Digital Happenings at Your Library
Although the Santa Clarita Public Library has physical branches in
Canyon Country, Newhall and Valencia, did you know a fourth
library exists completely online? It’s our eLibrary and it’s
accessible at SantaClaritaLibrary.com/eLibrary! All you need
to access the eLibrary is your library card and an internet
connection. Without stepping into a library building you can
“check-out” eBooks, download audiobooks and music, read digital
magazines, stream video and use electronic resources for research and
homework—all for free! The eLibrary allows you to access our resources from wherever you are,
whenever you like!
The digital experience doesn’t end here; get your digital learning on with our
Digital Literacy program! Our goal is to provide digital training in a variety of technology,
software and apps for everyone at all skill levels from beginner to advanced. To highlight one course,
the “Ayuda con Tareas Para Padres” is a Spanish version of Homework Help Parent Edition which
teaches parents English, basic computer skills and parenting skills. This service is offered as part of
the weekly “Digital Drop In” program at your local branch. Just bring in your hand held digital device
and learn something new! This April we will be offering classes on Excel, WordPress, Cloud
Computing and more! Visit SantaClaritaLibrary.com/Events for the latest offerings!
Have you visited the new MakerSpace on the second
floor of the Old Town Newhall Library? We’ve recently
partnered with a local Eagle Scout to set up one of the
first MakerSpace’s in Santa Clarita. From 3-D printers to
Raspberry Pi, Makey Makeys to Snap Circuits and
soldering kits, this library of technology is open to all
“makers” in the community to explore new technical
skills. Do you have a technical skill you want to share? Is
there something you would like to learn? Let us know at [email protected].
All Santa Clarita Clarita Public Libraries will be closed Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.
Librarian’s Corner
By Chris Baker, Senior Children’s Librarian, Old Town Newhall Library
As Senior Children’s Librarian, I draw from my knowledge and experience as an educator and
early literacy advocate to guide a team at our Library’s Newhall branch that provides parents
with the tools necessary to ensure that children, birth - age 5, are well prepared to enter school
and succeed.
To this end, the children’s team engages families in a variety of Storytimes, each designed to
help children reach early literacy milestones through reading and play. It is my great joy, as a
Children’s Librarian, to encourage parents to bond with their little ones over a love of reading.
Our early childhood programming expands beyond Storytimes to include both Tinkerlab and
Dance Party. Programs such as these allow children to refine motor skills while exploring simple
science, engineering and music, all of which better prepares them for successful school entry.
Each fall, our Annual Family Literacy Festival further engages families to investigate books and
learning in unique and exciting ways. Through STEAM-based play children and parents discover
the fun in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.
As we swing into spring we look forward to Summer Reading. Our wide variety of summer reading activities offers something for children and
adults of all ages. Help us prevent summer learning loss by completing the 5 Book Summer Challenge. Every child, from birth through
elementary school, every teenager and every adult in the Santa Clarita community is invited to participate.
Join us this summer for over a hundred different activities. From Storytimes to Family Bingo, Sports Trivia to Operation Art, from Summer Study
Hall to entertaining performers, Marble Runs to Block Parties, from Pixel Pals to Scavenger Hunts, Life-Size Games to Tournament Day, and
books, books, books we’ll help you find the right fit for you and your family this summer. Don’t miss out on all the fun happening at your
Santa Clarita Public Library!
