Madrid made history in his first year at the helm of the San Jac women’s basketball program. The team ended the 201516 season as Region XIV Tournament runner-up, which is the farthest any women’s basketball team has ever advanced in the history of the College. San Jac finished the season with a 22-11 overall record. The highlight of their tournament run was in the semifinal round, when #4 seed San Jac eliminated #1 seed Trinity Valley Community College with an upset 57-52 win. Madrid came to San Jac with 21 years of coaching experience, most recently at Paris Junior College where he served as head coach for two seasons. Madrid has an impressive résumé, with experience at both the high school (10 years) and college levels (11 years). During his time at Paris Junior College, Madrid went 24-37. Before his two years at PJC, he served three years as assistant women’s basketball coach at Texas Woman’s University, where he helped the Pioneers win their first Lone Star Conference tournament championship in any sport, and advance to the National Collegiate Athletic Association South Central Region tournament. Coach Madrid Year-by-Year Paris Junior College SeasonRecord 2014-20158-22 2013-201416-15 5 San Jacinto College SeasonRecord 2014-15 22-11 San Jacinto College Women’s Basketball 2016-2017 Madrid’s coaching career began at New Mexico’s Portales High School, helping the team win the 2001 Class 3A championship. After a year at Lubbock Estacado High School as a boys’ football, track, and basketball coach, he coached boys’ basketball for two years at Lubbock High School. Madrid spent five years at Lubbock Christian University under women’s head coach Steve Gomez, one as a graduate assistant and four as an assistant coach. While he was at Lubbock Christian, the team was the 2005- 2006 NAIA National Runner-Up and won the 2006-2007 Sooner Athletic Conference championship. Like all coaches, Madrid emphasizes winning. But his personal coaching philosophy is to stress winning in all areas of life, not just in sports. “I strive to help students to succeed not just in athletics, but also in academics and in every area,” he said. “To do that, it requires being competitive, but also being consistent. We stress the importance of graduating and becoming wellrounded, responsible, and positive after graduation.” Madrid holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s degree in sports administration from Eastern New Mexico University. He also holds a master’s degree in education administration from Lubbock Christian University. Madrid and his wife, Sammie, are expecting their first child in November. They also have a dog named Renzo.
