Introduction and Project Framework The project Passport to Aging: Celebrating Global Perspectives focuses on the issue of aging by exploring various aspects of aging including worldwide perspectives. According to National Institute on Aging’s Global Health and Aging report (2010) an estimated 524 million people were aged 65 or older representing 8 percent of the world’s population. By 2050, this age group is estimated to escalate to 16 percent of the world’s population. The projections are astonishing worldwide, for the first time the sixty- five plus population will outnumber the under 5 age group. Gerontologists, anthropologists, sociologists have offered paradigms to determine successful aging, productive aging and active aging. All concluding that individuals want and need to add life to their years instead of years to their life! This statement becomes very salient when examining how the life span has increased over the last 100 years. As community focal points, libraries can contribute to enriching the lives of mature adults by offering physical space, materials, programs and services. This compendium of resources amplifies intentional aging focusing on engagement, empowerment, reflection, spirituality, volunteerism, creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning and more. As the world ages, we need to explore and create opportunities to acknowledge and appreciate the aged. Hopefully, this compendium will encourage libraries, librarians and communities to view the aging process as a time to be empowered, engaged, informed and celebrated. As a librarian with a background in gerontology, it is a passion to make this source available to other librarians and interested individuals. Raising awareness about aging from a global perspective will assist with framing approaches to prepare and transform diverse communities with the increase in older populations. We all share the experience of aging. As community focal points, all libraries should strive to be a strategic partner with building age-friendly communities. The call for action is to encourage librarians to become more involved with building awareness about aging as well as developing opportunities for communities to embrace and celebrate older adults. Libraries have the capacity to design promising practices to influence the aging experience. There are so many opportunities to connect with national, regional and local units on aging to build significant, strategic and sustainable collaborations and partnerships.
