And who knows what 2017 may bring, so let us focus on the Jewish year 5777. In Hebrew, 5777 is written as tav, shin, ayin, zayin. I will tell you a little secret, if you promise not to share it with any more than a hundred of your closest friends. Tav, shin, ayin, zayin, really is equal to 777, there are no Hebrew letters for the thousands. And sevens are very important in the Torah. Because God created the world in seven days, we get a wonderful day of rest on the seventh day of the week. Rosh haShanah is really the first day of the seventh month, as it is the top of the year. First of the 7 8 9 10 11 12 seventh month 6 5 4 3 2 1 The seventh year is the sh’mita, sabbatical year, when the earth gets to rest and when all debts are forgiven. All slaves are freed at the end of seven years. And there are seven matriarchs and patriarchs, Sarah, Abraham, Rebecca, Isaac, Rachel, Leah and Jacob. Etc. There are seven branches on the menorah that stood in the Tabernacle and the Temple. In gematria, gimmel + dalet, the Hebrew word gad, which equals seven, means luck. And mazal, another word for luck, mem + zayin + lamed = 77. But there is more. If we divide the Hebrew letters of the name of the year into tav, shin, ayin and then the zayin, we end up with teisha’ zayin, which means nine sevens. Nine times the beauty and wonder of the seven days of creation. Nine times the rest and holiness of the seventh day, Shabbat. Nine times the sweetness and forgiveness of Rosh haShanah. Nine times the ecological concern of the seventh year, the sabbatical year. Nine times the freedom and dignity of the emancipation of the seventh year. Nine times the humanity and righteousness of the matriarchs with the patriarchs. Nine times sanctity and purity of the menorah of the Temple. Nine times luck and fortune of gad. And since mazal, mem + zayin + lamed = 77; twice nine times the blessing and providence of mazal. Finally, mazal tov = 77 + tov. Tov is tet, vav, bet. Tet = 9, vav + bet, 6 + 2, leaves one more special thing for you alone in the Jewish year, 5777. Whatever 2017 may bring, we all can depend on one more special blessing promised us in the Jewish year. My family and I wish you all a happy and healthy secular new year, and pray that your special blessing in 5777 be wonderful Rabbi Harry A Manhoff, PHD 2|Page Jan/Feb 2017 DONATIONS Temple Beth Sholom counts on your generosity to operate successfully. Allen Dunne, Steve Dolich, and Vicki Hudson. Each of them shared their thoughts on how their service affected them and what we can do as Jews to help veterans return to full and healthy citizenship. Vicki has graciously allowed us to reproduce her inspiration presentation here for you. “Thank you for this opportunity to stand before you and respond to the question, “How can the Jewish Community support Veterans? I must acknowledge that this week, of all weeks, has been a tumultuous one. I am a retired soldier, who served 33 years in the United States Army. And for all but the final year, for 32 years, I served under a cloak of invisibility that denied my existence and ability to live openly and authentically. For twelve years, that denied the existence of my family. And now, we face the possibility of a resurgence denial of our existence as one of the goals of the new administration. How can you support Veterans? Do not allow the denial of recognition and right to exist for the many LGBT persons serving now, and having served in our military. Take action to communicate you do not support removing safeguards to our service and inclusion in benefits that everyone else takes for granted as secure. A significant issue among veterans is homelessness. Women veterans are far more likely to face homelessness than men veterans. Women veterans who are single mothers are at even greater risk. How can you help? Contribute resources and time with organizations that battle the increase of homelessness with veterans, especially women veterans. Donate to shelters personal hygiene products for women that address monthly needs, gift cards for food and other expenses, or your volunteer time in transition programs to help women veterans move forward. Additionally for older women veterans, give rides to medical appointments, visit at nursing homes and at the Veterans Home and listen to their stories, and share your life stories too.” VETERANS continued on next page 6|Page Jan/Feb 2017 VETERANS continued from previous page “What about the men veterans, perhaps you are thinking? Why am I only speaking of support for women veterans? Well, honestly, when you think of a veteran, what comes to mind? For the majority of you, a male veteran is the figure you thought of. Women veterans are often asked, where their husband served. Many women that served, and served overseas, don’t regard themselves as veterans because of that societal misconception. There are plenty of representations of male veterans in our society, and numerous means to support them. I stand here to say, one thing the Jewish community can do to support veterans, is make an effort to identify and provide assistance, support, and acknowledgement to women in our communities and in society at large, who have served our nation in our military. This is what a veteran looks like. We are different genders, different orientations, and different colors, diverse as the nation we protect and defend. That is our strength, and the strength of the nation. How can the Jewish community support veterans? At any other Veteran’s Day, I would continue to speak of donations, contributions of time, and the logistics of care packages and in conclusion give suggested nonprofit resources to join with. But this Veteran’s Day is unlike any other. This week is unlike any other. How can the Jewish Community support veterans and acknowledge our sacrifices? Take action to ensure that our Constitution is not denied, that our rights continue in force, that the diversity of this nation is upheld. That not only the ‘other’ among the veteran communities but the ‘other’ across our society, are defended and their right to exist is demanded. I served in silence of my true, authentic self for 32 of 33 years military service. I will not go back into that closet. My family will never again be denied its existence. I ask you, the Jewish community, my tribe, to stand with me and so many others that are in fear now, as a result of this week’s political events. It’s easy to support the visible veterans; look for the rest of us, and lend your support there. Thank you.” Please check out the organization called Swords to Plowshares. NEW TIME SISTERHOOD Book Club, led by Loretta Siegel. BOOK: The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich “Not since Anna Diamant’s The Red Tent or Geraldine Brooks’s People of the Book has a novel transported readers so intimately into the complex lives of women centuries ago or so richly into a story of intrigue that transcends the boundaries of history. A “lavishly detailed” (Elle Canada) debut that masterfully captures sixteenth-century Venice against a dramatic and poetic tale of suspense. Hannah Levi is renowned throughout Venice for her gift at coaxing reluctant babies from their mothers using her secret “birthing spoons.” When a count implores her to attend his dying wife and save their unborn son, she is torn. A Papal edict forbids Jews from rendering medical treatment to Christians, but his payment is enough to ransom her husband Isaac, who has been captured at sea. Can she refuse her duty to a woman who is suffering? Hannah’s choice entangles her in a treacherous family rivalry that endangers the child and threatens her voyage to Malta, where Isaac, believing her dead in the plague, is preparing to buy his passage to a new life. Told with exceptional skill, The Midwife of Venice brings to life a time and a place cloaked in fascination and mystery and introduces a captivating new talent in historical fiction.” Fri 2/10/17 at 8pm in the Main Sanctuary Tu B’shevat Seder (NOT dinner) - Healing Shabbat oneg sponsored by YOUR NAME HERE Sat 2/11/17 at 10am in the Little Shul Wed 2/15/17 @ 7:30 pm Fri 2/17/17 at 8pm in the Main Sanctuary Tu B’Shevat Sat 2/18/17 at 10am in the Little Shul Oneg sponsored by YOUR NAME HERE Sun 2/19/17 GERSTEN – No Torah School PRESCHOOL closed for Presidents Day GERSTEN – No Hebrew School Jewish History Shabbat sponsored by Sisterhood.
