AUTHENTIC WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES
See kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, koalas and
emus in their natural environment of Australian
coastal bush land, eucalypt forests and fern gullies.
Just three hours south east of Melbourne, Wilsons Promontory National
Park is a haven for Australian wildlife. Watch kangaroos bounding through
the bush or spot wombats ambling through the park looking for a feed
around dusk and dawn.
The Gippsland Lakes abound in native bird and wildlife. Take a cruise and
glimpse birdlife and kangaroos grazing by the water. In Metung, catch the
feeding of the Australian pelicans daily at midday. Raymond Island, just off
Paynesville’s shoreline, is home to a large koala colony and is one of the
best places in Victoria to go koala spotting.
The alpine heathlands and Mountain Ash forests of the Baw Baw
National Park are ideal for spotting wombats, wallabies and sugar gliders.
The park is also home to the endangered leadbeater’s possum.
Further east, native wildlife thrives in the pristine remoteness of
Mallacoota and the Croajingolong National Park. View the large mob
of local kangaroos at Gipsy Point, where the peninsula juts into the
Mallacoota Inlet. There are over 280 species of birds in the area. Look for
the white-bellied sea eagles by the coast, or lyrebirds and azure kingfishers
as you stroll around Lyrebird Walk.

LAKES AND BEACHES
Comprised of over 400 square kilometres, the tranquil Gippsland Lakes is
Australia’s largest network of inland waterways.
The lakeside villages of Lakes Entrance, Metung and
Paynesville surround the water’s edge. Hire a boat
and set sail across the glistening waters, spot dolphins
at play, or cast a line from one of 40 jetties.
The picture-book village of Metung is a charming
nautical oasis where visitors come face-to-face with
the awe inspiring beauty of the region.
Located on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach where the
Gippsland Lakes meets the Southern Ocean, Lakes
Entrance offers much to see and do.
Explore the lakes from a boat cruise, or hire kayaks,
paddleboards or even a houseboat.
With over 600 kilometres of coastline, Gippsland is
spoilt with its choice of beaches. Discover Gippsland’s
Ninety Mile Beach, one of the longest and most
beautiful stretches of sand in the world.
Wilsons Promontory also boasts superb beaches
with mountains overlooking the turquoise waters.
Find a spot all to yourself on Croajingolong National
Park’s pristine and remote sandy beaches.
INSPIRING WALKS AND RIDES

bike rides on gently undulating rail trails, there are
more than 70 inspiring Gippsland walks and rides.

on the Great Walhalla Alpine Trail. Explore the shimmering Gippsland
Lakes on the Entrance to Lakes Walk ending with magnificent views of

30,000 years of Indigenous Gunaikurnai history and culture.
Cycle your way across Gippsland on the rail trails or challenge yourself
on a mountain biking adventure atop Mt Baw Baw during the summer
season. The Bass Coast Rail Trail is the only coastal rail trail in Victoria,
taking in sweeping views across the majestic Bass Coast. Further east, the
East Gippsland Rail Trail is Gippsland’s longest rail trail, weaving through
farmland, tall forests, winding creeks and historic railway bridges.

The magnificent stretch of coastline between
Sydney and Melbourne is one of Australia’s
most dramatic and naturally beautiful self-drive
experiences. Along its length, the great waters
of the Pacific Ocean, Tasman Sea and Bass Strait
have carved out dramatic headlands and created
beautiful coves and beaches. The ancient ranges
that follow it inland are covered in vast expanses
of national parks and forests protecting pristine
lakes and rivers.

A high point of the journey is Wilsons Promontory, the
southernmost point of mainland Australia, where you
can explore small, hidden bays, see wildlife in its natural
habitat, and visit the historic lighthouse.
Day 2: Narooma/Bermagui to Gippsland Lakes
As you arrive into Gippsland Mallacoota is one
of Gippsland’s great escapes. Surrounded by the
magnificent wilderness of the Croajingalong National
Park and set on the beautiful Mallacoota Inlet, its
natural beauty lies in the pure white sandy beaches and
granite peaks. From here the journey takes you to the
Gippsland Lakes, a great place to base yourself for the
evening.
i ng
As you move along the Sydney Melbourne Coastal
Drive, the landscape constantly changes its character
and moods – from the placid blues and pastoral
greens of the NSW coast, to white sands at Jervis Bay,
unspoiled wilderness of the Croajingolong National
Park and the Gippsland Lakes, Australia’s largest inland
waterway.
