Titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” he order also suspended the Syrian refugee program indefinitely, and it prioritized entry for refugees who belong to a religion that is a minority in their home country and are victims of religious persecution. Finally, it reduced the total number of refugees to be allowed into the United States in 2017 from 110,000 to 50,000. Mass confusion and Photo by Taylor Thees Isabel Calderon in her Pussyhat nonviolence, stating “We will suspend our first judgement and do our best to lead without ego.” Many participants in the march wore pink cateared hats, referred to as “Pussyhats” as a movement of solidarity. The idea of the pink hat is from two friends who bonded through their love of knitting and wanted to take their passion for knitting to a bigger stage to support the march. The idea was to make a visual statement of a sea of pink in D.C. during the march. The “Pussyhats” are also a reference to President Trump’s comment about women in 2005. The hats joined those marching, but also those who were unable to go to the capitol. The iconic hat allowed those who could not march in Washington to have a sense of presence and involvement. As word of the project spread, more and more people wanted to make the hats. So many people wanted to become a part of this movement, there was actually a shortage of Photo by CNN President Trump Signing his Executive Order panic were the immediate consequences of this executive order. About 500,000 people from the seven nations that the executive order specifically names have been granted green cards in the past decade, meaning that hundreds of thousands people who were legally allowed to be in the United States can now be barred from entering. Therefore, immigration lawyers and employers have warned many to refrain from leaving the U.S. pink yarn in the country. The two founders of the Pussyhat Project hope for the hats to serve as a symbol of feminist activism that extend far longer than January 21st. One founder shares to People Magazine, “My dream is that a grandmother will give her granddaughter her Pussyhat, and say ‘I wore this on January 21, 2017.’” Over 600 cities in the U.S. held marches on January 21st. Many Ottawa Hills students and community members attended marches around the country, including seniors Isabel Calderon and Kiera Wolkins, who both attended the march in Washington.Kiera shared, “It was amazing to come together for a common cause regardless of things like race, religion, or political party.” With such a great outcome from the march, the campaign will not stop. The organization has recently launched “10 Actions for the First 100 Days” calling all of the participants to reach out within their communities and take action every ten days on an issue that they believe needs attention. More information on this new campaign can be found at www.womensmarch.com. Additionally, the vagueness of the executive order seems to have left much power in the hands of local authorities, causing further confusion. On February 3rd, 2017, federal judge James Robart of Seattle issued a temporary national restraining order on President Trump’s executive order restricting travel. On February 7th, 2017, the US ninth circuit court of appeals held oral arguments on whether to keep the restraining order. Two days later, the court decided to uphold it, continuing the block on the travel ban. 2 Opinion Arrowhead Staff Mrs. Karen Schoenberger Advisor Patrick Arnold Editor-in-Chief Front Page Editor Juile Hoeflinger Associate Editor Entertainment Editor Taylor Thees Design Editor Tech Director Cameron Roller Features Editor Digital Committee Chair Tony Zhou Final Analysis Editor Steven Randall Opinion Editor Santiago Garcia-Mata Community Editor Abby Hauck Sports Editor Staff Reporters: Aidan Byrne Jan Durst William Koury Hailey McGee Ethan Riepenhoff Nathan Robinson David Rodriguez Matthew Sherman Adam Simon Ben Werner 2016-2017 Santiago Garcia-Mata Sports Editor The United States of America, one of the wealthiest nations in the world, and one of the most industrialized and developed as well, is falling behind in taking care of its citizens by keeping the minimum wage so low that it has actually been decreasing since 1968, when adjusted for inflation. So far, Trump has not been Ethan Riepenhoff Staff Reporter It seems as if minimum wage workers are protesting in greater frequency than ever demanding higher wages, sometimes as high as $15 an hour. But are their demands justified? One primary assumption to be made is that increased wages for a specific job leads to more people applying for that job. In essence, the belief holds that a wage increase will encourage more people to work minimum wage jobs. It is not a question of whether we want to pay workers higher, but whether we want to pay these specific workers higher. To Arrowhead - February 2017 Hot Takes: Works for Bottom Dollar answer this question, we must analyze the stability of these jobs. Upon doing so it is clear raising the minimum wage would be implementing a policy that promotes mundane, replaceable jobs over higher-level, specialized careers. This is primarily because of the develop- ment of robotic technology. Futurists like Elon Musk predict widespread automation for the future, which will first hit jobs like cashiers or shelf-stockers. Trump has not been able to realize that if he thought about the travel ban before he just wrote the executive order that he may have been able to create a per- First of all, raising the national minimum wage to a modest $10 an hour is completely reasonable and beneficial, as it would increase consumer spending, thus promoting job growth, as well as giving people who do not have high levels of education the chance to raise a family if they so choose. The Economic Policy Institute has stated that raising the minimum wage to $10 would increase spending, injecting billions of dollars into the market, and create about 85,000 jobs, decreasing unemployment. Furthermore, a person who works full time for minimum wage pay makes only about $3,000 a year more than the national poverty line, which puts many workers at an unnecessarily risky financial position in which they have to hold onto every bit of money they get. In addition, because these people are, in large part, not highly educated, they do not have the knowledge or experience to move much farther up in the chain of command, which would allow them to make more money. On the other hand, increasing the minimum wage to $10 would lift about 900,000 Americans out of poverty, allowing them to join the consumer society, and freeing them to manent plan to help secure our borders. Along the lines of securing borders, Trump has started to discuss how he plans to get the wall built. Trump plans for the United States to pay for the wall at first and then will make Mexico reimburse Congress. So, to an extent, President Trump has agreed to what he told the American people about how Mexico will pay for the wall. “When you understand that Mexico’s economy is dependent upon US consumers, Donald Trump has all the cards he needs to play,” said Chris Collins, congressional liaison for the Trump transition team, who is backing Trump because he has a solid plan to make sure that Mexico will pay for the wall. Trump stated that he would repeal Obamacare but nothing has happened to it. Republicans are even getting angry at Trump for not starting the process of repealing Obamacare which he clearly said he would repeal very quickly after pedite the process of automating workers by raising the minimum wage. We need to keep people working, and if that becomes more expensive, automation will become more cost efficient - even quicker. As time progresses, so will technology. President Trump is now a little over three weeks into his Presidency and Obamacare has not even been brought up by Trump or cabinet until he had an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “I would like to say by the end of the year at least the rudiments, but we should have something within the year and the following year,” Trump said when asked when he will start to do something about our national healthcare system. Cameron Roller Staff Reporter In the wake of the inauguration of Donald Trump, sales of the oft-lauded dystopian novel 1984, penned by George Orwell in 1949, rose dramatically. The novel, which was written as a pessimistic vision of the ultimate manifestation of Russian surveillance should the nation’s repressive regime continue, seems to have resonated with Americans under the impression that President Trump might be willing to rob them of their rights and civil liberties. While such a statement might exaggerate reality, the sales spike is indicative of a phenomenon uncommon in modern society: the use of permanent works as a consideration when analyzing the present. The modern individual receives Arrowhead - February 2017 the majority of his or her reactionary content to a news event from quick social media blips. When a controversial story breaks, individuals will then decide their stance on the basis of 140-character messages from individuals that they consider “worthy” of their viewing on Twitter, Snapchat, and other social media. That is what makes the sales spike of 1984 so surprising, and frankly, quite exciting. Instead of taking the instantaneous, reactionary words of a journalist or celebrity as gospel (words that will quite literally fade away after even just twenty-four hours), the masses are looking to a novel, to a lasting work with a permanent legacy, for instruction on how to treat the future. While the value of quick response and argumentation is of undeniable importance, let us not forget the profound nature of those who have left works that touch on many of the same topics that plague society today. In the wake of heightened racial tensions, read a James Baldwin novel, or listen to a Marvin Gaye album. If you’re considering the implications of an immigration ban, read about the history of such bans in the United States and elsewhere. If you’re trying to decide a general stance on war, poverty, or lifestyles, continue doing what you’re doing with social media – but remember, there are lessons from the past in all such subjects, as many are finding with 1984. Whether you’re a die hard fan of an old franchise or only considering buying a video game because you’re bored, here are some of the most anticipated games in 2017. In mid-February, a game I personally am looking extremely forward to is the MMO Arena game For Honor. This game follows a tribe of human beings in a primitive environment, but the animals in the environment are all robots. Fans of Nintendo® will be delighted to get their hands on a new edition to the Legend of Zelda series, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, following Link once again on another grand adventure to save Hyrule. Followers of BioWare® and Electronic Arts® with their masterpiece RPGs should keep an eye out for Mass Effect: Andromeda with an open-world galaxy with thousands of quests to complete and planets to explore. One game in particular that I think gamers everywhere should be excited for is Red Dead Redemption 2. Coming from the same developers who made the wildly popular Grand Theft Auto games, this game is pretty much the exact same thing, but in a wild west environment. This time around, unlike the previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2 will have online multiplayer com- ponents, which I believe will put it in high demand for all gamers. Another game that I am certain will reach the top of the charts is the new God of War. Due to its massive fame in the past, veteran gamers are sure to be looking for this game on the shelves of their nearest GameStop. This time around, our favorite god-killing warrior Kratos is not taking on the gods of ancient Greece, but this time he plans to topple the gods of Norse mythology, which will be an interesting twist on the game, and I am excited to see where this goes in development. Other games that have not been given a confirmed release date include a new Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. Along with these, fans of sports-oriented video games should be ecstatic to learn the FIFA 18 is expected to release around September 2017. Of course these are only a select few of the many anticipated games of 2017, and because of this, veteran gamers and, as we would call them, “noobs” should keep a watchful eye out for these and other titles this year. While the TMA is known for its unique and beautiful exhibitions, this display seems to be even more distinct and politically and socially charged than those previous. Through his artwork, Wiley is able to call question to the absence of various races, Arrowhead - February 2017 especially African American, and genders in museums and alternative exhibitions worldwide. He takes his inspiration from pieces called Old Masters, which were paintings created by well-known artists of skill around the 19th century. These Old Masters almost always portray European aristocrats, which is where Wiley diverges off. He replaces white subjects with his own to juxtapose the traditional style and context with a modern model. Wiley typically portrays young black men or women in strong poses and clothing that would be commonly seen today. At a young age, Wiley was enrolled into art school in his hometown of Los Angeles to keep him off the streets. According to Wiley, this was where his “love affair with classical paintings,” began. However, at a young age he was able to notice a gap in racial representation. He wanted to not only represent those with black and brown skin, but tell the story behind them. By utilizing a method he calls “street casting,” Wiley invites typically black males off the streets of Harlem to paint their portraits while sporting street clothes but posed as typical Renaissance subjects. Not only does he profile potential models in Harlem, but he also travels around the world, primarily focusing on West Africa, to explore other cultures and the faces that represent them. He incorporates prints from the country from which his models come from and displays the different senses of beauty in race, gender, and body types. With so many variations in content come variations in perception. As Wiley stated, there are as many interpretations of his work as there are viewers, which is just one of the many beauties of his collection. Wiley’s exhibit featured at the TMA, A New Republic, creates a space where “new fields of providence are possible,” as reflected by the artist. Wiley’s aims were to make his work irrational, rational, beautiful, terrible, uncomfortable, and most of all, real. In his talk for the Master Series at the TMA, he impressed the full house with his charm, awe-inspiring tales, intellectual and aware outlooks, and envelope-pushing attitude, as he dove into his start, his inspiration, and where he plans to go next. January 20, 2017, marked the day that Donald Trump was sworn into office. This day also marked the beginning of his first 100 day plan. The main focus of his plan are creating jobs, equalizing trade, and bolstering national security. Trump plans to place term limits on members of Congress in order to “break the cycle of corruption,” to “give new voices a chance to go into government service,” and to drain the swamp. He faces some challenges. A Arrowhead - February 2017 of each other. What prompted it to move within half a minute of that near armageddon this year? The report cited that: “world leaders made too little progress in the face of continuing turbulence. In addition to the existential threats posed by nuclear weapons and climate change… trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news… and words were used in cavalier and often reckless ways.” Specific incidents of concern included nuclear tensions between the USA, Russia, the Middle East, and North Korea, advancing climate change, and the election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. To clarify: the Doomsday Clock does not measure in actual units of time. It gives no indication of when global disaster may strike, and it makes no guesses for how or why that disaster may occur. It is simply a thermometer, a gauge of proximity based only on current events and the atmosphere of previous years. Its only claims are that the world is close to the brink, certain factors are responsible, and that actions need to be taken to prevent a catastrophe. For this reason, the clock should be interpreted not as prediction, but caution. My first response to this news? I’m not surprised. We’ve been seeing the warning signs for years. The clock has been set at three minutes to midnight since 2015, and we’ve done nothing to avert its progress. ISIS is losing in Iraq, yet jihadism Supreme Court decision in 1995 passed by a five to four vote stated that Congress or states cannot make a law limiting the number of terms Congress can serve. Furthermore, Constitutional amendments are also really hard to pass, requiring a ⅔ supermajority in Congress and ¾ ratification from states. He proposed they do this in five steps. First, he will “institute a 5-year ban on all executive branch officials lobbying the government after they leave government service.” Members of Congress are able to serve an unlimited number of terms. This ban may discourage many looking to join his administration from doing so. Secondly, he will ask Congress to institute a similar 5-year ban on “lobbying by former members of Congress and their staffs.” Five years still inspires many in the West to carry on its legacy. Global climate change marches on while the leaders of the world bury their heads in the sand. The United States has been divided by the 2016 election and President Trump’s first actions in a way not seen since the Civil War. Trump is a step up from the method currently in place, with former House members waiting one year, and former Senators waiting two years to lobby in Congress. Third, he will expand the definition of what a lobbyist is so it would close current loopholes. According to Trump, one such loophole is former government officials labeling themselves as ‘consultants’ or ‘advisors’. Fourth, he will “issue a lifetime ban against senior executive branch officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.” Finally, Trump will ask Congress to pass a campaign finance reform, which would prevent foreign lobbyists from raising money in American elections. These major changes to Congress are supported by many such as former Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz and Florida’s Representative Ronald DeSantis. Cruz is in support of the term limits in order to put the government back to work for the American people and to “put an end to the cronyism and deceit” that has turned Washington into a “graveyard of good intentions.” DeSantis wants to take the first step to reforming Capitol Hill, and this program is that first step. Even with this support, Trump faces an uphill battle, and only time will tell the outcome of his plan to drain the swamp. 6 Community Arrowhead - February 2017 Bolstering Enrollment Through To Build or Not to Build: That is the Question Tuition-Based Students Aidan Byrne Staff Reporter Ottawa Hills students may be school- paign. On January 31, hundreds of concerned citizens of both Ottawa Hills and Old Orchard, as well as representatives from the OH School Board, OH Village Council, Toledo City Council, and the Old Orchard Neighborhoods Association, gathered in the Old Orchard Elementary School. Those in attendance discussed the project, as well as all of the concerns surrounding the City of Toledo’s proposals. Even though the project is 75 percent in Toledo and 25 percent in Ottawa Hills, there are 13 homes in Ottawa Hills which would need to be demolished to expand Secor. Ottawa Hills Village Council has the final say in whether or not the project can go forward, because they must give Toledo permission to tear down the houses in the Village. According to The Blade, a safety study by DGL Consulting Engineers found there were 199 crashes on the roadway from 2013 through 2015, with 68 percent resulting in property damage and 32 percent resulting in injury. Of the study emerged: 1. The first option is two lanes running each direction with a 10-foot median, turn lanes, and two-lane roundabouts. 2. The second option is similar to the first in that it has two lanes running each direction and two-lane roundabouts, but the median is four feet wide. 3. The third option is what’s known as a “road diet,” which has one lane in each direction with a center turn lane and one-lane roundabouts. 4. The final option that came out of the study is to leave the roadway as it is. At the meeting on January 31, many rejected all of these proposals in favor of a fifth solution. Much like Talmadge, another high traffic street that passes through a residential neighborhood, Secor would be transformed from its current four lanes of nine feet width, to two, wider lanes, with space for parking on both sides and a lower speed limit. This option would not require any houses to be torn down. The biggest concern of the Village is the loss of tax revenue from the houses that would be destroyed. The rough estimate of lost revenue is about $5,000 from the district and about $51,000 from the schools, with an extra $9,000 in income tax loss if the families decide to relocate outside of the Village. The City of Toledo has been offered a little over $8.3 million to help fund the project, which would cover about 80% of the cost. The Ottawa Hills Streets Commission chaired by councilman Rex Decker asked the Village to obtain an independent traffic study, signaling that the Village Council may be ready to reject the proposal given to them by the City of Toledo. Toledo told the Village that they needed to know whether they could continue with the project before the end of March, so going forward, look for significant any Village Council decisions regarding Secor. 7 Sports Another Championship, Another Blown Lead Ben Werner Staff Reporter On February 5th, the New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in the first overtime in Super Bowl History, led by Tom Brady’s record-setting performance in a 25 point comeback. The first half of Super Bowl LI was dominated by the Falcons and MVP quarterback Matt Ryan, as the birds had a controlling 28-3 lead at halftime, taking advantage of crucial turnovers by the Patriot offense. However, one of the worst things someone can do is count out Tom Brady, as he came alive in the second half to finish with a stat sheet of 466 passing yards and two touchdowns, a Super Bowl passing yards record. Running back James White set an NFL Super Bowl receptions record with 14 receptions for 110 yards and one score. For the Patriots, this gives the duo of Coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady five super bowl rings (Belichick’s seventh overall). If you didn’t already believe that Brady is the greatest to ever play, it’s extremely difficult to argue he isn’t after capturing his fifth ring, the most ever by a quarterback in NFL history. For the Falcons, they join a group of teams who have blown a very significant lead on the championship stage in the past year, joining the Golden State Warriors (up 3-1 on the Cavaliers), and the Cleveland Indians (up 3-1 on the Cubs). However the future is bright for loaded offense and a rising defense, who will strive to make it back next year. Brady will turn 40 in August, but somehow continues to get better and better and plans on playing for 5-10 more years, believe it or not. Super Bowl LI had monster viewership, gaining 113.7 average viewers, tied for the second most watched game of all time. The game was the most watched telecast in Fox history, despite coming slightly short of their Super Bowl victory two years ago against the Seattle Seahawks, which had a viewership of 114.5 million viewers. Sports Betting in the US: Why Is It Still Banned? David Rodriguez Staff Reporter In 1992, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was passed. With its passage, gambling on sports became illegal across the United States, with the exceptions of Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana. In recent years, this federal ban on sports betting has been under heavy fire. States like New Jersey have challenged the act’s constitutionality, while figures like Senator John McCain and NBA commissioner Adam Silver have called for Congress to reexamine the ban on sports gambling in the U.S. Similarly to the prohibition of alcohol in the 20th century, there is no evidence at all that suggests that the federal ban has prevented Ameri- Arrowhead - February 2017 cans from getting their fix of action in the sports betting industry. Annually, Las Vegas casinos and sportsbooks receive nearly $4,000,000,000 in wages, taxed at 25%. With so many long term studies concluding that in essentially any type of gambling, but especially in sports betting, the house always wins in the long run, it may seem like free money to be collected on tax for the government. And while $4B is a substantial amount, it is estimated that annually, Americans illegally wager up to $380B on sports through an underground industry of offshore betting houses in addition to illegal local bookmakers, making sports betting America’s second largest black market industry. Fighting as One Hailey McGee Staff Reporter This winter, both Ottawa Hills basketball teams held events to support two different causes. It first started off on Friday, January 27th when the boys’ basketball team faced off against league opponent Gibsonburg. The theme of the night was “Knock Out Brain Cancer.” This was the second year in a row that OH has sponsored a game to raise money for brain cancer victims and their families. A Gibsonburg fan and also brain cancer survivor, Emma Carpenter, spoke to the fans at halftime. To raise money for the game, OH students bought T-shirts to show their support for the fight against brain cancer. Gibsonburg fans also con- tributed to the night by wearing their grey. OH basketball player Peter Roman said, “It gave me motivation to play knowing that a brain cancer survivor and her family were in the crowd.” The response and the attention to this cause from everyone involved made it a huge success. With such great success from the night before, the Lady Green Bears basketball team was ready to host “Hoops For A Cause” in support of cancer research and any families that are affected. Fans were instructed to wear pink to the game to show their acknowledgement and support. With the OH pep band there to play and a full student section, the players were hyped to play. Senior basketball player Morgan Billstein said, “That was one of the most exciting and memorable games because tons of people came out to support the great cause!” Photo by Mr. McMurray Ottawa Hills student section showing support for the fight against brain cancer and for the OH basketball team as they faced off Gibsonburg. With all this dirty money passing through the hands of Americans illegally every single year, the question as to why this ban is in place is finally receiving attention. Many people would assume that it has something to do with morals, since gambling is often seen as a vice. However, the truth is that essentially the only reason that the ban is still intact is out of fear of a professional sports betting scandal. Through American sports history, there have been numerous betting scandals exposed: the 1919 Chicago White Sox throwing the World Series, numerous NCAA basketball point shaving incidents throughout the 1960s, and MLB legend Pete Rose betting on games that he was involved in. Sports fans across the nation grow outraged at incidents like these; however, in each of these cases, there were strong mafia ties that led to the scandals. It is no secret that the Italian Mafia has an extremely strong connection to illegal sports betting in the U.S, and in these incidents, their gambling ties caused them to provoke scandals. When the cause of essentially every major sports scandal in the history of the United States traces back to the influence of illegal betting houses, why would keeping betting illegal, thus upholding the massive influence of illegal gambling, prevent those involved from causing another scandal? 8 Final Analysis Arrowhead - February 2017 Dear Donald: The War on Media Jan Durst Staff Reporter Dear Donald J. Trump, Arrowhead News is truly sorry for not addressing you via Twitter, the most presidential of mediums of the modern era. Furthermore, we sent you a bathrobe. Every president needs one, even if Mr. Spicer claims you have never worn one while in office. Now, we would like to discuss your relationship with us. Even though we find your “war on the Media” offensive, we would like to extend a formal apology. Firstly, we would like to apologize for failing to cover the infamously unfamous Bowling Green Massacre. Our failure to cover this tragic event, along with many others, like the attacks on Paris and Brussels, was appalling, and we hope to be better in the future. Secondly, we would like to apologize for taking pictures of your inauguration crowd. We understand that size was very important to you when we discussed your hands, and it was simply inflammatory of us to record your crowd size. Secondly, we would like to apologize for criticizing your counselor for her “alternative facts” statement. We alternatively admit that we are alternatively wrong to disagree with alternative facts. Lastly, we would like to formally apologize for recording your words. We understand that if we are going to build a healthy, loving relationship in the future, we will have to begin to disregard your “locker room talk” and probably just stop reporting on what you actually say. You only respond positively to news that is good for you and the country, so we may even stop covering what you do in office. Who knows? If we play our cards right, we could be your Breitbart News one day.
