunity to help another to see his error and learn the correct way to pray. While Moses slept, God appeared to him in a dream. His voice filled with anger, God said, "I sent you there to bring people closer to me but now you have thrown away one of my greatest lovers. This right prayer you have taught him will keep him from me. He will now only repeat the words you have told him. "Those words will be a barrier between his spirit and mine. It is not a prayer at all."Prayer has nothing to do with law. Prayer is the love. Love is a law onto itself. It needs no other law. "Know that my servant, with love comes grace. With love comes truth. Truth is the liberation of the spirit."Your prayers are important in meditation. Prayer is a very personal process and one that is never done incorrectly. What matters is that your prayer comes from your heart. Take a few moments and write what’s in your heart at this very moment. YOU-OLOGY ~ The Study of YOU I’d like to invite you to take a few moments to gather all your thoughts and imagine yourself packing them gently away in a box on a shelf. Remind yourself they will be safe there and if you choose to you may go back and get them later. Find a comfortable place to sit and begin to call your attention to your breath. Focus on two words: JUST & THIS On the inhale say the word JUST and on the exhale say the word THIS JUST … THIS…JUST…THIS…JUST..THIS…. After about 10 minutes turn your awareness to your heart and ask yourself 2 questions: WHO AM I? WHAT DO I WANT? Be open to receive whatever comes forth. In closing The only real way to find your voice is to dig deep into who you know yourself to be. Most people are so busy running around just trying to keep up with the "story" of who they are they never take time to look for their truth. All the work I do focuses on helping you feel better emotionally, physically and spiritually.. I know firsthand they are all tied together.. if one is off they're all off.
