ABOUT US
For over twenty-five years, Rainbow Child Care Center has been a leading provider in educational programs, and
we believe that our team of dedicated and nurturing teachers, state-of-the-art schools and educational curriculum
has helped us achieve that status. We understand that choosing a quality preschool program is an important and
sometimes challenging decision, and we are proud and excited that you have chosen Rainbow!
Philosophy
Striving for Best Early Childhood Practices
Rainbow Child Care Center’s program has been
developed to serve the needs of today’s family. We
answer the dilemma that many parents face: where
to find quality child care with a strong academic
foundation. As early childhood professionals, our goal
is to provide continuity between home and school.
We believe it is important for children to maintain
a familiar and comfortable routine and, for this
reason, we strive to create a “home away from home”
experience for every family. We believe a nurturing
atmosphere, a structured curriculum, and parents and
teachers who work as partners will prepare children
for their future academic careers and inspire a love of
lifelong learning. At Rainbow, children are respected,
staff is responsible, and parents are always welcome.
Rainbow Child Care Center is committed to using
best practices in education. In order to ensure we
are implementing best practices validated by current
research, we have an Education Department located
at the Rainbow Child Care Center home office in
Troy, MI. The department consists of an Education
Director, Education Manager, and Education Training
and Development Coordinators. The Education
Department is responsible for routinely updating
educational methods supported by the current
research and creating tools for Rainbow Child Care
Center staff to ensure quality programming. At the
school level, the Program Director and Education
Specialist (a lead teacher who supports school staff
on implementation of the curriculum) meet on a
regular basis to discuss curriculum implementation
and create support systems to meet individual school
needs. The Program Director and Education Specialists
meet with the Department of Education through use
of in-person visits, web/phone conferences, and email
to assess needs, provide new materials, and ensure
high-quality program implementation.
Educational Programs–
The Creative Curriculum®
Rainbow Child Care Center uses The Creative
Curriculum® as a foundation for the structure of the
classroom environment, teacher interactions, and
child development. The philosophy behind The
Creative Curriculum® is that children learn best by
doing. Rather than traditional worksheets, we use real
materials to teach your children the skills they need for
academic success. This means we use blocks to learn
about shapes and sizes, paint to teach colors, and
music and movement to teach letters and sounds. The
Creative Curriculum® also understands children thrive
the most when their education is individualized. Our
classroom environment is set up with interest areas:
blocks, dramatic play, art, library, science discovery,
sensory, music and movement, cooking and outdoors
to ensure your child is engaged in active learning and,
most importantly, having fun!
2
word cards, vocabulary cards and classroom
management provide teachers with the resources
to create innovative and developmentally
appropriate activities (backed by extensive
research) to advance your child’s learning by
supporting all of the senses.
• Uphold cultural diversity: It’s important for
us to know your family’s special traditions and
your child interests so that we can support an
environment that promotes diversity in the
classroom and incorporates a wide range of
activities representing all cultures. Teachers
will attend a comprehensive, two-part cultural
competency training on Employee Education
Day that provides them with the tools to make
families and cultures accessible in the classroom
and recognize that each child comes from a
diverse and unique background.
Caring and Committed Staff
We believe that the success of our schools depends
largely on our early childhood teachers. Our first
requirement for all staff members is that they must
love what they do. We seek unique individuals who
are team players and are dedicated to creating and
maintaining a positive learning environment, coupled
with laughter and smiling faces.
*Please check with your Program Director when
Employee Education Day will occur so you can make
child care arrangements.*
Each school is supported by a Program Director, who
is required to have previous childcare management
experience, an appropriate degree, and emphasizes
the best customer service practices. All of our Lead
Teachers meet or exceed their state’s requirements to
work in early childhood education, along with having
multiple years of experience in a preschool setting. All
Assistant Teachers have related experience and are
typically working towards their degrees.
Regulatory Agencies
Rainbow Child Care Centers are licensed by the states
in which they operate. A copy of each current license
is posted in a prominent location at each school. To
be licensed, each school must comply with the official
licensing regulations. On the premises, there will also
be a copy of the statutes and rules governing day care
for interested parents to review. The center licensing
records, including Compliance Reports, Fire Inspections,
Life/Safety eports, Program Inspection/Violation
Reports, and Complaint Investigation Summary
Reports are available at the school and/or at each state’s
government website. If the state child care licensing
regulations differ from the policies and procedures
outlined in this handbook, the more stringent of the
two always applies. Should you have any concerns or
questions, you may call the toll free number listed on
the license or speak to your Program Director.
Each of our early childhood teachers goes through a
complete, detailed training program during their first
two weeks of employment. These weeks include indepth training on state-specific rating requirements,
child abuse and neglect, fire safety, childcare and
sanitation regulations, as well as company policies
and procedures.
Employee Education Day
As a company, we strongly believe it is important
that our employees receive the support and training
they need to be successful in their classrooms. One
day a year, our schools are closed to provide this
opportunity for our employees. The goals of our
Employee Education Day are to:
Americans with Disabilities Act
At Rainbow, our policy is to accept children in
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA), its regulations and any other applicable local,
state or federal laws referring to the delivery of services
to individuals with disabilities. We evaluate each case
individually, as each child’s needs are different, and we
make reasonable adjustments for any child who can
safely participate in a group care environment.
• Promote quality care in our schools: These
trainings ensure that Rainbow teachers are using
the best techniques to take care of your child.
• Support best practices in the classroom:
At Rainbow, we want to make sure your child is
receiving the support he or she needs to acquire
new developmental skills. Our trainings on sight

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS–
CREATIVE CURRICULUM®
Rainbow Child Care Center provides young children with an educational curriculum that focuses on the use of
meaningful, hands-on, concrete activities. Teachers are facilitators, allowing children to make choices and to learn
from their interactions with their environment. The classroom environment, therefore, is designed to encourage
children to play freely, explore, experiment, and create. By using developmentally appropriate toys and games,
while emphasizing an integrated curriculum, children are able to expand their development successfully.
Infant Program
Sweet laughter and soft lullabies are where imagination
and learning begins. Teachers in our infant classrooms
are committed to creating a safe and nurturing
environment, where babies can explore and make new
discoveries. The Creative Curriculum® builds a strong
foundation, creating a passion for lifelong learning.
Our personalized care will boost learning through
developmentally appropriate practices, which will
help your baby meet developmental milestones.
Our Daily Communication Sheets track your infant’s
progress and provide you with individualized notes.
Young Preschool Program
Come learn with us in our Young Preschool classroom,
where imagination and exploration lend themselves to
a world of learning. Through The Creative Curriculum®,
our teachers purposefully construct learning activities
to promote early academics and independence. Our
teachers track your child’s progress through our child
assessment portfolio system. This information is used
to share your child’s growth during biannual parent/
teacher conferences, held in November and May.
Toddler Program
Curiosity and imagination are where learning begins
in our Toddler classroom, turning play into meaningful
learning experiences. Teachers in these classrooms
are committed to creating a safe and nurturing
environment while implementing a well-balanced
educational program. The Creative Curriculum® boosts
toddlers’ confidence to explore their environment
through hands-on learning exploration while building
independence and an eagerness to discover. Our
teachers track your toddler’s progress through
our Daily Communication Sheets, which provide
individualized notes about what your child learned
each day at school.
Preschool
Preschool is an exciting new adventure in your child’s
life and our teachers are prepared to foster your child’s
early academic experiences. The Creative Curriculum®
supports children in our classrooms by building
their confidence through hands-on exploration
while developing independence. Our teachers are
committed to creating a safe and secure learning
environment where children feel comfortable to
explore and take risks. Our daily schedule provides
flexibility and consistency, as well as a good mix of
physical play, social/emotional development and
early academic lessons. Our teachers track your child’s
progress through our child assessment portfolio
system and daily communication tools. Teachers use
this information to share your child’s growth during
parent/teacher conferences.
4
Pre-K Academy
Varsity Club (Before & After School Programs)
In our Pre-K Academy
Program, your child will
embark on a journey of
learning and exploration.
The Creative Curriculum® is purposefully constructed
to provide your child with a variety of academic
experiences promoting problem-solving abilities,
persistence and a passion for lifelong learning.
Learning and fun continues in Varsity Club, our
before and after school program. Our well balanced
curriculum, Adventure Bound, encourages
imagination, builds pride, and offers new challenges.
It provides opportunities for academic success while
children gain knowledge in core subject areas. By
promoting a positive classroom culture, our curriculum
allows children to experience new adventures, which
inspires a lifelong love of learning and exploration.
Our teachers modify educational experiences based
on children’s interests and strengths while recognizing
each child as an individual. Your child’s teacher will
track his or her progress through our child assessment
portfolio system and daily communication tools.
Teachers use this information to share your child’s
growth during biannual parent/teacher conferences,
held in November and May.
Rainbow Child Care Center recognizes that parents
are a child’s most important teachers. Parental
involvement is a crucial component to the success of a
child’s educational achievement. Research has proven
that children are most successful learners when their
parents are actively involved in their learning, both at
home and at school. Through Pre-K Academy’s Home
Connection Parent Guide, parents are given the tools
they need to create meaningful learning experiences
at home and track their child’s progress.
Summer Camp
Imagination and adventure await your child in our
Summer Camp Program. We offer both indoor and
outdoor activities to provide children with vast
opportunities for learning and exploration. Our Summer
Camp Program provides unique learning experiences,
including special visitors, field trips and exciting projects,
all while fostering growing friendships. Each twoweek camp session includes many hands-on themed
activities to keep your child engaged and enthusiastic
about camp all summer long.
Private Kindergarten
Our Private Kindergarten Program is designed to offer
an alternative educational choice for parents. We take
pride in our ability to provide lower student-to-teacher
ratios than in the public school systems and provide
personalized attention to both children and parents.
Our Private Kindergarten Program offers a
comprehensive educational curriculum that meets the
Common Core and Early Learning Content Standards.
Our curriculum builds an excellent foundation for
early academic success and has clearly defined goals
that guide learning and instruction. Our schools
offer innovative child portfolios that house authentic
assessment and developmental screening tools to
showcase each child’s progress in our programs.
Additionally, we offer individualized instruction and
the opportunity for children to grow cognitively and
develop crucial social skills in a home-like, nurturing
environment. Our kindergarten teachers are dedicated
to preparing children for their future academic careers
in elementary school.
5
Transitions
Children are developmentally assessed throughout
their enrollment. Children’s placements will be
guided by their developmental levels, ages, and
state licensing requirements. The Program Director
will make every effort to move every child to the
next classroom during the first week of the month
immediately following the child’s birthday. Room
transitions are based on the child’s developmental
stage and availability in the school.
To ensure a successful transition, we will create a plan
to help your child become familiar with his/her new
classroom over a one or two week period. Your child will
visit the new classroom prior to the transition to allow
time to get acquainted with the new teacher, physical
environment, friends, daily schedule and routine.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
and Assessments
*Please note: Families with children who have turned
three years old, but who are not yet fully potty trained may
not be able to move to the Preschool classroom. Some
schools may have a transitional room that allows 3 year
olds who are not potty trained to move into the preschool
environment. In general, the Preschool classrooms do
not have diapering areas; therefore, children who are not
potty trained may not be in the Preschool classrooms
due to health and safety regulations. These children will
remain in the Young Preschool classroom, benefiting
from the lower teacher to child ratio until they are fully
potty trained. Tuition will not be adjusted until the child is
moved to a different classroom.
Parent/Teacher conferences are held twice a year for
all classes from Infant through Private Kindergarten.
Conferences are held during November and May, with
specific dates being set by each Program Director.
Parents are encouraged to sign-up for a conference
with their child’s teacher. During the conference,
teachers are available to answer any questions or
concerns that parents may have, as well as discuss
each child’s development. The Assessment of
Developmental Progress is used for all age groups.
Parents may also request a conference with their
child’s teacher as they feel it necessary. Scheduling
of the conference must be arranged by the Program
Director, thus ensuring that the classroom teacher is
available. Parents are discouraged from meeting with
teachers while teachers are supervising children.
We use Teaching Strategies® GOLD Assessment along
with child portfolios to document your child’s progress
throughout their time at Rainbow. We have made
the child portfolios available to you at any time to
promote parents as partners. Pre-K Academy has two
additional resources to support parents as partners in
their child’s education. Parents will receive access to
the Pre-K Portal, a password protected website that
provides access to daily activities, articles, vocabulary
and sight word cards, and tools for performing athome assessments. Pre-K Academy also uses a
norm-referenced screening tool to assess your child’s
readiness for educational experiences at Rainbow
and place them on a path to kindergarten readiness.
The norm-referenced screening tool shows us what
children know as individuals as well as a group, and
helps us develop unique lessons plans to create
growth where it is needed the most.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
Rainbow Child Care Center offers four opportunities for educational enrichments–BabySignLanguage.com, ZooPhonics®, Ready, Set, GROW!® Fit Foundations, and Language Immersion Spanish. Each program is designed for
specific age groups, to ensure that your child is engaging in developmentally appropriate activities.
BabySignLanguage.com
Ready, Set, GROW! Fit Foundations®
Research on baby sign language has found that
teaching baby signs improved cognitive and emotional
development. Far from slowing down speech, baby
sign language actually increases the rate of verbal
development and at the same time increases the
parent/child bond. BabySignLanguage.com is a project
for parents and adults teaching infants and toddlers
early communications skills. BabySignLanguage.com
believes that early communication sets the foundation
for accelerated learning, reduced frustration, and
a closer relationship between adult and child. The
website and its printed resources contain baby sign
language pieces designed around the pedagogical
needs of infants and toddlers.
The Ready, Set, GROW! Fit Foundations® curriculum
blends educational concepts promoting health
and
fitness.
Hands-on
experiences inspire healthy
beginnings by providing
activities
and
games
designed to support muscle
development, coordination
and manipulative skills to
help children master basic
physical skills. With the ability to utilize our state-of-theart gymnasiums and playgrounds, our programming
is consistent and year-round.
Zoo-Phonics®
Language Immersion Spanish
The principle of Zoo-Phonics® maximizes understanding,
memory, utilization and transference to all areas of
the reading, spelling and writing process in a playful
and concrete manner. The Zoo-Phonics® Multisensory
Language Arts Program is a kinesthetic, multi-modal
approach to learning all aspects of language arts. ZooPhonics® is a curriculum-based reading and spelling
program which teaches children the fundamentals of
the English language.
Our Language Immersion Spanish curriculum balances
fun and learning while offering children opportunities
to expand their language development. Through
thoughtfully designed activities and a strong literature
component, your child will learn a second language
as his or her teacher uses a combination of different
strategies to make learning memorable and enjoyable.
7
GENERAL HEALTH AND CARE
Peanut Free School
In order to keep our children
happy, safe, and healthy, we are a
peanut free school. Some children
have very severe allergies, which
could pose harm to them when
they use their sense of touch and taste to explore their
environment. Severe allergies can lead to potentially
life-threatening reactions.
Exposure to peanuts can occur in different ways:
Direct contact: The most common cause of peanut
allergy is eating peanuts or peanut-containing foods.
Sometimes direct skin contact with peanuts can
trigger an allergic reaction.
Nutritional Guidelines
Rainbow Child Care Center’s Ready, Set, GROW!® Fit
Foundations curriculum blends educational concepts
promoting health and fitness. In addition to having a
physically active program for your child to participate
in daily, we strive to make nutrition a priority as well. We
have carefully designed our menus to meet the proper
nutritional needs of the children in our care, but respect
that sometimes parents need to provide food for their
children because of allergies or dietary restrictions.
There are guidelines in place to ensure that all children’s
nutritional needs are being met. Whether served from
Rainbow or brought from home, meals at Rainbow
Child Care Center are a great time for children to learn
about and practice healthy eating habits, practice
positive table behavior, and establish independence.
Cross-contact: This is the unintended introduction
of peanuts into a product. It’s generally the result of
a food being exposed to peanuts during processing
or handling. (For example, hand- shakes, touching a
surface that was exposed, etc.)
Inhalation: An allergic reaction may occur if you
inhale dust or aerosols containing peanuts, such as
that of peanut flour or peanut oil cooking spray.
We want to give all children the safety and freedom to
engage all of their senses and explore. Please help us
maintain a safe, healthy environment for all our children.
Rainbow practices family style-dining for all snacks and
meals, which promotes a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
All food is served in an attractive manner, but never forced
upon a child. We provide children with a wholesome
mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack and juice/milk.
If choosing not to use our lunch program, or if lunch is
not offered at your school, you must provide a lunch for
your child. Staff should be informed of any lunches which
need refrigeration or any special preparation. Unless
our company policy is more stringent, we adhere to all
individual state and food program requirements.
Infant Feeding Schedule
Upon enrollment, your family will fill out an Infant
Feeding Schedule to provide specific details of your
child’s feedings, including when, what, and how
much he or she should be fed. This will help provide
continuity of care for your infant. As your child grows,
you will need to fill out new feeding schedules to
accommodate his or her development.
8
Special Events
Family Calendar of Events
Upon enrollment, you will receive a Family Calendar
of Events which will highlight special events and
activities that will be hosted throughout the year. A
copy of this calendar can be found on your school’s
Family Connection Board.
Birthdays
Birthdays are an important part of a young child’s life.
Celebrating a birthday makes a child feel important,
special, and loved. Classrooms are encouraged to
celebrate birthdays. Monthly, the birthdays of the children
and staff members are posted on the Birthday Board.
Parents are encouraged to participate and may provide
a special treat for their child’s class. Parents are reminded
that at Rainbow, good health and nutrition is always
reinforced. Therefore, sweets and “junk food” should be
limited, while other nutritious treats should be used. As
per state regulations, food and drinks not provided by the
school must be provided from an approved source and
store bought with an ingredients list intact. Homemade
food and drinks are not permitted. To comply with
safety regulations, birthday candles should not be lit in
the building or under the canopies on the playground;
balloons are not allowed in the school as well.
Pre-K Academy/Private Kindergarten Graduation
Graduation is scheduled in May/June for Pre-K
Academy students and Private Kindergarteners who
will be attending kindergarten or first grade in July/
August/September. The children prepare a special
presentation for their parents, as well as receive
diplomas for their achievements.
Children’s Personal Belongings
Every child enrolled is assigned a “cubby” for his/her
personal belongings. All personal belongings shall be
labeled with the child’s first and last name. For Infants,
Toddlers, and Young Preschool children, diapers,
training pants and wipes are provided by the school.
A sample diaper pack will be given at the time of
enrollment for home use. Our high quality products
are provided through one of our early childhood
vendors. Families are responsible to bring in supplies
if their child requires specific diapering products; no
tuition adjustments will be made for children who do
not utilize our diaper program.
Note: All locations are peanut free environments.
Due to the risk of peanut allergies in young children,
no peanut products are to be brought into Rainbow
locations. Please refer to the “Peanut Free School”
section of this handbook for more information.
Toys from Home
Except for days specially chosen by the teacher, we
find it best if your child’s personal toys and books are
left at home, as they can be very distracting to the
other children in the class. If a personal item is brought
to Rainbow, we cannot be responsible for loss or
damage. The Program Director reserves the right to
remove any item perceived as potentially harmful.
Parents’ Night Out
Parents’ Night Out is a babysitting service that is
provided for parents at least twice a year. After the
school closes for the day, parents are invited to bring
their children back to the school for the evening. Staff
members provide games, activities, and movies for
children while their parents have some free time to
themselves. A small fee will be determined at each
location for (and will be paid directly to) the teachers
hosting the event. The service is provided after regular
business hours, and is not regulated by the state’s
licensing agency. Parents are required to register
their children for these events and to leave contact
information in case it is necessary to notify them.
Only enrolled children and siblings may participate in
this event. For more information, please contact your
Program Director.
Outdoor Learning
All children will be going outside daily (weather
permitting.) We follow all state guidelines for outdoor
play and will take into account wind chill factor, high
winds, heat index, pollen count, lightening, rain, or
ice. Children in attendance must have proper clothing
for outdoor conditions. Children well enough to be in
attendance must be well enough to go outside.
9
Positive Redirection and Discipline
Classroom management is a concern most parents have upon enrolling in a new school. At Rainbow, it is believed that
a safe, well-designed classroom—stimulating, challenging, and developmentally appropriate activities —and a welltrained, organized teacher can decrease classroom problems and difficulties. However, as young children are active
learners, challenges are expected to arise. Our teachers use positive communication, positive praise, and redirection to
help children learn prosocial behavior. Teachers focus upon helping children to develop self-discipline. As they grow,
children become emotionally ready to accept others’ feelings, ideas, and opinions. Teachers help young children become
self-disciplined, and ultimately socially competent, by modeling prosocial behavior, allowing them to gradually accept
more responsibility, and by teaching them acceptable alternatives to antisocial behavior(s). Rainbow strives to be the
best early childhood experience for all children. The well-trained and loving teaching staff is focused on promoting
prosocial behavior in all children and will work with all parents and children to successfully achieve this goal.
Based on this belief of how children learn and develop values, Rainbow Child Care Center will practice
the following discipline and behavior management policy:
1. DO praise, reward, and encourage the children.
7. DO provide the children with natural and logical
consequences of their behaviors.
2. DO reason with and set limits for the children.
8. DO treat the children as people and respect their
needs, desires, and feelings.
3. DO model appropriate behavior for the children.
4. DO modify the classroom environment to
attempt to prevent problems before they occur.
9. DO ignore minor misbehaviors.
5. DO listen to the children.
10. DO explain things to children on their levels.
6. DO provide alternatives for inappropriate
behavior to the children.
11. DO stay consistent in our behavior management
program.
** In extreme circumstances when a child’s behavior develops into a dangerous situation to either themselves or others,
removal from the group or classroom may be necessary. At such point, the teacher will be required to speak to the child at
his or her level and discuss appropriate expectations. During this time the child will be provided an optional activity. Once
calm, the child will be invited to rejoin the group.
All employees and management will not:
1. Abuse, endanger or neglect children.
2. Utilize cruel, harsh, unusual, or extreme techniques.
9. Confine children to equipment such as cribs or
high chairs.
3. Utilize any form of corporal punishment.
10. Humiliate, threaten or frighten children.
4. Delegate children to manage or discipline other
children.
11. Subject children to profane language or verbal abuse.
12. Make derogatory or sarcastic remarks about
children or their families.
5. Use physical restraints on a child.
13. Punish children for failure to eat, sleep, or for
toileting accidents.
6. Restrain a child by any means other than holding
children for a short period of time, such as in a
protective hug, so that the child may regain control.
14. Withhold any food, including snacks and treats,
rest, or toilet use.
7. Use prone restraint on a child. Prone restraint is
defined as all items or measures used to limit or
control the movement or normal functioning of
any portion, or all, of a child’s body while the child
is in a face-down position, including physical or
mechanical restraint.
15. Punish an entire group of children due to the
unacceptable behavior of one or a few.
16. Isolate and restrict children from all activities for
an extended period of time.
8. Place children in a locked room, or confine
children in any enclosed area.
10
Behavior and Success Plans
Toilet Training
Our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for
the children enrolled at our school. We are committed
to helping children develop as whole children and we
understand that they may need additional support.
The Behavioral Plan is geared to create a collaborative
agreement to support a child and their family. There
are several steps we take to help the child get back on
the path to success, including incorporating a Child
Success Plan supported by our Education Department.
We make every effort to work with each individual
situation to redirect children and teach them socially
appropriate behaviors.
At Rainbow, toilet training begins when the child
is ready. Since they develop at their own pace, staff
members do not force or rush children. Staff members
and parents work together to encourage children to
have a successful potty-training experience.
Parents and teachers should look for signs that
a child is ready to begin toilet training:
1. The child is dry for long periods of time. The child
may show facial expressions indicating she is
ready to urinate or have a BM.
2. The child has the language abilities to follow
simple instructions: “Point to your hair,” “Sit on the
chair,” etc. and can talk enough to indicate when
she needs to be brought to the bathroom or
needs help. (Miller, 1985, p. 65)
Biting
Biting is one of the most emotionally charged
situations for everyone involved and should be dealt
with as such. We wish that we could guarantee that
biting will never happen in our program but we know
there is no such guarantee. You can, however, count on
us to appropriately handle biting so that it will end as
quickly as possible. We are committed to working with
families of children who both bite and are bitten and
provide reasonable accommodations and assistance
as biting arises.
Tips for Toilet Training:
• Parents and staff members MUST communicate.
Our teachers are trained to use preventative measures
to reduce the incidences of biting in the childcare
setting, including constant supervision of children,
react quickly when children are in dispute, and tune
in to children who are going through a biting stage. If
your child bites or is bitten, you and the parent(s) of the
other child involved receive an Incident/Injury Form
that keeps the identity of both children confidential.
Additional biting resources will be provided upon
enrollment for families enrolling children in programs
where biting is more often to occur.
•
Parents and staff members MUST work together.
•
Consistency at home and at school is a key
element to success.
•
Parents should provide at least three changes of
clothes daily for their child.
•
Success may not be immediate; many accidents
may occur; BE PATIENT!
•
Stress in the life of the child should delay toilet
training as it will not be successful.
•
(i.e. a new sibling, an illness, new student, etc.)
Diapering
We change diapers every 1½-2 hours or on an as-needed
basis until the child is interested in toilet training. Each
classroom that has the accommodations to change
diapers has the diaper changing procedures posted,
and teachers will record any information regarding each
change on the child’s Daily Communication Sheet.
11
Allergies and Restrictions
Upon enrolling, parents are required to document
their child’s allergies and restrictions (this information
is listed on the Enrollment Form and the Medical
Form). The documentation is placed in their child’s
permanent file and listed on the Allergy/Restriction
Forms posted throughout the school. All student
allergies and restrictions are posted in every classroom
(in the area where snacks and meals are served), as
well as in the kitchen, office, and reception area.
Parents of children with allergies and/or restrictions
should review the menus. They are required to
document (on the menu) all of the items that their
child may or may not have. Parents will be responsible
for providing substitutions for food items their child
is unable to consume due to allergies or dietary
restrictions. We encourage that any food brought from
home is in compliance with our nutritional guidelines.
Rest Time
Rest time is an essential part of a child’s day. While no
child is forced to sleep, a scheduled daily rest time is
provided. Children are required to rest on a cot quietly
or work on a quiet activity while sitting on their cot.
The daily schedules for all of the classes are very busy
and children become very active. Rest time is designed
to allow children time to relax their minds and bodies.
Rest time follows lunch each day. Infants follow their
own individual schedules. Toddlers, Young Preschool,
Preschool, and Pre-K Academy children generally rest
for two hours. Rest times may vary due to the needs
of the children. It is not uncommon for Toddlers
to rest longer, or Preschoolers to rest for a shorter
time. However, children are allowed the two hours
if needed. Rainbow supplies children with cots, but
requires that you provide a labeled child-size blanket
and/or crib sheet unless the individual state dictates
otherwise. Families who are required to bring blankets
and/or sheets are also required to take them home
for laundering on their last day of attendance for the
week and return them on their first day attendance
the following week.
Hand Washing
Young children are often exploring their environments
using all of their senses, including touch and taste.
Rainbow understands that thorough hand washing
is critical to your child’s health- especially in a school
where children are encouraged to play outside and
with others. We implement a six step procedure,
displayed above sinks with pictures for your child
to follow. Children will rinse their hands, apply soap,
scrub palms, backs of hands, between fingers and
fingernails, rinse their hands again, dry hands off with
a paper towel, turn the faucet off with the paper towel,
and throw the paper towel in the trash. Below is our
schedule of when we wash hands:
Safe Sleep for Infants
All of our teachers and staff are trained on our
Infant Safe Sleep Policy and are committed to keep
infants safer while they sleep. In following the
recommendation by the American Academy of
Pediatrics, when infants fall asleep they will always
be placed on their backs to sleep. The only exception
is if there is a signed medical waiver on file. Sleeping
infants will be visually checked on by staff every 15
minutes or in accordance to state regulations.

Cleaning and Sanitizing Procedures
For items used by children younger than 2.5 years
old, where they are likely to be mouthed, the washing
and sanitizing of these items is done daily or when
the item has been visibly soiled or contaminated. The
cleaning and sanitizing of toys (and other surfaces)
used by older children is done once a week. Below are
the general sanitation guidelines; all state specified
guidelines will supersede:
Classroom Toys, Materials and Surfaces
• Wash surface or item with warm soapy water
• Rinse surface or item with clean, clear water
• Spray or submerge surface of item for 60 seconds
with a bleach water solution (1 tablespoon
chlorine bleach:1 gallon water)
• Air dry for at least 3 minutes
Temporary Exclusion
To ensure a healthy environment for all children
enrolled in our program, it is our policy to temporarily
exclude children from care who may be infectious or
who demonstrate physical symptoms that require
continuous one-to-one care. If your child begins to
exhibit signs or symptoms of illness while in our care,
we will notify you to make arrangements for your child
to be picked up within one hour. A child who becomes
ill will be separated from the other children and cared
for until he/she can be taken home. Please be advised
that your Program Director may use discretion and
request that a child not return to school and/or may
require a Health Care Provider’s clearance (for any
illness) before returning.
Wellness Checks and Illnesses
A wellness check is done on every child every morning.
This is a check to make sure the child is well enough
to be at the school. Staff members ask parents several
questions regarding their child (e.g., how he/she slept
the night before, what he/she ate for breakfast, how
well did he/she eat, etc.) Staff members also check
the child for any unknown rash, fever, continuously
running nose (yellow/green discharge,) discharge
from the eyes, diarrhea, vomiting, severe coughing,
yellowish skin or eyes, and/or behavior unlike the child
(overly tired, crankiness, etc.) Deciding when a child is
infectious is sometimes a matter of opinion; however,
the guidelines we have established were made under
consultation with several health care advisors and to
be in compliance with licensing regulations. Although
we are sensitive to the fact that as a working parent
you have responsibilities at work, we must make our
first priority safeguarding the health of all the other
children at the school. The childcare environment
we provide is intimate, and in spite of all the health
procedures we employ, the most effective means
of minimizing the spread of infection is to exclude
children from care who may be infectious.
Contagious Diseases
and Health Precautions
The following is a chart that outlines common
childhood illnesses and the criteria that must be
met for children to return to school; at minimum,
all children must have a 24 hour symptom free day
before returning to school. If your child, or anyone
within your immediate household, contracts a
communicable illness, please notify the school
within 24 hours. We must post any incidents of
contagious illness to alert other parents. Upon the
return of a child absent due to a contagious illness, a
signed statement from a licensed physician stating
they are no longer contagious must be provided.
Unless our company policy is more stringent,
we use individual state and health department
regulations when making decisions to exclude
children due to illness.

Medical Records
or over-the-counter dosage levels require a new
label on the container or a signed note from the
child’s health care provider.
A health history and record of immunizations are
required from a licensed physician upon enrollment.
Rainbow complies with all state mandated medical
record policies and required forms and/or waivers
needed for enrollment.
A daily medication form must be completed and
signed by the parent in order for Rainbow to
administer medication. This procedure is the same
for all prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Powders, creams, lip balms, sun screen, vitamins,
etc. are additional examples of items that require a
completed medication form. All forms must state a
specific time the medication is to be administered
(“when needed” or “give if fever” are not acceptable),
unless the medication is a preventative or used for
emergency purposes.
Medications
Rainbow will only dispense over-the-counter and/or
prescription medication that is in its original, labeled
containers, and is accompanied by a doctor’s note
with explicit dosage and administration instructions.
Rainbow will only give medication to the child for
whom the doctor’s note is written and for whom the
medication container is labeled. One doctor’s note
per course of treatment is required. If a child is to be
given a course of antibiotics for a specific amount of
days, the doctor’s note must identify the dates that
the medication is to be given. Rainbow will follow all
over the counter medication instructions. However,
if the bottle states “consult a physician” for your
child’s age, we will need a doctor’s note in order to
administer the medication. Changes in prescription
Each location has a designated locked medicine
container for refrigerated medicines and all others are
stored in a designated area of the building, in a locked
container labeled specifically for medicine. Please turn
in all medication forms, doctor’s notes and medication
to a member of management. Medications must
be taken home each day, with the exception of
preventative and emergency medications (i.e. EpiPens, Benadryl, inhalers, etc.). Expired medications
must be discarded.

SAFETY AND SECURITY
Safe and Secure Atmosphere
For the protection of all the children, Rainbow
maintains a strict release policy. Our enrollment forms
require two names of individuals and their relationship
to the parent and the child with whom the child may
be released. In addition to the names, we require
advance notice that someone other than yourself will
be picking up your child. You may notify the Program
Director in writing or via phone. The Program Director
may return your call to verify the request. Rainbow will
not release any child without advance notice. Picture
identification will be required at the time of pick up.
Ensuring the safety of the children at Rainbow is
extremely important to the entire team. The following
safety procedures have been established:
1. Safe and secure systems and procedures:
•
A key fob or security code door at the entry of
the building provided access to only enrolled
parents and staff members (select locations).
•
A check-in/out computer at the reception
desk that monitors which children and
parents are in the building at all times.
•
Staff members are required to wear the
Rainbow Child Care Center’s uniform. All
staff members are required to successfully
complete a criminal background check as a
condition of their employment.
•
A 24-hour monitored fire system.
•
A monitoring system that allows the
administration to view every classroom,
outdoor playing area, and parking area of
the property at all times (available at some
locations).
3. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
•
A list of unsafe products and recalled items
is kept on-site. Please see your Program
Director if you are interested in obtaining this
information.
2. Safe arrival and departure procedures are
posted in the lobby and are strictly enforced:
•
•
•
If a child is dropped off or picked up while
his/her classroom is in the gym, safe arrival
and departure procedures still must be
observed.
Supervision
Our number one priority is the safety and well-being
of each child in our care. To ensure we are providing
the best supervision possible, all staff members must
adhere to the following:
Parents are required to bring their child into
the school, check their child in at the checkin/out computer, walk their child to the class,
write the daily information on their child’s
daily sheet, and leave their child with the
teacher.
At pick-up time, parents are required to check
out their child on the check-in/out computer,
walk to their child’s class, pick-up their child’s
daily sheet and other belongings, inform
their child’s teacher that they are picking up
their child, and depart the school with their
child. Parents are required to ensure that their
child remains with them while arriving and
departing from the school.
16
•
Never leave a child unattended.
•
Keep the classroom door closed at all times.
•
Never let a child leave the classroom without
adult supervision.
•
Know the number of children you are supervising
at all times.
•
Name-to-Face Headcount Sheets are completed
every hour and at every transition; this includes,
but is not limited to: going/returning from
outside, gym/great room, bathroom, another
classroom, field trips, bus, etc.
•
Staff members must be able to see and hear the
children in their care and be readily available for
(potential) emergencies at all times.
Monitoring System
be held criminally responsible if they fail to report
suspected abuse or neglect. Such reports may be
made anonymously. For additional information,
please contact your local authorities or visit your
state’s website.
We take extensive measures to ensure the safety and
well-being of all the children we care for. We have
several tools and resources available to aid in providing
a safe and secure environment, including our stateof-the-art camera systems. These systems allow
our Home Office team to perform periodic quality
assurance checks, in order to make improvements to
the classroom and curriculum, as well as providing a
quick and effective monitoring system for emergency
situations. In an effort to maintain the security and
privacy of our staff and children, our centers are only
able to view camera footage in real-time. Our goal is
to provide the best educational experience, where our
administrative teams are able to focus on the children
in our care and the best interests of the center.
Custody/Visitation
Parents of children in care shall be permitted free
access, without notice, throughout the school
whenever children are in care. In cases where an
enrolled child is the subject of a court order (i.e.
custody order, restraining order, or personal protection
order) we must be provided with a certified copy of
the most recent order and all amendments thereto.
The orders of the court will be strictly followed. In the
absence of a court order on file with administration,
both parents shall be afforded equal access to their
child as stipulated by law. We cannot, without a court
order, limit the access of one parent by request of the
other parent, regardless of the reason. If a situation
presents itself, where one parent does not want the
other parent to have access to their child, we suggest
that the parent keep the child with them until a court
order is issued. If conflicting court orders are presented,
the most recently dated court order will be followed.
Confidentiality
Rainbow will work with all families and staff members
to ensure confidentiality regarding the care of the
children in our program. All details regarding a specific
child are to be kept confidential and private in regards
to that child. In other words, any information about
your child will be discussed with you and your family
only. Records are reviewed by regulatory agencies and
maintained by the school management. If your child
is involved in an incident with another child, school
management will not reveal the names of the parties
involved. Details in regard to other children will not
and cannot be discussed with anyone other than that
child’s family members. Our employees are to uphold
this policy at all times.
Once presented with a personal protection order or a
restraining order, we are obligated to follow the order
for the entire period it is in effect. Employees cannot, at
the request of anyone except the issuing judge, allow
a personal protection order or a restraining order to be
violated. We will report any violations of these orders
to the court.
Visitors are allowed in child care areas only at the
discretion of the Program Director. All visitors will be
accompanied by a staff member at all times.
Mandated Reporting
Under the Child Protective Services Act, mandated
reporters (people who have established relationships
with children based on their profession) who have
their suspicions that an enrolled child has been or
is being subjected to any form of hitting, corporal
punishment, abusive language, ridicule, or harsh,
humiliating or frightening treatment, or any other
kind of child abuse, neglect, or exploitation by
any adult, whether working at the school or not,
are required by state law to report the concern
immediately. Employees are not required to discuss
their suspicions with parents prior to reporting the
matter to the appropriate authorities, nor are they
required to investigate the cause of any suspicious
marks, behavior or condition prior to making a
report. Under the Act, mandated reporters can
Late Pickup
Our schools close promptly at the closing times
indicated in our operational procedures. When a child
is picked up late, there will be a late fee charged as
outlined in your Enrollment Financial Agreement.
Administrators will begin notifying parents at closing
if they fail to pick up their child. They will continue
to try all of the authorized contacts for the child
until they speak with someone who can pick up the
child. However, if no parent, guardian, or authorized
contact can be reached within one hour, Rainbow, at
its discretion, may notify the legal authorities.
17
General Emergencies/
Emergency Situations
We do our best to be prepared for any possible
emergency situations. As required by each individual
state licensing agency, we schedule and practice
emergency evacuations and drills. We have established
an Emergency Management Plan that outlines safety
procedures in the event of an emergency. These plans
are posted in all classrooms and all employees receive
training upon hire and are also provided refresher
trainings throughout the year. If an actual emergency
necessitates an evacuation, the Program Director
and supportive staff will contact you as soon as the
children have been relocated to a safe area. If you
need information pertaining to an emergency and are
unable to reach the center, please call our “We Care”
customer line at 1-800-90-LEARN.
Field Trips
Field trips may be planned for four-year-olds through
school-agers throughout the school year and summer
activities. Parents will be provided notification from the
Program Director requesting permission that their child
participates. The notification will include a description
of the destination, date, time frame, and means of
transportation. Parents are welcome to volunteer as
chaperones. Parents will provide self-transportation
unless arrangements have been made for group
transportation. First aid supplies will be brought along
on the field trip. A person trained in first aid/CPR will
also attend the trip. All children attending the field
trip will have identification, emergency transportation
numbers, and an up-to-date health record. Name-toFace Headcount Sheets are completed every hour and
at every transition; this includes when children get
on the bus, arrival at the destination, departure from
destination, and arrival at the school.
Student Accidents
If a child becomes injured or involved in an incident
while at Rainbow, parents will be notified immediately
and an Incident/Injury Form will be completed by the
staff member(s) present and the Program Director. Once
signed by the Program Director and the parent, a copy
of the Incident/Injury Form will be given to the parent,
and a copy will be retained at the school in the child’s
file. If the child is in need of medical attention, we will
contact the parent. We will make sure the child receives
any necessary emergency treatment until a parent or
emergency contact is notified and/or present.
Drug Free Environment
In the interest of protecting the security and health of
all as well as maintaining sanitary conditions, smoking
is not allowed on company premises. The possession,
processing, using, distribution, discussion of or being
under the influence of prohibited drugs while on
company property is prohibited. Unauthorized use or
possession of alcohol, or being under the influence of
alcohol while on company property is prohibited as well.
“Company property” includes, but is not limited to, any
company school and company parking lots. In the event
a staff member suspects a parent, guardian, or authorized
contact may be intoxicated or under the influence, he or
she will not release the child. School management will
be notified and will contact the local authorities.
Transportation
Rainbow Child Care Center provides transportation
to and from participating public schools. It is our
responsibility to ensure the safety and security of your
children on and off the school bus. It is the parents’
responsibility to notify the public school in writing of
their plans for transportation regarding their children.
Parents must also notify Rainbow if there are any
changes to their child’s normal school (i.e. half or
full days off from school, early release days, winter or
spring breaks, etc.) and/or if the child is absent from
school. Each year (or upon enrollment) the parent
must write a letter to the public schools stating that
Rainbow will be their child’s primary transport to and/
or from school. The parents will also be responsible to
fill out a Permission to Transport Form annually or upon
enrollment as well. Name-to-Face Headcount Sheets
are completed every hour and at every transition; this
includes when children get on or off the bus.
Firearms and Weapons
At no time is any person, aside from a uniformed
law enforcement officer, permitted to carry any type
of firearm, ammunitions and/or weapons on school
property for any reason. Violation of this policy will
result in immediate dismissal from the program.
18
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES
Enrollment Process
The school is open from _____am to _____pm Monday
through Friday throughout the year, with the exception of
holiday and training closures. Please refer to your Family
Calendar of Events for additional closings. A full week’s
tuition is charged for weeks observing a holiday or closed
for employee training. Children are enrolled on a first
come, first serve basis, without regard to race, religion,
nationality, sex, or disability. Rainbow realizes that some
children may require additional support. Please fill out and
return the Special Needs Enrollment Form, so we can make
arrangements to help your child succeed in the classroom.
Each child enrolled in Rainbow must have an updated
school record with all state and Rainbow required forms.
This file is confidential, and will be shared with other
staff members only as required to meet the needs of
the child. Emergency contact information must be
reviewed by the parent at least every six months for
accuracy. Enrollment in the school is open to children ages
__________through __________. The Program Director
will conduct an orientation with each family to review the
necessary Rainbow and licensing required documents
and informational pieces for enrollment. During the
orientation, the Director will also review the Enrollment
Financial Agreement which outlines all financial policies.
All fees that are discussed are due at the time of enrollment.
Severe Weather Closures and Delays
Our priority is to ensure the safety of our families,
children, and staff. In the event of severe weather,
Rainbow administration will determine if the regular
hours of operation need to be adjusted. The most
up-to-date closing information can be found on our
website at: www.rainbowccc.com/schoolclosings.
Closures and delays will also be detailed on each
school’s local television stations, as well as on each
school’s answering machine (if applicable.) Please
see the Family Connection Board, which is located in
the lobby, for a list of local TV stations that will air the
closing information. If a school must close after the
children and staff has arrived, closing information will
be detailed on our website and local television stations
and the parents will be contacted by telephone.
Tuition is not adjusted in the event that regular hours
of operation are affected due to severe weather.
Holiday and School Closures
Rainbow locations will be CLOSED for the following holidays
and training day:
• New Year’s Day
• Thanksgiving Day
• Good Friday
• Thanksgiving Friday
• Memorial Day
• Christmas Day
• 4th of July
• Christmas Eve

specific communication details.
• New Year’s Eve
(Closes at 3:00 p.m.)
Public School Closures
• Labor Day
• Columbus Day
(Employee Education Day)
When public schools are on break, we offer our Varsity
Club and Summer Camp that are full of exciting, ageappropriate activities and lessons for your schoolaged children. If your school-age child does not
attend public school due to a holiday, snow day, or for
any other reason, an additional fee will be charged for
staying the entire day at the school. Please see your
Program Director for specific information.
Please note, if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Rainbow
locations will be closed on the business day closest to the
actual holiday.
Rainbow Child Care Center pays special attention to enrollment
during the holidays, in particular the days surrounding
Christmas and New Year’s. The Rainbow administration may
determine that attendance is too low to support a center
remaining open on these days. On the rare occasion that
the decision is made to close a center due to extremely low
attendance, Rainbow Child Care Center will notify parents well
in advance so that alternate care can be arranged, if needed.
*Available at most locations.
19
Child Attendance
Solicitation
Rainbow Child Care Center offers an educational
program in which all children participate and learn.
Therefore, it is very important that all children attend the
program according to their predetermined schedule
(i.e., full time or part time). If for some reason a child
will be late or absent, parents are required to notify
the school with this information. Parents should notify
the school by 9:00 am when their child will be late,
as attendance is checked at this time, and the lunch
count is finalized. To maintain our quality program and
licensing regulations, we are required to schedule staff
based on the number of children enrolled. The school
is not responsible to reduce or refund tuition for daily
absences due to weather, holidays, illness, or vacation.
It is not our policy to allow for “make-up” days. Please
inform your school by 9:00am any time your child is
going to be absent and when he or she is expected
to return.
In consideration of Rainbow Child Care Center (RCCC)
accepting children for enrollment, we ask parents to
agree not to solicit, directly or indirectly, any employee
or agent of RCCC to enter into an employment contract
or that of an independent contractor with the parents for
six months after their employment with RCCC has ended.
This agreement is applicable to employees of RCCC who
work at the school in which the parents’ child is enrolled.
Rainbow Child Care Center has incurred costs related
to the recruitment, hiring, training and supervision that
factor into employing qualified staff. When parents sign
the Solicitation Agreement Clause (located in the back of
the Family Handbook,) they agree to pay RCCC any legal
fees or court costs associated with this breach of contract.
*This agreement excludes evening and weekend
employment provided by employees of RCCC.
Babysitting
For children attending the school full-time (4 or 5 full
days), vacation time is available and is outlined in the
Enrollment Financial Agreement. There will not be
a pro-rated or discount rate if the child is absent for
less than five consecutive days. If a child is out of the
school on an extended leave (due to medical reasons,
parent’s maternity leave, extended vacation, etc.) the
parent will be responsible to pay all fees in accordance
with the Enrollment Financial Agreement to maintain
the child’s spot within the classroom. If this amount is
not paid, the child’s place will not be guaranteed upon
return. A two week notice is required to withdraw
from the program. Once a two week notice is given, all
vacation time is forfeited.
Rainbow discourages staff members from providing
babysitting services on their own time. If a staff
member does provide babysitting services, the staff
member is acting on his/her own accord, and is not
a representation of Rainbow Child Care Center. Before
services are arranged, both the parent and the staff
member must sign a release form, which will not hold
Rainbow responsible for the performances of the staff
member, including transportation of the children.
Withdrawal/Termination of Enrollment
We require two weeks written notice if you intend to
withdraw your child from the program. At any time
during a child’s enrollment, Rainbow has the right to
withdraw a family for the best interest of the school.
Rainbow will terminate a child’s/family’s enrollment
for the following reasons:
Nondiscrimination
Rainbow is a child care facility and preschool, caring
for children ages __________through __________.
Rainbow will work with all families to ensure a
successful transition into our program, as well as a
positive, meaningful, and educational experience
while participating in our program. We do not
discriminate regardless of race, gender, creed, color, or
national origin. Rainbow Child Care Center will accept
children with special needs and will work with each
child’s personal/individual caretakers and therapists if
proper care can be provided for all children enrolled.
•
Disruptive or dangerous behavior
•
Abuse to staff, children, or school property
•
Inability of Rainbow Child Care to meet the needs
of the child
•
Non-payment of tuition
•
Habitual absenteeism
•
Violation of Parent Code of Conduct
Written notice of the termination will be given to the
family. It will include the reason(s) for the termination
and the date of the child’s/family’s final day in the
school. Once a two week notice is given, all vacation
time is forfeited.

Classroom Pets and Animals
Animals and pets in our classrooms can be a great
learning experience for the children. For any pets
or animals that we have in our classrooms, we must
follow the guidelines listed below:
1. Parents shall be notified of the animals and pets
in the school.
2. Animals and pets that are potentially aggressive
or in poor health shall be separated from children
in care at all times.
Media
Rainbow Child Care Center encourages a family
atmosphere and a “home away from home”
environment. From time to time, your child(ren) will be
photographed. Special events and everyday playtime
are excellent times to create memories and we may
post photos around the classroom and/or school.
We use these photos for teaching, arts & crafts, and
learning opportunities. Occasionally, we use internal
photographs for promotional purposes such as display
boards, website fillers, brochures, school highlights on
social media, and/or memory books. We respect your
right as a parent to decide whether you would like your
child to be photographed and will ask you to complete
a form upon enrollment to grant or deny permission.
3. Children having contact with animals and pets
shall be supervised by a staff member who is
close enough to remove a child immediately
if the animal shows signs of distress or if
the child shows signs of treating the animal
inappropriately.
4. Animals and pets shall not be allowed in food
preparation and eating areas during meal or
snack time.
5. Litter boxes, pet food and dishes, and pet toys
shall be inaccessible to children.

PARENT SUPPORT AND INVOLVEMENT
Communication
Parent Involvement Committee
Parent involvement is considered absolutely
necessary for the successful development of young
children. Parents are encouraged to become involved
in the education of their children and their child care
environment. At Rainbow, everyone works as a TEAM
(TEAM-Together Everyone Achieves More) to ensure
that all children receive the best education available.
Each school’s management is always available to listen
and work through any concerns parents or staff may
have. Please feel free to call the school, stop in the office
to talk or send an e-mail to set up an appointment. It
is our goal to make sure we provide a safe, secure, and
educational environment. It is our commitment that
all families are pleased with the school and we will
strive to achieve their satisfaction.
Daily communication is an essential component
to promoting a partnership between parents and
teachers. Infants, Toddlers, and children in Young
Preschool receive individual Daily Communication
Sheets. Preschool, Pre-K Academy, and Varsity Club
programs post Daily Communication Sheets on
their Family Connection Boards in the classrooms.
Individualized Daily Communication Sheets for these
classes may be requested if desired.
A Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) is essential to
the communication among everyone at the school.
Optimally, the board is made up of parents and staff,
with the parents acting as the governing unit. Positive
parent involvement from all parent participants is
essential in making the PIC a successful group. Each
PIC meets monthly or bi-monthly to create a Rainbow
Community between parents, teachers and managers,
thus enhancing the school. The parents will take
minutes, set agendas, propose projects, etc. If you are
interested in participating in the PIC, please see your
Program Director for more information.

PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT
Rainbow Child Care Center requires the parents of enrolled children to behave in a manner consistent with decency,
courtesy, and respect. One of the goals of Rainbow Child Care is to provide a “home away from home” atmosphere
for children to learn, develop and feel safe. Ensuring this type of atmosphere is not only the responsibility of the
employees, but also the responsibility of each and every parent or adult who enters the center. Parents are required
to behave in a manner that fosters this ideal environment. Parents who violate the Parent Code of Conduct will not
be permitted on company property thereafter.
Swearing/Cursing
No parent or adult is permitted to curse or use other inappropriate language on-site at any time, if in the presence
of a child or not. Such language is considered offensive by many people and it will not be tolerated. If a parent or
adult feels frustrated or angry, it is more appropriate to verbally express the frustration or anger using non-offensive
language. At no time shall inappropriate language be directed toward members of the staff.
Threatening of Employees, Children, Parents or Adults
Threats of any kind will not be tolerated. All threats will be treated seriously and will be reported to the appropriate
authorities.
Physical/Verbal Punishment of Your Child or Other Children
No form of corporal punishment is permitted while on company property. While verbal reprimands may be
appropriate, it is not appropriate for parents to verbally abuse their child. Doing so may cause undue embarrassment
or emotional distress. Parents are always welcome to discuss a behavior issue with the teacher and to seek advice
and guidance regarding appropriate and effective disciplinary procedures. Parents are prohibited from addressing,
for the purpose of correction or discipline, a child that is not their own. All behavior concerns should be brought
to the classroom teacher or a member of management’s attention.
As a parent of a child who is enrolled at Rainbow Child Care Center, I acknowledge that I have received the Parent
Code of Conduct Policy, and I agree to abide by the policy as it is set forth and explained.

PEANUT FREE POLICY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
In order to keep our children happy, safe, and healthy, we are a peanut free school. Some children have very
severe allergies, which could pose harm to them when they use their sense of touch and taste to explore their
environment. Severe allergies can lead to potentially life-threatening reactions.
Exposure to peanuts can occur in different ways:
Direct contact: The most common cause of a peanut allergy is eating peanuts or peanut-containing foods.
Sometimes direct skin contact with peanuts can trigger an allergic reaction.
Cross-contact: This is the unintended introduction of peanuts into a product. It’s generally the result of a food
being exposed to peanuts during processing or handling. (For example, hand- shakes, touching a surface that was
exposed, etc.)
Inhalation: An allergic reaction may occur if you inhale dust or aerosols containing peanuts, such as that of
peanut flour or peanut oil cooking spray.
We want to give each child the safety and freedom to engage all of their senses and explore. Please help us
maintain a safe, healthy environment for all our children.
As a parent of a child who is enrolled at Rainbow Child Care Center, I acknowledge that I have received the Peanut
Free Policy, and I agree to abide by the policy as it is set forth and explained.

SAFE SLEEP PRACTICES/POLICY
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected death of a seemingly healthy baby for whom no cause
of death can be determined based on an autopsy, an investigation of the place where the baby died and a review
of the baby’s clinical history. In the belief that proactive steps can be taken to lower the risks of SIDS in child care
and that parents and child care providers can work together to keep babies safer while they sleep, this facility will
practice the following safe sleep policy.
Safe Sleep Practices
cribs. Only sleepers, sleep sacks and wearable blankets provided
by the parent/guardian and that fit according to the commercial
manufacturer’s guidelines and will not slip up and around the infant’s
face may be worn for the comfort of the sleeping infant.
1. All child care staff working in this room, or child care staff who may
potentially work in this room, will receive training on our infant Safe
sleep Policy.
10. Swaddling will not be permitted, unless a physician’s written
statement authorizing it for a particular infant is provided. The written
statement must include instructions and a time frame for swaddling
the infant.
2. Infants will always be placed on their backs to sleep, unless there is
a signed sleep position medical waiver on file. In that case, a waiver
notice will be posted at the infant’s crib and the waiver filed in the
infant’s file. The written statement must include how the infant
shall be placed to sleep and a time frame that the instructions are
to be followed.
11. Wedges, other infant positioning devices and monitors will not be
permitted unless a physician’s written statement authorizing their use
for a particular infant is provided. The written statement must include
instructions on how to use the device and a time frame for using it.
3. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies are
placed on their backs to sleep, but when babies can easily turn over
from the back to the stomach, they can be allowed to adopt whatever
position they prefer for sleep.
12. All individual crib bedding will be changed daily, or more often
as needed, according to the rules. Bedding for cots/mats will be
laundered daily or marked for individual use. If marked for individual
use, the sheets/covers must be laundered weekly or more frequently
if needed.
4. We will follow this recommendation by the American Academy of
Pediatrics. However, child care staff can discuss with parents how to
address circumstances when the baby turns onto its stomach or side.
5. Visually checking sleeping infants. Sleeping infants will be
checked daily, every 15-20 minutes, by assigned staff. The sleep
information will be recorded on a sleep chart. The sleep Chart will
be kept on file for one month after the reporting month. We will be
especially alert to monitoring a sleeping infant during the first weeks
the infant is in child care.
We will check to see if the infant’s skin color is normal, watch
the rise and fall of the chest to observe breathing and look to
see if the infant is sleeping soundly. We will check the infant
for signs of overheating including flushed skin color, body
temperature by touch and restlessness.
13. Infants who arrive at the center asleep or fall asleep in other
equipment, on the floor or elsewhere, will be moved to a safetyapproved crib for sleep.
Safe Sleep Environment
18. All parents/guardians of infants cared for in the infant room will
receive a written copy of our Infant/Toddler safe sleep Policy
before enrollment.
14. Pacifiers will be allowed in infants’ cribs while they sleep but may not
be attached to the child.
15. A safety-approved crib in compliance with CPCS and ASTM safety
standards with a firm mattress and tight fitting sheet will be used.
16. Only one infant will be in a crib at a time, unless we are evacuating
infants in an emergency.
17. No smoking is permitted in the infant room or on the premises.
6. Steps will be taken to keep babies from getting too warm or
overheating by regulating the room temperature, avoiding excess
bedding and not over-dressing or over-wrapping the baby.
19. To promote healthy development, awake infants will be given
supervised “tummy time” for exercise and for play.
7. Room temperature will be kept between 68-75˚F and a
thermometer will be kept in the infant room.
Best Practices
8. Infants’ heads will not be covered with blankets or bedding. Infants’
cribs will not be covered with blankets or bedding.
1. All staff will participate in Responding to an Unresponsive
Infant practice drills twice each year, in April and in October, in
conjunction with fire drills.
9. All sheets must fit tightly around the mattress. No loose bedding,
pillows, bumper pads, blankets or swaddlers etc. will be used in

POSITIVE REDIRECTION AND DISCIPLINE
POLICY ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Classroom management is a concern most parents have upon enrolling in a new center. At Rainbow, it is believed that a safe, well-designed classroom
- stimulating, challenging, and developmentally appropriate activities - and a well-trained and organized teacher, decreases classroom problems
and difficulties. However, as young children are active learners, challenges are expected to arise. Our teachers use positive communication, positive
praise, and redirection to help children learn prosocial behavior. Teachers focus upon helping children to develop self-discipline. As they grow, children
become emotionally ready to accept others’ feelings, ideas, and opinions. Teachers help young children become self-disciplined and ultimately socially
competent, by modeling prosocial behavior, allowing them to gradually accept more responsibility, and by teaching them acceptable alternatives to
antisocial behavior(s). Rainbow strives to be the best Early Childhood experience for all children. The well-trained and loving teaching staff is focused on
promoting prosocial behavior in all children and will work with all parents and children to successfully achieve this.
Based on this belief of how children learn and develop values, Rainbow
Child Care Centers will practice the following discipline and behavior
management policy:
All employees and management will not:
1.
DO praise, reward, and encourage the children.
2.
DO reason with and set limits for the children.
3.
1.
Abuse, endanger or neglect children.
2.
Utilize cruel, harsh, unusual, or extreme techniques.
3.
Utilize any form of corporal punishment.
4.
Delegate children to manage or discipline other children.
DO model appropriate behavior for the children.
5.
Use physical restraints on a child.
4.
DO modify the classroom environment to attempt to prevent
problems before they occur.
6.
5.
DO listen to the children.
Restrain a child by any means other than holding children for
a short period of time, such as in a protective hug, so that the
children may regain control.
6.
DO provide alternatives for inappropriate behavior to the children.
7.
7.
DO provide the children with natural and logical consequences of
their behaviors.
Prone restraint of a child is prohibited. Prone restraint is defined
as all items or measures used to limit or control the movement or
normal functioning of any portion, or all, of a child’s body while the
child is in a face-down position.
8.
DO treat the children as people and respect their needs, desires,
and feelings.
8.
Prone restraint includes physical or mechanical restraint.
9.
Place children in a locked room or confine children in any enclosed area.
9.
DO ignore minor misbehaviors.
10. Confine children to equipment such as cribs or high chairs.
11. Humiliate, threaten or frighten children.
10. DO explain things to children on their levels.
12. Subject children to profane language or verbal abuse.
11. DO stay consistent in our behavior management program.
13. Make derogatory or sarcastic remarks about children or their families.
**In extreme circumstances when a child’s behavior develops into a
dangerous situation to either themselves or others, removal from the
group or classroom may be necessary. At such point, the teacher will be
required to speak to the child at his or her level and discuss appropriate
expectations. During this time the child will be provided an optional
activity. Once calm, the child will be invited to rejoin the group.
14. Punish children for failure to eat or sleep or for toileting accidents.
15. Withhold any food, including snacks and treats, rest or toilet use.
16. Punish an entire group of children due to the unacceptable
behavior of one or a few.
17. Isolate and restrict children from all activities for an extended period
of time.
As a parent of a child who is enrolled at Rainbow Child Care Center, I acknowledge that I have received the Positive Redirection and Discipline Policy and
I agree to abide by the policy as it is set forth and explained.

GENERAL HEALTH POLICY
AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
To ensure a healthy environment for all children enrolled in our program, it is our policy to temporarily exclude
children from care who may be infectious or who demonstrate physical symptoms that require continuous oneto-one care.
If your child begins to exhibit signs or symptoms of illness while in our care, we will notify you to make arrangements
for your child to be picked up within one hour. At minimum, all children must have a 24 hour symptom free
day before returning to school. Unless our company policy is more stringent, we use individual state and health
department regulations when making decisions to exclude children due to illness. Please be advised that your
Program Director may use discretion and request that a child not return to school and/or may require a Health Care
Provider’s clearance (for any illness) before returning.
As a parent of a child who is enrolled at Rainbow Child Care Center, I acknowledge that I have received the General
Health Policy as it is stated in the Family Handbook, and I agree to abide by the policy as it is set forth and explained.
