The Presidents’ Letter - Out and In
I want to thank you for my lovely signature president’s quilt. I will treasure it
always, and remember the many wonderful quilters I have come to know in El
Camino Quilters. Being president for the past two years has been rewarding and
challenging. Thank you for the opportunity!
I look forward to Julie and her board taking the helm in January. Their energy and
knowhow will be so beneficial to the guild. Please join me in supporting them in
their endeavors. I have learned it definitely takes a village to keep a guild going!
Happy 2017 to all of you!
Thank you,
Elizabeth O’Toole, ECQ Pres 2014-16
Thank you so much to Elizabeth O'Toole and the outgoing Board members for their
service over the last two years. Under their leadership El Camino Quilters has
continued to thrive and grow. I look forward to working with our tremendous new
Board through the next two years.
Thank you to Dee Fletcher and her amazing hospitality team for the buffet set up at
the December holiday luncheon. Thank you also to Marlene Charron and Ginger
Evans and their team of decorators. Congratulations to all of the members who won
UFO prizes (even though all who participated are winners since they finished so
many UFO's!).
I appreciate all of the members stepping up to accept roles as committee chairs and
all of the support of members as I was voted in and installed as President.
I look forward to seeing you all in January at the guild meeting and the Road to
California.
Julie Calvario, incoming President of ECQ

JANUARY Program – Susan Bruce
Material Matrix and the Path Taken
I bring my career in illustration and lettering into my
skills as a quilter. In addition to my long-arm
business where I quilt for customers, I am also an art
quilter specializing in my technique I call “Material
Matrix”. This involves interpreting a gridded
photograph with fabric. This process is different than
other gridded photograph methods in that it involves
piecing and a loose, representational style inspired
by the painter, Chuck Close.
I began my quilting business in the fall of 2010 to
combine my love of illustration, lettering and quilting.
I live in Grass Valley, California with Gary, my
partner of 32 years, and our teenaged son Matteo.
My Gammill, a 14’ long arm named Dixie, is located
in my quilting studio in historic downtown Grass
Valley.
Teaching to guilds and in shops and retreats is
currently my passion.
THE OPPORTUNITY QUILT
RAFFLE !!
How exciting that Nancy Telford won the
quilt! She is such a hard worker in the guild
and we are very happy all the way around.

Criteria for the Birthday Month Gift
Should you wonder what should go into that mysterious bag
on your Birthday Month, here is a way of thinking of it. It
should be something new (or so interesting and it is not
new), one or more things that total between $10 and $20. 2
fat quarters won’t do it, but a jelly roll is too much…
**From now on, we will only bring a gift to raffle each
birthday month, no food will be served at this venue except
at Christmas.
Bus Trip to Road to
California
One of the biggest Quilt Shows around
is in Ontario, Ca. in January and we
have a fun trip on the bus to enjoy it.

Wash gently, dry, and press fabric.
Remove selvage. We will save these for a
month in case you need to identify a fabric in
your bag to purchase more.
Cut a dozen (12) squares, 10"x 10" each.
We have noticed that some fabric off the bolt
is barely 40 inches wide, making it very
difficult to cut 4 squares across. You might
consider buying 1 ¼ yd and cutting your
squares 3 across and 4 down.
Place in a gallon size Ziploc bag with your
name and phone number. Drop it off at the
table and pick up your pack next month.
Show us when you make something

Welcome to 2017 Members
and new Members!!!
To make things a little easier for check-in in
January, the Membership Committee is asking
members to:
Complete your renewal forms before you
arrive in January. A copy of the form can be
printed from the web site or from next page here.
Some forms will be available at the meeting if
needed.
After you check in at the door, please go to
the back of the room to turn in your form with your
payment of $60.00. The guild will accept cash,
check or credit card.
After you have turned in your completed
form and your payment, you will receive your
membership packet which will include your
opportunity quilt tickets. Have a great year and
good luck.
Friendship Blocks
Check out the new blocks they will have in the back!
Didn’t you ever just want to have all the blocks done
for a quilt you yearned to make?!
By making a block for these ‘friends’, your name goes
into a drawing after contributing 2 times. 2 names are
picked 3 times a year and you just might be up for the
next round of blocks! Be a friend, be a winner!
- In January, May, & September we announce
the 2 new recipients. These are the new ones for
January thru April!

KENNEL COMFORTERS
Hurrah! The year 2017 is finally here and many of us
have that feeling of newness, freshness, and readiness
to work on and achieve new year resolutions we have
just made. We know we have made resolutions in the
past---they usually aim to improve ourselves, possibly
reduce body size, improve our life in general, and we
always set new goals and make some attempt to keep
them. Sometimes we don't meet our goals. But that
is o.k. because we are human and will do the best we
can.
So, Kennel Comforters wants to start this year 2017
with a big "Thank You" to all the wonderful
individuals who helped KC (in one way or another) to
produce last year 2016 a total number of cat and dog
beds: 1,326 (that represents the number of shelter
animals who slept in a KC bed---1,326 dogs and
cats!) Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our mission
at KC is to (at no cost to the shelters) provide the cats
and dogs with safe and comfortable beds. And that is
what we do each and every year---and thank you to all
of you, our friends, for assisting us to achieve that
goal. Our new years resolution is to make even more
beds in 2017 and continue to make them beautiful
and full of love and warmth.
We are friendly and fun and have all the supplies
needed to make cat and dog beds (including sewing
machines).
Thank you, Merilyne Hickman
We meet the first Friday and
Saturday of each month at the
North County Animal Shelter,
Community Room, (unless our
schedule is changed due to a
holiday)
2481 Palomar Airport Road,
Carlsbad (next to Lowe's Home
Center), 9:30 a.m. to 3-4 p.m.
