DNANET ® Forensic Marking and Recovery Kit Instructions forensic tagging systems 1. Upon acquisition or recovery of tactically marked items, use your UV 375nm flashlight to identify any tactical forensic marks on the property. These marks will glow a bright red - that lets you know it’s an ADNAS mark (Fig 1). Anything that’s blue, white, green or just a dull brown are NOT ADNAS DNA marks. 2. Once you find tactical marks on a piece of property you now need to collect a sample of that mark and send it to Applied DNA Sciences labs in Stony Brook, NY for authentication. Figure 1 3. Remove the entire contents of the forensic marking and recovery kit from its package (Fig 2). 4. Carefully lay out all of the included items on the table. Each kit should contain (3 evidence bags, 3 sample bags, 1 chain of custody form, 5 swab kits (10 swabs total), 1 mailing envelope, 1 instruction sheet, 1 pair rubber gloves, 1 evidence tape, and 3 bottles of MEK (Methyl-Ethyl Ketone - both hazardous and flammable!). 5. Make sure your work area is clean and clear of any debris. Note: The following steps should be followed to collect a forensic sample from a SINGLE piece of property. Repeat this process for each additional piece of property collected during your operation. Figure 2 Note: Be sure to use a new bottle of MEK for each piece of property you are swabbing 6. Open up both packages of swabs and lay out 3 swabs in front of you. 7. Make sure the property to be sampled is in front of you and that the mark is accessible. 8. Carefully open one of the bottles of MEK. Take the first of 3 swabs and dip generously into the bottle of MEK (Fig 3). 9. Gently rub the MEK coated swab over the identified DNA mark (Fig 4). Figure 3 10. To verify the acquisition of the DNA shine your UV light on the tip of the swab and it should glow red (Fig 5). 11. Place the swab into the clear sample bag (not the evidence bag). 12. Using a permanent marker please note on the clear bag a simple description of the property marked and the defendant it was recovered from 13. Repeat steps 9 through 12 for all 3 swabs placing them in the same clear sample bag (Fig 6). Note: If you are associating multiple forensic samples from multiple pieces of property to a single suspect you may use one evidence bag for all of those samples (each 3 swab sample in its own clear bag marked with a permanent marker). If you are associating multiple samples with multiple suspects then each suspect should receive their own tamper proof evidence bag. Figure 4 14. Place up to 3 individual clear sample bags inside the single tamper proof evidence bag provided. 15. Fill out highlighted fields on the evidence bag (see reverse for details) 16. Fill out highlighted fields on the Chain of Custody form (see reverse for details) 17. Remove the backing from the tamper resistant evidence bag and seal the bag. You may remove the receipt tag and fill out and keep for your own records. Figure 5 18. Place the evidence bags and the completed chain of custody form in the self addressed mailer. (Fig 7). 19. Send mailer using USPS, UPS, or DHL making sure that you require signatures (e.g., certified mail) to maintain chain of custody requirements. 20. Return all remaining kit contents INCLUDING the marking fluid to the kit container. 21. Use the tamper proof evidence tape included in the kit to close and seal the contents of the kit for security purposes. You may write the case number on the tape if applicable. Figure 6 22. After we authenticate your samples you will receive an electronic expert witness report via the email you provided on evidence bag. contact t 631.240.8800 Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. 50 Health Sciences Drive Stony Brook, NY 11790 USA applieddnasciences ® a d n a s . c o m real&safe TM ©2015 Applied DNA Sciences, Inc.
