VISION: We believe our community can move beyond
poverty and oppression to a place where all people have
access to quality housing, nutritious food, equal justice and
opportunities to thrive.
VALUES: We are committed to working with compassion,
integrity, accountability, creativity and an anti-oppression

PRESIDENT & CEO
JUSTICE to End Poverty
Dear friends,
For more than 40 years, Solid Ground has helped
people overcome poverty and thrive. In that time,
we’ve provided direct services to hundreds of
thousands of our neighbors – but we know that
providing services only goes so far.
If we want to effectively address poverty in
our community, we need to work for JUSTICE –
housing, food, economic and racial – and justice in
many other forms as well.
That’s why Solid Ground has always combined
our services with advocacy to achieve broad-based
social justice for our program participants and our
community. And that’s why we provide leadership and
support for coalition efforts to end the displacement
of people living on low incomes ... to guarantee
livable wages in Washington state ... to end the abusive
practices of predatory lenders ... and to increase
access to affordable housing and healthy food.
Life in King County in 2015 can truly be the
best of times or the worst of times, depending
on the color of your skin and the zip code in
which you reside.
We live in a region of increasing income disparity and
face incredible challenges managing our growth while
expanding access and opportunities for people of
color, immigrants and others who face tremendous
barriers to thriving.
As a foundational participant in the King County
10-Year Plan to End Homelessness, we have
helped our community secure homes for 36,000
households. We work every day to address structural
barriers such as the lack of affordable housing, as
well as unfair tenant screening practices that prohibit
many residents from getting approved for housing.
Housing, food, economic and racial justice are
really all about the same thing: They stem from
the fundamental rights to which we are all
entitled.
Our Constitution tells us that life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness are inherent and inalienable
rights – yet we witness daily how these promises are
broken in ways that trap people in poverty.
JUSTICE for all.
And while we want it NOW, we take counsel in
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s reminder that:
“The arc of the moral universe is long,
but it bends towards justice.”

Our community is experiencing an affordable housing
crisis unlike any we’ve previously seen.
A huge increase in competition for affordable units means that people with spotty credit history,
Solid Ground’s housing advocates bridge a connection between the people seeking housing
and local landlords and property managers to help overcome these barriers. In addition, we rely

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH
In our early days, running a food bank was the way to
fight hunger in our community.
We did that, and we did it very well. But along the way, we realized that food security takes more
than applying a band-aid to temporarily ease hunger: It’s about giving people the tools and skills
they need to improve their own food security. So in addition to delivering 7,641,085 pounds of
food to 21 food banks across Seattle last year, we also addressed the root causes of hunger by
empowering our community to know, grow and eat healthy food. Our food programs work with
school children, families and community groups alike to help people access better nutrition, grow
and cook their own food on a budget, and lead healthier lives.
