OMEN FORMATION: PART ONE
FADE IN: OPENING CREDITS

INT. VIEWING ROOM, WHITEFIELDS - DAY 1 (1750)
Images flicker on the intense hollow eyes of CORPORAL
DANIEL BLAKEMORE as he sits in a darkened room taking
an 'Implicit Association Test'.
Displayed on the top left of a LARGE SCREEN is the
caption 'WAR' adjacent to 'Bad'. On the top right is
the word 'COUNTRY' accompanied by 'Good'. A montage of
photos and text begin to flash up underneath - to the
accompaniment of benign pastoral music.
DANIEL holds a two-button POINTER, methodically
assigning the images to right or left. The SILHOUETTE
of a woman can be seen sitting behind, watching.
MONTAGE: At first the random images are easy to divide.
Pictures of children playing, happy families at dinner,
lovers holding hands in a sunset, sheep grazing in
pasture: words like Love, Home, Pleasure, Wonder,
Laughter, Success - these DANIEL assigns to 'COUNTRY:
Good' by clicking the right hand button.
Photos of young armed insurgents, refugees fleeing a
war zone, bodies lying in a ditch, the carnage left
after explosions - these are easily clicked to 'WAR:
Bad', along with words like Hate, Terror, Enemy,
Trauma, Fear, Failure. Occasional mistakes are marked
by a red cross. As he gets the hang of it, DANIEL's
clicking gets faster and faster... His eyes go into a
stare. The images crescendo to a stop.
In the darkness behind, the SILHOUETTED FIGURE leans
forward.
SUMMERS
Do you want to take a break?
DANIEL shakes his head.
On the SCREEN the captions now change places. WAR is
aligned with 'Good', COUNTRY with 'Bad'. The cascade of
text and images resumes. The pastoral music is
overdubbed with a clashing dissonant beat.
DANIEL struggles with the test. He keeps on putting the
violent images in the 'Country: Bad' category instead
of the 'War: Good'. Red crosses flash up to highlight
his mistakes.

DANIEL looks increasingly agitated. He glances back to
the FIGURE behind him and then presses the buttons more
quickly. The images flicker on his eyes. Discordant
music builds as the montage drums home the disturbing
message WAR-GOOD: COUNTRY-BAD. DANIEL blinks rapidly,
and begins to keel over fainting...
POV: the camera descending at speed in a dark space.
The lights turn on to reveal LT. COLONEL SUMMERS.
SUMMERS sees DANIEL has fallen on the floor and is
shaking convulsively. She opens the door and calls to
an ORDERLY.
SUMMERS (CONT'D)
Can I have some help in here!
ORDERLIES come in to help secure DANIEL. But as he
comes round from his seizure, DANIEL sees one of them
prepping an injection. DANIEL begins to yell and fight
off the ORDERLIES. It takes several men to restrain him
before the injection is administered, and DANIEL falls
into a stupor.

INT. PRIVATE ROOM, WHITEFIELDS - DUSK 1 (2104)
DANIEL is coming round, lying on his bed in his private
room. SUMMERS is checking his pupil dilation.
SUMMERS
What did you see?
DANIEL
I fell...
SUMMERS nods to the ORDERLY.
SUMMERS
120 mg Sodium Amytal.
The ORDERLY begins to dish out two bright blue pills.
SUMMERS (CONT'D)
Daniel. You've got to stop
blocking these images out.
Fighting it doesn't help...
The ORDERLY hands DANIEL the pills. He scoops them into
his mouth, and washes them down with a glass of water.
SUMMERS (CONT'D)
You've got to let go.
SUMMERS leaves. As soon as the door is closed, DANIEL
spits out the pills.

PUSH out of Daniel's room into a darkened clinical
corridor. It's very late at night. The corridor is
deathly quiet except for ragged breath sounds.
PULL BACK TO REVEAL: the POV is DANIEL's, so too the
ragged nervous breaths. He's dressed in a HOODED PARKA.

INT. SPIRAL STAIRCASE/BASEMENT, WHITEFIELDS - NIGHT 1

Carefully, quietly, DANIEL moves down a spiral
staircase into a basement area.
Daniel runs along a low dark corridor.

EXT. WHITEFIELDS, COAST. NIGHT - DAY 1 (2358)

Louder BREATHS as DANIEL runs across the bleak
windswept grounds. DANIEL hits the ground near a razor
wire fence.
DANIEL pulls away the wire, seemingly oblivious to the
razor edges, and then crawls under the fence.
As he makes his escape we see a Ministry of Defence
sign saying WHITEFIELDS MRTU: NO TRESPASSING.

INT. CRAIG’S OFFICE, PARAPSYCHOLOGY UNIT - DAY 2 (0945) 7
CRAIG STEVENSON (wired, hyper intelligent but
emotionally inept) is hunched over his computer, music
blaring through the earphones of his Ipod. Cryptic code
scrolls on the screen as he downs a double espresso.
Scattered around the desk are other coffee cups,
chocolate bars and empty hi-energy drink cans. MONAGHAN
is at the door.

But CRAIG is oblivious, lost in his code and music.
MONAGHAN (CONT'D)

MONAGHAN (CONT'D)
Up all night?
CRAIG
Precognition software. Just
compiling the last bit of
code.
MONAGHAN nods with a wry smile.
MONAGHAN
You might want to shave...
On CRAIG, blank.
MONAGHAN (CONT'D)
You adoring public waits...
MONAGHAN heads out as CRAIG remembers, getting up with
a jolt

Press launch.

Hollowed eyed and more unkempt, DANIEL approaches the
buildings of Clyde University, staring at the STUDENTS
and ACADEMICS with an unsettling gaze.
DANIEL stops and takes out a ragged piece of paper from
his pocket.
CLOSER: a printed out WEB PAGE about the PARAPSYCHOLOGY
UNIT's internet based 'Precognition Register'. Below it
are PHOTOS and short biogs of MONAGHAN and CRAIG.

FX: SLOW MOTION: from DANIEL's POV time dilates as he
stares at the oncoming vehicle with fascination.
MONAGHAN is braking - hard - but the stopping distance
is too short.
From MONAGHAN's POV everything happens all at once.
JUSTINE is yelling. DANIEL isn't moving out of his way.
MONAGHAN yanks the wheel to one side. The car swerves.
But there's not enough time. The bumper swipes DANIEL's
legs.
LOW ANGLE: DANIEL is spun up by the glancing blow and
slowly falls on the hard tarmac.
WIDER: MONAGHAN's car screeches to a halt. BYSTANDERS
look over. MONAGHAN and JUSTINE quickly get out of the
car. MONAGHAN has already pulled out his mobile.
MONAGHAN (TO MOBILE)
Ambulance... There's been an
accident.
DANIEL lies motionless on the ground. JUSTINE is
checking his airways, breathing and circulation. She
slips her long fingers close to DANIEL's neck.
A tense moment as JUSTINE feels for a carotid pulse.

A couple of dozen JOURNALISTS and SPONSORS are drinking
white wine and eating finger food from the buffet.
Among them is the young attractive journalist, CAROLINE
GREGORY from the Evening Herald. By the podium,
Professor MICHAEL HOLLOWAY (charming, well dressed, and
manipulative) waits for CRAIG.
CRAIG
(shutting his mobile)
Still engaged.

blue light of an AMBULANCE approaches.

to give you an insight into
their work I'd like to
introduce one of our research
associates, currently running
a large project on
Precognition and Foresight Craig Stevenson...
Applause. CRAIG looks up and sees HOLLOWAY gesturing.
The applause is for him. CRAIG heads over, nearly
tripping on the step. As he takes the mic, he knocks
over a carafe of water from the lectern.
CRAIG (TO MIC)
I knew I was going to do that.
Some laughter. Trying to rescue the carafe, CRAIG
manages to drop his notes.
CRAIG (CONT'D)
That's foresight for you. I've
seen the future. And it sucks.
Louder laughter. Despite the clumsy start, CRAIG has
everyone's full attention. He discards his notes.
CRAIG (CONT'D)
OK. I was going to make some
brilliant remarks about
retrocausation and time
reversal but... I see a lot of
open notebooks. So I want you
all to think of an odd number,
with two different digits,
below fifty and write it down.

JUSTINE takes the web page. MONAGHAN joins JUSTINE.
MONAGHAN
You saw the way he just stood
there. What did he think he
was doing?
JUSTINE
Trying to find you by the look
of it.
JUSTINE shows MONAGHAN the webpage. The PARAMEDICS
wheel DANIEL into the back of the ambulance.
JUSTINE (CONT'D)
I'll go with him.
MONAGHAN nods and turns to give his statement to the
police.
CRAIG (V.O.)
(from next scene)
It was nearly a hundred years
ago that Albert Einstein
proved that time is just a
dimension like everything
else.

Which raises the question: can
we move backwards as well
forward in time?

philosophy is to science what
pornography is to sex. A poor
substitute. Though some
people, bizarrely, seem to
prefer it...
Laughter. CAROLINE's laugh seems louder than the rest.

Laughter at the double entendre. CRAIG for a moment

A beat. CAROLINE takes out the notebook. CRAIG is
right.
CRAIG (CONT'D)

A large number of hands go up.
CRAIG (CONT'D)
About 75 per cent. Of course
it doesn't make me
clairvoyant. You're all just
horribly predictable. I made
an educated guess. However,
the experiments I have devised
take great pains to exclude
educated guesses...

A beat. JUSTINE gestures over to the cubicle. MONAGHAN
moves over.
MONAGHAN
I just wanted to say...
A beat. DANIEL senses MONAGHAN's approach without
looking up.
DANIEL
...Don't blame yourself.
DANIEL looks calm but trance like, remote, focused on
something in the mid distance.
DANIEL (CONT'D)
I wasn't in danger.
MONAGHAN
You could have been killed.
DANIEL
I'm not going to die like
that.
A beat. JUSTINE picks up his chart.
JUSTINE
Looks like no serious
injuries... luckily.
DANIEL
No such thing as luck.
DANIEL looks pale. He puts his hand on his stomach.
MONAGHAN
Are you in pain?
DANIEL
Not pain...

I thought.... But it's
useless... look at me... Not a
scratch... I'm wasting time.

MONAGHAN

DANIEL
I can't talk now. They're
taking me for a scan.
JUSTINE
Actually, they said it's going
to be a couple of hours yet.
DANIEL smiles a strange smile. A beat on JUSTINE and
MONAGHAN.
The SHO arrives with a porter.
SHO
Looks like your lucky day.
They found a window. Come on,
let's do your scan.
MONAGHAN and JUSTINE share a look.
MONAGHAN
We can talk about this some
other time.
A rattle as a PORTER un-clicks the bed.
DANIEL
There is no other time.

HOLLOWAY propels CRAIG towards the waiting journalists.
CAROLINE is the first to move in.

slowly being fed into the whirring tube of a CT scan.
The RADIOGRAPHER is making some last minute
preparations in a separate room. Behind him the SHO
enters with MONAGHAN and JUSTINE.
SHO (OOV)
We'll keep him in overnight
for Obs. Standard for
concussion.

DANIEL has now disappeared into the long CT scan tube.
SHO
Once neurology have checked
him over, the psychiatric
consultant will have a word.
The RADIOGRAPHER has pulled up scans of DANIEL's skull
SHO (CONT'D)
How fast did you say you were
going?
MONAGHAN
About twenty five miles per
hour.
SHO
Amazing. Not a scratch on him.
No fractures either.
On DANIEL now emerging from the tube.
SHO (CONT'D)
Whatever he's on, I'll have
some.
CLOSER on DANIEL, closing his eyes.

injection.
CRAIG turns to his right and looks through a window
where he sees the Implicit Association Test taking
place.

round a corner, MONAGHAN can see DANIEL in the LAB with

ANOTHER ANGLE: yawning and bleary CRAIG is coming into
RECEPTION. He sees MONAGHAN frozen like a statue.

But MONAGHAN glares, puts his fingers to his lips, and
indicates DANIEL.

A burning farmhouse on the border. Black plumes of
smoke billow from the roof. An old Lada in flames by a
stone wall.
DANIEL (V.O.)
We were peacekeeping on the
border. There'd been an
incident at this farmhouse. It
was bloody chaos.
An OLD BOSNIAN MAN is yelling at the soldiers as a
British helicopter swoops through the clouds of smoke
above the farm house and hovers overhead.
DANIEL (V.O.) (CONT'D)
We were supposed to be doing
spot checks.
A hundred or so meters further down from the house, a
flat bed truck approaches filled with civilian refugees
- old MEN, WOMEN and CHILDREN. The soldiers look
nervous, fingering their safety catches, talking on
headsets as a PARA forces the truck to stop. Two PARAS
move round to the back - the CIVILIANS are told to
disembark and submit to searches.
DANIEL (V.O.) (CONT'D)
We were looking for smugglers.
Drugs, medicines, guns.

At the back of the crowd is an OLD SERBIAN WOMAN in a
shawl, she carries a bundle in her arms.

The OLD SERBIAN WOMAN is weeping, wailing. She pushes
past the other civilians, and past the first THREE
PARAS at the side of the truck. They yell at the OLD
WOMAN but she keeps on running.
DANIEL (V.O.) (CONT'D)
This old woman was beside
herself...
ANOTHER ANGLE: The OLD WOMAN is running down the road
towards DANIEL, who stands by a nearby BEDFORD TRUCK.
DANIEL (CONT'D)
(in real time)
Get back to the truck!
But she keeps coming, clutching the bundle. DANIEL
takes the safety catch off his rifle.
DANIEL (CONT'D)
I said get back! Shit!

down with horror. He takes off his belt.

And it wasn't a bomb she was

her leg the OLD WOMAN is in her death throes. DANIEL

After a few tense moments, Daniel reaches up with one
hand, Monaghan grabs it and begins to pull.
RAPID FLASHBACK MONTAGE: DANIEL's immediate past
flashing before his eyes in reverse. The wind farm. The
bird wings. Driving to the hotel. Running over the busy
dual carriage way. Nearly being run over by Monaghan.
MONAGHAN is trying to pull DANIEL back from the brink,
but the soldier is heavier, his weight is pulling
MONAGHAN perilously close to the edge himself.
RAPID FLASHBACK: Helicopter rotors at Whitefields.
Escaping the unit at night. Helicopter rotors over the
road block. The Old Woman running towards him. The Old
Woman running away. The Old Woman pulling him close,
whispering something in his ear with her last breath.
JUSTINE arrives breathless near the warning sign.

A bell TOLLS. Tyres CRUNCH on gravel. A long sleek
black HEARSE pulls up, followed by a LIMOUSINE.
Shiny black parade boots click on the ground: some
MOURNERS arrive for Daniel's internment.
WIDER: away from the main group, MONAGHAN is dressed in
black, accompanied by JUSTINE. They both hold flowers.
ANGLE ON: the HEARSE as black suited BEARERS slide a
conventional CASKET onto their shoulders.
MONAGHAN watches the bearers carry DANIEL'S CASKET.

EXT. CEMETERY, LONDON - DAY 5 (1105)
The BEARERS carry the CASKET into the cemetery. Among
the mourners following are grieving RELATIVES, FRIENDS,
BROTHERS, PARENTS, WIFE and - most painfully of all his two young daughters KATY (7) and ELLIE (5).
Seeing the children, MONAGHAN for a moment wavers.
JUSTINE places a supportive hand on his arm.
MONAGHAN and JUSTINE maintain a respectful distance.
ANGLE ON: the MILITARY contingent in uniform, with them
LT. COLONEL SUMMERS and her adjutant GLYNIS. Among the
group are several SOLDIERS from Daniel's regiment,
including LUCAS HEGARTY. They all eye MONAGHAN and his
team with barely concealed contempt.

purpose under the heaven...
RELATIVES come forward to throw flowers in the grave.
VICAR (CONT'D)
A time to be born, and a time
to die...A time to kill, and a
time to heal...
First among these are DANIEL's WIDOW and her two young
DAUGHTERS. Weeping, they jettison their sprays and then
hide themselves in their mothers arms. LUCAS moves
forward to console DANIEL's grieving WIDOW.
MONAGHAN bows his head.
VICAR (CONT'D)
A time to weep, and a time to

Now the MILITARY CONTINGENT come forward, with SUMMERS.

third chime it's through the door, approaching MONAGHAN
as he lies frozen in his bed. DONG.
On MONAGHAN looking up at the shadow approaching his
bed. He tries to move, but he's frozen with fear.
REVERSE: a FIGURE in a HOODED PARKA is looming over

WIDER: MONAGHAN folds the paper up in a fury, and
hurries off down a busy street.
But as MONAGHAN walks, he sees reflected in a shop
window the FIGURE in the HOODED PARKA walking some
distance behind him.
MONAGHAN hurries his pace, and crosses the road.
The FIGURE in the HOODED PARKA quickens in response. He
seems to be gaining on MONAGHAN...
MONAGHAN pace quickens with his heartbeat. Panicked he
glimpses round to catch the FIGURE in the HOODED PARKA.
MONAGHAN takes another turn to...

MONAGHAN speeds up down the street towards the entrance
of the SUBWAY.

MONAGHAN reaches the entrance of the SUBWAY. A HOMELESS
MAN and his BLACK DOG stand to one side.
MONAGHAN is about to enter, when suddenly the BLACK DOG
BARKS at him. SFX: a LOW RUMBLING sound getting louder.
FX PULL FOCUS: The entrance to the subway narrows and
darkens.
MONAGHAN steps back.
FLASHFORWARD: MONAGHAN sees the abstract light change
to broad strips of flashing white light.
WIDER: as MONAGHAN backs off from the dog and the
subway entrance. He looks pale and shaken. A BELL
tolls, once.
MONAGHAN looks around He can't see the FIGURE in the
HOODED PARKA anymore, and begins to doubt his own
senses.
A SECOND BELL TOLLS... MONAGHAN looks up and sees a
spire. Something draws him toward the sound of a third
TOLLING BELL.
ANOTHER ANGLE: JUSTINE comes out of the subway, just in
time to see MONAGHAN heading off.

MONAGHAN is in quiet empty square. In the middle is a
dark semi-abandoned Church of Scotland Kirk.
MONAGHAN stops and looks around before hurrying towards
the dark narrow entrance.

INT. KIRK, SOUTH SIDE, GLASGOW - DAY 8 (1247)
MONAGHAN comes into the dark forbidding interior and
closes the door behind him.
The church has an abandoned semi derelict feeling.
WINGS flutter in the eaves. MONAGHAN startled.
MONAGHAN sits down in one of the pews and takes a deep
breath trying to compose himself.
A moment of quiet as MONAGHAN catches his breath
Suddenly a noise.

it, MONAGHAN turns to the DARK FIGURE in the doorway. A
RUMBLING SOUND.
MONAGHAN backs off.
REVERSE TO: DANIEL stands in the doorway.
Daniel..
MONAGHAN
But it's JUSTINE who steps into the light.
Douglas?
JUSTINE
A beat before MONAGHAN adjusts his eyes.
JUSTINE (CONT'D)
What's going on?
MONAGHAN looks confused, embarrassed.
MONAGHAN

JUSTINE
I been trying to catch up with

MONAGHAN gets up to look out of the doorway.
MONAGHAN

FLASHFORWARD: MONAGHAN sees the abstract light. White
bands of white light. A white sphere out of focus.
JUSTINE can see he has the same symptoms as Daniel MONAGHAN hyperventilating, clutching his stomach.
JUSTINE (CONT'D)
You look terrible... Sit down.
JUSTINE returns MONAGHAN to his place in the pew.

MONAGHAN gets up, as if dispelling some of his
foreboding.

You're seeing Daniel aren't

MONAGHAN
A beat. But MONAGHAN's reaction tells JUSTINE all she
needs to know.

JUSTINE
Oh. Just a hunch.

him.
SUMMERS (CONT'D)

SUMMERS watches MONAGHAN turn back to his car.
WIDER: MONAGHAN makes his way back to his car parked on
the clifftop car park, a bleak lonely figure against
the remote windswept coast.

The ROAR of the helicopter hovering overhead.
Close ON DANIEL SHOUTING at the OLD WOMAN to get back,
but she keeps on coming. He releases the safety catch
on his rifle and raises it in the air.
LUCAS has now moved up behind DANIEL. He raises his
rifle too.
CLOSE IN on DANIEL as he keeps his rifle aimed high.
CLOSE IN on LUCAS - as he levels his weapon at the OLD
WOMAN.
CLOSE on LUCAS' eyes/ CLOSE ON his finger on the
trigger.
A LOUD CRACK as the bullets are discharged. DANIEL's

A few days later. The unit is quiet. TINA and CRAIG are
playing Chase the Lady.

doesn't even bother to flip it over.
TINA
I don't want to play this
anymore.
CRAIG turns over the Queen.
CRAIG
Suit yourself.
JUSTINE is at the door to CRAIG's office.
JUSTINE
I know how he does it...
TINA looks curious. CRAIG is non-commital.
JUSTINE (CONT'D)
It's something to do with the
way you shuffle the cards. Do
it again....
TINA adds a Queen to two plain cards, shuffles and lays
them face down on the table. JUSTINE passes her hand
over. TINA retracts her finger from the Queen.

I get it. Because you know
where it is, you always
withdraw your hand from the
queen. That's a tell.
JUSTINE imitates TINA'S motion
TINA
God. It was that simple?
CRAIG
Everyone has something
different. Other people might
linger... like
CRAIG shows his hand hovering longer over the queen and
then drops all the cards.
Oh no...
What?
CRAIG (CONT'D)
JUSTINE
CRAIG grabs TINA's hand and takes her towards the LAB
CRAIG
I need to borrow you for a
moment.

CRAIG is in the OBSERVATION ROOM monitoring TINA taking
the Zener Card test, comparing it with two CCTV windows
of both DANIEL and MONAGHAN taking the test.
JUSTINE
Is something wrong?
CRAIG desperately checks some computer code scrolling
on the screen.
CRAIG
It's a disaster... I won't be
able to publish now.

JUSTINE
I thought you said this
algorithm was infallible...
CRAIG
It's not the random number
generator... ..
CRAIG switches to a view of the five Zener cards
embedded in the software.
CRAIG (CONT'D)
It's the cards. They're kept
in a cache on the computer.
But if the subject holds down
on the mouse too long....
Then the software can't
retrieve it...
JUSTINE
So what does that mean?
CRAIG
It totally invalidates the
percentages.
CRAIG looks deflated.
CRAIG (CONT'D)
It'll take me years to find
results as good as them.
JUSTINE
So Monaghan and Daniel... They
weren't precognitive after
all?
CRAIG
Now we'll never know...
JUSTINE smiles, behind her TINA whoops and heads out to
reception.

TINA is out of the LAB, giving MONAGHAN an enthusiastic
hug.
TINA
I didn't know you were coming
back today. They said it could
be another week.
MONAGHAN
I couldn't sit at home any
more. I'd go mad...

CRAIG
You're coming back for good?
A beat. MONAGHAN smiles.
MONAGHAN

bursary has been approved.
MONAGHAN hands a letter to JUSTINE.
JUSTINE
What? Really...
MONAGHAN
I'll supervise most of the
research.
An awkward beat between JUSTINE and CRAIG.
MONAGHAN (CONT'D)
Unless....
JUSTINE
Actually...
CRAIG
I've been helping her with her
PhD... As you asked.
JUSTINE
You don't mind if I carry on
working with Craig?
MONAGHAN shrugs, trying to hide a smile.
JUSTINE (CONT'D)
He's probably right about out
of body experiences though.

CRAIG
It's all neurological.
JUSTINE

So much for keeping an open
mind.
INT. VIEWING ROOM, WHITEFIELDS - DAY 10 (1200)
SUMMERS is at the back of the dimly lit viewing room,
as the images of 'COUNTRY: Good' and 'WAR: Bad' flicker
on the screen. A SILHOUETTED FIGURE sits clicking away
near the screen with the two button pointer. Then the
captions switch places. The clicking becomes less
regular. More error red crosses flash up on the screen,
and then the clicking stops completely.
SUMMERS
Are you OK to carry on?
The SILHOUETTED FIGURE is none other than LUCAS
HEGARTY. LUCAS nods, and carries on clicking. He's soon
clicking away, the images flickering on his eyes.
SUMMERS smiles and nods.
