Michael Madrid
Head Coach
Second Season
Eastern New Mexico University (1998, 2001),
Lubbock Christian University (2007)
Overall: 46-48
At San JAc: 22-11
Head Coach Michael Madrid is in his second season with the San
Jacinto College women’s basketball program.
Madrid made history in his first year at the helm of the San
Jac women’s basketball program. The team ended the 201516 season as Region XIV Tournament runner-up, which is the
farthest any women’s basketball team has ever advanced in the
history of the College. San Jac finished the season with a 22-11
overall record. The highlight of their tournament run was in
the semifinal round, when #4 seed San Jac eliminated #1 seed
Trinity Valley Community College with an upset 57-52 win.
Madrid came to San Jac with 21 years of coaching experience,
most recently at Paris Junior College where he served as head
coach for two seasons.
Madrid has an impressive résumé, with experience at both the
high school (10 years) and college levels (11 years). During his
time at Paris Junior College, Madrid went 24-37. Before his two
years at PJC, he served three years as assistant women’s basketball
coach at Texas Woman’s University, where he helped the Pioneers
win their first Lone Star Conference tournament championship
in any sport, and advance to the National Collegiate Athletic
Association South Central Region tournament.

Madrid’s coaching career began at New Mexico’s Portales High
School, helping the team win the 2001 Class 3A championship.
After a year at Lubbock Estacado High School as a boys’ football,
track, and basketball coach, he coached boys’ basketball for
two years at Lubbock High School. Madrid spent five years at
Lubbock Christian University under women’s head coach Steve
Gomez, one as a graduate assistant and four as an assistant
coach. While he was at Lubbock Christian, the team was the
2005- 2006 NAIA National Runner-Up and won the 2006-2007
Sooner Athletic Conference championship.
Like all coaches, Madrid emphasizes winning. But his personal
coaching philosophy is to stress winning in all areas of life, not
just in sports. “I strive to help students to succeed not just in
athletics, but also in academics and in every area,” he said. “To
do that, it requires being competitive, but also being consistent.
We stress the importance of graduating and becoming wellrounded, responsible, and positive after graduation.”
Madrid holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and a
master’s degree in sports administration from Eastern New
Mexico University. He also holds a master’s degree in education
administration from Lubbock Christian University. Madrid and
his wife, Sammie, are expecting their first child in November.
They also have a dog named Renzo.

Surrounded by the monuments of history, the industries
and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age
of tomorrow, San Jacinto College has been serving the
citizens of East Harris County, Texas, since 1961. As one
college with multiple locations, San Jacinto College has a
location nearby the majority of our students. Our college
brings people together for all kinds of academic pursuits,
workforce training, continuing education, and frequent
gatherings of civic, community and non-profit groups.
San Jacinto College is committed to serving the citizens,
businesses and industries of East Harris County. At the core
of our values is student success. In fact, we are a recognized
leader in the national student completion movement.
San Jacinto College was named an Achieving the Dream
Leader College in 2011 and received this recognition again
in 2014. We achieved this status through a direct focus
on removing barriers for completion, enhancing support
systems and emphasizing academic excellence.
The College is also committed to developing a skilled and
trained workforce to meet the growing demands of industry in
our region. We partner with industry to ensure we are teaching
the skills that make our students employable immediately upon
completion of their program. We have created fast-track and
stackable credentials to help meet that workforce need and to
ensure students have a pathway as they progress in their careers.
At San Jacinto College, we know that not everyone is a
“traditional” student. Goals and scheduling demands are
unique, so we offer courses during the day, during the
evening, on weekends, and online. San Jacinto College
students choose from 186 degrees and certificates in 46
technical programs and university transfer pathways. Our
corporate partners benefit from a robust training program
through the Continuing and Professional Development
division, which also offers leisure learning classes and
programs for K-12 teachers through the Aerospace Academy.
San Jacinto College continues to lead in the Gulf Coast
through grant-funded partnerships and collaboration with
other colleges and organizations. These funds support
student success through academic programs and initiatives
promoting college retention and completion, regional
workforce training, scholarships and tuition in various
student programs, and create pathways to higher education
and the workforce for middle and high school students.
Whatever path you take, you’ll find a friendly, bighearted community at San Jacinto College.
