Designed for life on the river
1
So you want to hang out right down on the water’s
edge – where the floating market sits on repurposed pontoons? Doesn’t this area flood?
This scheme responds to the site’s tidal, riparian setting
in five ways: »» Fixed public walkways (just like the Bicentennial
STEP
Queen’s Wharf:
City life returns to the
River’s edge
STEP
Bikeway and new Riverwalk) define primary
promenades and extend existing footpaths.
»» River gardens filter urban stormwater before
reaching the River,
»» Floating, fixed pontoons (just like the new ferry
terminals) let us get down to the waterline,
»» Pontoons moored alongside the fixed walkways
are kitted out as parks and pools that can be safely
manoeuvred to shelter before major floods arrive,
»» The elements that occupy these spaces are
intentionally robust and easy to move (by forklifts
and trolleys) in case storms or flood events
eventuate. Re-purposed shipping containers
suit the feel of this underbelly landscape and
are the staging points for life in this vital, urban
playground.

Brimming with history
Ever wondered what those old buildings were down
there? Learn about how the City sprang from this river
bank in 1829 at the Museum of Brisbane’s new ‘Boathouse’
annexe and the National Trust of Queensland.
Spoilt for choice
Picking up some fresh seafood and
flowers from the floating market after
a game of lunch-time basketball? Well
aren’t you clever? Just remember - the
city bus fleet needs those courts from
3pm or so to feed afternoon peak hour!
Welcome to our urban playground
Caught the late ferry after bumping into
friends at the bream and oyster bar? Who
can blame you? Spontaneously stumbled
into a late-night movie festival being
projected onto some stacked up shipping
containers? Spread the word!
This should happen now . . .
The site’s layered history and
untapped potential demand a design
response that facilitates quick
implementation. This is not the place
for guilt-edged extravagance – but
rather by working with the gritty,
urban qualities of the site we can
deliver a strong, complementary
counterpoint to Southbank and a new,
river-edge playground for the City.
Working with the expressway
Yes there is a freeway overhead and it is important
to ensure its long-term maintenance can occur
unencumbered. This scheme improves the extent of
hard-stand available for maintenance works with all
elements able to be easily relocated. A dynamic lighting
component driven by the site’s ambient energy turns the
column-scape into a city-scale graphic equalizer – or a
temporary extension of shows at GoMA and QPAC.
This youthful, exuberant city — with its enviable climate and lifestyle — has THE RIVER POOL
rediscovered a slice of waterfront history beneath William Street. Queen’s
Wharf will double the length of active waterfront on this City Centre peninsula.

Out of bed early to work through some CBD stress over a few
laps in the world’s first floating 50m lap pool? Completely
understandable... Make sure you take advantage of the ‘end
of trip’ facilities in the kitted out shipping containers and
floating parks sitting out there in the sunshine.

Don’t worry that you’re running
late for that 2pm meeting –
there are three new ways to
get from the River bank up to
William Street. You can also
now do a 2.5km loop in front
of the mangroves – over the
Goodwill Bridge – along South
Bank and over Victoria Bridge
to Queens Wharf.
