April 2015

Dear Parents,
It seems like a very short term, but your children have packed in a great
deal of learning! We have been having tremendous fun this week with
all children working on lots of exciting Science projects. We had a great
visit from Mr G – a most entertaining scientist – and all of the children
really enjoyed the experience! Prior to our Science week, we had
looked forward to the solar eclipse, and although the clouds failed to
part for us to see very much on Friday, everyone was engaged in lots of
eclipse activities.
All children have undertaken assessments this term and we are pleased with how much
effort we have seen. It was good to see so many of you at parents evening – anyone who
could not attend, please contact your child’s teacher and they will be happy to make an
appointment to meet with you. Year 6 have been busy preparing for their end of year
assessments in May – I am proud of all of them – they are all really working hard to make
sure they enter secondary school with incredibly strong skills across the curriculum.
Thank you to everyone who filled in our questionnaire – we have analysed the responses
and a summary is enclosed. It is lovely to read so many positive comments – we strive to
make Huish as perfect as it can be, and your comments will help make our school even
better. I hope you have a restful Easter break. See you in April
Science Week
Hair standing on end, muddy water, ice balloons,
flubber! What is that all about? Science Week that is
what! Again, the children at Huish have enjoyed a
medley of practical science activities this week which
have got them questioning, predicting, testing,
measuring, observing, recording, concluding, as well
as learning that Science is FUN!
Reception children have been learning lots about the
farm, which included a visit to Mr Snell’s farm. Year 1
and 2 children have been exploring acids and alkalis, and as result created some pretty
scary monsters. They have been learning about magnetism and static electricity, as
well as creating structures, using spaghetti and mushrooms. Year 3 and 4 children have
made some cool stretchy plastic, explored their senses, tested the affects of air
resistance, as well as floated boat shapes and tested cargo loads.
Year 5 children have focused on materials through out the
week. They have grouped and classified, tested properties,
carried out insulation investigations, separated materials and
explored ice. Year 6 children have been carrying out various
investigations; from balloon propelled cars, illusions and the
affects of noise levels on concentration.
Mr G blew us away with his fun packed assemblies. He sent the
cups on our heads flying and nearly blew up Mrs Barnes, using
some very clever Science! Every child (Y1-Y6) also took part in
an exciting workshop with Mr G. Ask a Year 5 child, what is
actually in a nappy? And are Pampers better than Asda?

Year 2 Circus Skills
The children were a bit star struck at a
recent visit from the author of the books
Year 6 have been looking at in class;
Lauren St John came to talk to us about
her books and how her career has
developed.
As a special treat at the end, after
answering lots of questions from everyone
else, Lauren agreed to look at some Laura
Marlin work we have been doing during
the week and sign them. Lauren was so impressed with them all, she took a
couple of copies home with her to remember them by.
Sally, the Circus Lady came, to visit us and
demonstrate a range of Circus Skills from
different parts of the world. We took part
in balloon balancing, peacock feather
balancing, juggling, limbo and ribbon
twirling. The children had a fantastic time.
Year R—Sock Farm Visit
Classes 1 and 2 had a lovely time at Mr Snell’s (one of our school
governors) farm this week. We were both lucky with the weather!! We
enjoyed walking around the milking parlour, learning how cows are
milked, getting up very close to the cows, seeing some very cute piglets
and finding wheat seeds in the ground. Thank you Mr Snell for a
wonderful 2 days.

eSafety—Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is bullying using technology. This means things like prank calling,
sending or posting nasty messages, emails, photos or videos online about someone
or it might be making people do things on webcams that upset them. In gaming, it
could be ganging up on another player or shutting them out of a game. To help
make sure your child doesn’t become a victim of a cyberbully, please remind them
of the SMART rules, especially S - keep your personal information to yourself, and T tell a trusted adult if you feel uncomfortable or unhappy about something you have
read or seen (see
www.kidsmart.org.uk/
beingsmart). For more information about
cyberbullying and other esafety issues,
including how to report a problem, visit the
esafety pages of the school website

Grant Funding
We
have
just
received
confirmation from the DfE that we
were successful in our grant
application to re-model our KS2
toilets. This project will increase
the capacity of our toilets and
provide extra staff toilets including
disabled access.
We will be
hoping to start the building work
as soon as practically possible.
Basketball
Year 3—Chocolate Factory
On the 24th February,
a team of six Year 6
children took part in a
schools
Basketball
Competition at Yeovil
College. They played
well and, considering
this was their first
ever
competition,
came away with a
very respectable placing, 5th out of 8 teams.
Year 3 visited Mr Sweet at Cheddar Chocolate Factory. We learned about how
they made their chocolates and watched the teachers make some. We did lots
of tasting throughout the morning then walked up the Cheddar Gorge Nature
Trail during the afternoon.
Rugby & Football Taster Day
Netball
Huish recently played in the Netball Cup
Tournament.
They played 3 initial
matches, winning 2 and losing 1. The
team progressed to the semi finals and,
after winning against East Coker, were
knocked out in the second semi-final
against the Castle School. They came
6th out of 14 schools.
Mark Tyrell and his team from Crusader coaching spent the
entire day with us offering children a taster of both Rugby
and Football. The children from Reception to Year 6
enjoyed the day so much many have signed up for the
Rugby club which will run after school on a Friday after half
term. If you are interested in joining this club, then places
are still available.
Handball
Premier Coaching are looking forward to starting the new club
of ‘Handball’ next term. Many Year 4/5/6 children have
signed up to try this sport on a Friday afterschool. There are
still a few spaces available—please ask the office for details.

Having now attended
two trials, we are pleased
to announce that 3 of the
children from Huish’s
Year 5/6 girls’ football
team have been selected
to represent the Yeovil
district football side,
where the standard of
football was incredibly
high!! Well done girls!
Hockey
On the 6th March, 6 Year 2 children
entered a Key Steps One competition at
Orchard Gymnastics. It was an extremely
well attended competition with all
children performing floor routines and
vaults. The Huish team spent many
lunchtimes practising and improving their
performances, with the help of some
willing Year 6 young leaders. Although the
team did not rank in medal positions, they
came away very proud after achieving high
marks in their individual performances.
Short Mat Bowls
Huish Hockey Club has
been running on
Mondays since the
Autumn Term.
The
children have turned
up in all weathers to
learn and practise
their skills. This week
saw them play their
first match against
Preston
Primary
School.
The team did exceptionally well with some impressive
individual performances. The final result was 8-8. Although the Club
has now finished for the Summer, we are looking forward to a rematch
at some point during the next term.
Cross Country
The children of the Cross Country
Club have again had a fantastic
season with the icing on the cake
being their win at the Somerset
County Primary Championships
on Saturday 7th March.
Children from Years 4 and 5
attended this race at Kings
College in Taunton with the first
four runners of Bradley, James,
Connor and Edward securing first
place in the team event.
Also
running for Huish were Billy B,
Oliver, Madison, Hollie and Katie.
In the last race of the Yeovil &
District League, Huish Year 5/6
boys’ team took the bronze
medal with Bradley, Connor, Billy B and Luca the first four finishers

FA Girls’ Football Festival. They were invited
to test their skills in a range of activities
combining football, fun and music.

and Continental Tyres, providing an
exciting, interactive football experience for
both those new to the game and regular
players.
