The laser print process is not a replacement for sublimation but is an EXCELLENT add-on. Different types of Laser printers - important Some of the Forever papers work in almost any laser printer, be it Monochrome, CMYK or White Toner, others are for specific types or makes of printers – read on. MonoChrome CMYK White Toner – - Black and White Laser printer This is your basic full colour Laser or LED printer This is the OKI Laser printer with Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and White The SAMSUNG led printers generally don’t work well with the Forever papers. If you already have a laser printer, then buy a few sheets and try it out. You need to find the right settings on your laser printer to make the toner fuse onto the transfer media. The Forever Transfer papers in Detail 1. Classic Plus - for white / light fabrics – CMYK printers Cheaper per sheet than inkjet white / light fabric transfer paper and works similarly. 2. Laserdark – for dark fabrics – CMYK Laser printers This paper is one of the few that can be cut with a vinyl cutter to remove areas of white, then weeded and lifted off the backing sheet with application tape, before finally being pressed onto the shirt. 2 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 3. Multitrans – for glossy hard surfaces – CMYK and White Toner machines Images printed on this paper can be transferred at temperatures of as little as 100C so you can decorate items not possible with other transfer technologies. This paper is for items such as ceramics (including mugs), glass (drinking glasses, flat glass sheets, mirrors and so on), hard plastics (such as pens, rulers), metal sheets, hardboard, basically anything that’s glossy and hard. Mugs and drinking glasses printed with this process should be coated for maximum durability, but it is possible to decorate uncoated products, in which case they can only be hand washed carefully. When using a CMYK Laser, you need to stick to white / light items. When using the White Toner machine, you can produce some awesome effects! When pressing flat items, you need a digital thermometer (they cost around R 400 + VAT) and a silicone mat for glass items. The Silicone mat is around R 600 + VAT and allows the item to heat up very slowly so it doesn’t crack. Pens are pressed with a pen press (R 4,695 + VAT) 3 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 4. Multitrans Gold / Silver – Monochrome, CMYK and White Toner machines This is the same used for the same products as the Multitrans with two major differences: 1. It can be printed with all the printers above 2. You print in black and when the transfer is complete whatever was black on the print becomes gold or silver depending on the paper used. This means, that you now essentially have a digital foiling system. You can combine the foiling with a full colour print as you will see in some of the examples below. 4 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 5. LaserDark A-foil + B-paper – CMYK and White Toner Machines The A-foil is for transfers onto anything that is porous or which has pores in it big enough to allow the glue from the B-paper to stick to it. It can be used on Fabrics, Polyprop, Canvas, Paper, Books, some leather, card, serviettes, toilet paper, wide grain wood and so on. It’s translucent film which is printed on with the laser printer, and then pressed together with the Bpaper. The B-paper is basically a white glue, and it sticks to places where there’s toner on the A-foil. Once transferred, the B-paper is removed and the A-foil is pressed onto the item. Transfer temperatures can be as low as 100C (which is why items like polyprop bags can be decorated). If using a CMYK printer, you won’t get white transferring as the printer has no white ink, so areas of white in the print will remain the colour of the product you’re printing. Also you need to choose your artwork carefully as very light colours will not transfer as the glue on the B-paper won’t have enough toner to bond to. Once the image is transferred, it can be further decorated with foil, no weed-flex or even flock (more on this later) If using the white toner machine, areas of white will be printed and you can even add white designs to the print. Light colours will have the white toner added to them and will also transfer. In both cases, only the toner transfers. In areas where there’s no image, there’s no residue. 5 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 6. No-Weed Flex + B-paper – Monochrome, CMYK & White Toner Machines The No Weed Flex film is available in a variety of colours, such as standard colours, white, metallic colours, gold, silver, neon colours. You print onto it in black only, and press onto the B-paper. The glue from the B-paper sticks to the toner and when you do the transfer, the colour from the flex film transfers onto your item. As easy way to think of this paper is that it’s like transfer vinyl, but is printed rather than cut – this means you can do detail that’s not possible to produce with transfer vinyl. This film transfers onto anything that is porous or which has pores in it big enough to allow the glue from the B-paper to stick to it. You can use it in conjunction with the Laserdark A-foil, and you can also combine different sheets to produce a multi-colour transfer. It can be used on Fabrics, Polyprop, Canvas, Paper, Books, some leather, card, serviettes, toilet paper, wide grain wood and so on. 6 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 7. Laser transparent & Laser Light The Laser transparent is for CMYK laser printers and the Laser light is for the White Toner machines. It’s a paper for light / white fabrics, and leave very little to residue behind in areas of white once transferred to the fabric. This paper is best used for solid graphics and logos. It’s not really suitable for photographs, unless the image is first rasterized (turned into dots – see page 9) which is a complicated process if you’re not using the Forever RIP (more on the RIP on the next page). 8. Finishing papers – Flock and Foil These papers are used after the print process with the Laserdark A-foil (we’ve also managed to get this process right by using the Laser transparent and Laser Light papers but it is tricky). What you do is select the area which you want to flock or foil and print it in black (even if it’s on a black fabric). Once done, you apply the foil or flock and press it. This then sticks to the black print. The flock comes in sheets and the foil in rolls. 7 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 The RIP software, do I need it for the white toner machines ? The RIP is special software written by Forever specifically for the White Toner Laser printer and for the forever transfer papers. It introduces a level of control over the printing function which is not possible with the standard printer drive, for example: 1. You can rasterise an image (this means turn it into dots). Why would you want to do this ? Well it makes the image softer to the touch, more durable and saves you money because less toner is required. It is possible to rasterise an image in Photoshop, but it requires a 25 step process which is not easy to accomplish even by an experienced user. 2. The RIP gives you control of the white density, so that you can apply more or less white as the image and substrate requires it. When using the standard print driver, the density is pre-set and can’t be easily changed. This results in too much white being laid down and it wastes money (because the white toner is the most expensive). STANDARD DRIVER RIP The image on the left is printed with the standard driver. As you can see there’s way too much white in the image. Just the top two advantages when used in the RIP save you up to 40% of your toner costs (which amount to between R 3.00 and R 5.90 per print ! 3. When using the standard driver, you will almost always get a white outline around your graphics when printing them. The RIP allows you to remove this. 4. The RIP has ACCURATE job costing to the cent, including the paper, and exact amounts of toner and other consumables used. This is very useful for correctly costing your job. 5. You can replace colours in your image from the rip without needing Photoshop. The RIP is included in our White Toner systems. It can also be purchased separately if required. 8 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 Example of a rasterized image. This saves you toner, feels much softer on the shirt, and washes much better. On the following pages, we show some of our complete laser systems. If you already have the heat presses all you need is the laser printer. If you already have an existing CMYK or Monochrome laser printer, we urge you to try it first. In all likelihood it will work just fine. If it doesn’t then you can consider the CMYK printer we recommend, which is the OKI C610. This is the only printer we’ve had success on ALL the Forever papers with. The cheaper models don’t print on the Laserdark A-foil or the Multitrans Gold / Silver sheets. 9 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 CMYK Corporate Gift System A4 This system is an excellent entry into the corporate print industry and is really good or corporate logos, graphics and product images. When printing onto porous substrates such as Fabrics, Paper, some leathers, wide-grain wood surfaces, some diaries, tissue, polyprop bags and card, you’re not limited to just white surfaces – you can in fact even decorate dark surfaces, as long as your image doesn’t contain white. Anything white on a dark substrate will become the colour of the substrate as this printer hasn’t got white ink. This CMYK printer is an inexpensive introduction into the power of the laser process and the Forever papers. If you can afford it and intend to produce a large variety of corporate gifts, then we strongly recommend the white toner solution (see following pages). With the same printer, you can easily print paper and card for business cards, invoices, invitations and so on.Printing light /hWhite cotton shirts with this process is cheaper than any other process as both the paper and toner work out cheaper. There are cheaper printers on the market but they don’t print on all the papers and thus severely restrict your market – there’s no point. The CMYK Corporate Gift system includes: OKI C610 CMYK A4 Laser printer (with 3 year OKI onsite warranty) Muggit 38 x 38cm Clamshell High Pressure Press Muggit Blue Mug Press Heat Tape Starter packs of transfer papers + Starter pack of Forever no cut flex Product Marketing CD “Marketing & Running your own print business” guide Coreldaw ™ X6 Essentials -For only R 20,044.00 + Vat = R 22,850.16 - Add an A4 Sublimation printer for maximum versatility – R 6,036.30 (incl.) Add a PEN press for pressing pens (ruler attachment included) – R 5352.30 (incl) 10 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 White Toner Corporate Gift System A4 The White Toner printer has completely changed the corporate gift landscape, because for the first time, we have a printer which prints WHITE. This is a really big deal, as it allows us to print the same artwork on ANY colour substrate and add white where there would usually be just the background colour of the item. Just how awesome is this mug ? On the corporate gift side of things, you can print even more products than ever before with the addition of white. When printing a black shirt, the sky is the limit, want to print leather ? No problem. The A4 White Toner Laser based Corporate Gift system includes: OKI White Toner A4 Laser printer (with 3 year OKI onsite warranty) Forever RIP Software (saves you a ton of money in time and also toner – see page 18) Muggit 38 x 38cm Clamshell High Pressure Press Muggit Blue Mug Press Heat Tape Starter packs of transfer papers + Starter pack of Forever no cut flex Product Marketing CD “Marketing & Running your own print business” guide Coreldaw ™ X6 Essentials -For only R 58,016.00 + Vat = R 66,138.24 - Add an A4 Sublimation printer for maximum versatility – R 6,036.30 (incl.) Add a PEN press for pressing pens (ruler attachment included) – R 5352.30 (incl.) 11 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 White Toner Corporate Gift System A3 The A3 version of this system includes a naturally more expensive printer, but the print cost is lower than the A4 ! Doesn’t make sense ? Let me explain. Not only are the A3 toner cartridges around 15% cheaper but they also have a 30% higher yield than the A4, so even if you bought the A3 printer and only printed A4 with it, your saving would be around R 1.03 in toner costs. If you’re planning on printing large volumes, then it pays to rather go for the A3 printer even if you’re only going to print A4. With the A3 printer you can not only do larger shirts, but items like shopping bags and mirrors can be decorated more fully. The A3 White Toner Laser based Corporate Gift system includes: OKI White Toner A3 Laser printer (with 3 year OKI onsite warranty) Forever RIP Software (saves you a ton of money in time and also toner – see page 9) Muggit 60 x 40cm Swing-away High Pressure Press Muggit Blue Mug Press Heat Tape Starter packs of transfer papers + Starter pack of Forever no cut flex Product Marketing CD “Marketing & Running your own print business” guide Coreldaw ™ X6 Essentials -For only R 95,532.00 + Vat = R 108,906.48 - Add an A4 Sublimation printer for maximum versatility – R 6,036.30 (incl.) Upgrade to Corel X7 SOHO (has better graphics functions than essentials) – R 1196.00 (incl.) Add a PEN press for pressing pens (ruler attachment included) – R 5352.30 (incl) 12 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 If the laser process is so great why do I still need sublimation: Sublimation is better for things like mousepads, coasters, keyrings, which are going to be subjected to constant friction / rubbing. With the laser process, the toner will wear away where the mouse runs across it or the keyring rubs in the pocket. With sublimation it won’t. When printing mugs, you still need coated mugs to make the print washable. The Sublimation print cost is lower but there are instances where the laser process is better, like non-white mugs or metallic colours on the mug. Sublimation gives a much glossier finish on glossy substrates like Unisub products, metal panels, wooden coasters and so on. When printing onto items that are coated, the sublimation process is cheaper than the laser process, so the saving alone pays for the sublimation printer. A laser printer uses dry toner, which when transferred sits on the surface of the printed item. The toner is thicker than a sublimation or inkjet transfer which means that colours are richer which is perfect for logos and solid colours. When transferring onto a clear glass substrate the ink is more opaque (less see through) and text can be printed finer. Coupled with the Forever papers, a laser printer can transfer onto both coated and uncoated substrates (though washabilty on uncoated products isn’t great) and can also transfer at much lower temperatures, so plastic items like pens, usb memory sticks and the like can also be printed. A laser printer is much faster than a sublimation printer, and can be used for both transfers and standard paper printing, so businesscards, letterheads, invitations and the like can also be printed. As the toner is NOT water-soluble, a standard paper sticker printed with a laser printer will not run or smear when wet, so laser printed labels are great for wine bottles, sports bottles and so on. There are some downsides to the laser transfer process laser printer but these are easily overcome by adding a sublimation printer to your print solution (a sublimation printer costs nothing in the whole scheme of things): Disadvantages of Laser print process: 1. Photographs done with a laser are not as good with a laser due to the size of the print dot (easily noticed on a hard surface like a mug, but impossible to see on a T-shirt). Skin tones are not as smooth (again due to the size of the dot) but on a fabric item no one will notice. 2. Printing on Polyester fabrics is not as durable as with sublimation (but then again nothing is). 3. As the print with the laser sits on the surface of the product, some items are not great when done with a laser printer as continued rubbing of the surface will wear the print off – examples of this are mousepads. As the mouse rubs on the pad it wears the toner transfer off. Placemats. 4. While you can print on uncoated mugs, the print is not very durable. For best results coated mugs are required. 13 JG ELECTRONICS 2016 5. Due to the wider variety of products you can print onto, some experimentation is required to perfect the transfer process on non -standard products. 6. Cheap T-shirt presses should ideally be avoided due to pressure limitations, uneven pressure and heat consistency issues. Advantages: 1. Colours are very opaque (not see through), so prints on items like clear glass are much easier to see than those done with sublimation. 2. Transfer times and temperatures are lower than with sublimation, which means that items that wouldn’t be possible to print with sublimation can now be done, like polyprop. 3. It’s possible to transfer images onto items which aren’t specially coated for sublimation, this gives you access to a much bigger variety of products (an endless variety in fact). 4. By using the gold and silver Forever transfer papers, you can effectively digitally foil pretty much the same items that would normally be doing with standard foiling, in any size up to A3 and with a complexity that conventional foiling could never duplicate. 5. You have a multitude of finishing options on products that have not existed in a digital format before, for instance, you can print a piece of wood in full colour, then add silver or gold to it, and even add flock. We’ve printed a mug with gold and full colour and it looks awesome ! 6. You can foil a product and also print it in full colour This includes metals, woods, ceramics, glass, some plastics (including pens), leather, fabrics and so on. 7. By using a RIP (such as the Forever RIP), you can accurately calculate your costs down to the cent for each job that you do. 8. The OKI printers that we use for the laser transfer process are all covered by a 3 year onsite warranty (subject to the customer registering their purchase with OKI). 9. If the laser printers with White toner are used, even dark and black objects can be printed. 10. With the addition of the Forever no-cut flex (which comes in single colours), you can decorate items in single spot colours, and special colours such as neon, white, and metallic colours and then add full colour to this. No other digital print system allows for this. 14
