The Modern Languages Department is vibrant, progressive and well resourced. There are five well equipped classrooms with interactive whiteboards, two small rooms for the Foreign Language Assistants’ classes and a departmental resource room. Pupils follow the NI Curriculum and CCEA examination specifications at Key Stages 4 & 5. This provides a secure basis for the progressive acquisition of knowledge and skills by the pupils. In Years 8-10, all pupils learn French. In years 9 and 10, pupils study Spanish as a second foreign language. In Years 11 and 12, pupils choose to continue with one or both of their languages. Around 10-15% of pupils choose two languages. French and Spanish are offered at AS and A2 level with a growing number of students opting to study these courses. Within the Modern Languages Department, pupils are actively encouraged to work to the best of their ability. To this end a variety of teaching styles are used to cater for all types of learners. The department team of five teachers and two language assistants endeavour to make language learning as motivational and authentic as possible by organising annual trips abroad and ensuring that all pupils have contact time with the foreign language assistants. All staff at Omagh Academy are expected to have developed the ICT competence to be able to deliver discrete ICT classes to Years 8 and 9, if required, and to be able to assess the use of ICT by pupils in their subject area.
