Swimming lesson programme March – August 2017 Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex Boston Leisure Centre Gym Swim Classes Relax Kidzone www.bostonleisurecentre.co.uk Lessons 1 Welcome Our swimming lesson programme has been developed through our partnership with Boston Amateur Swimming Club (BASC) and works within the guidelines of the Amateur Swimming Association’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS). The progressive programme starts when your child is just a baby with our parent and child lessons right through to adult lessons and Boston Amateur Swimming Clubs (BASC) Masters swim sessions. Children can start our main group lessons when they are four years old. Adult lessons are for those aged 16 years and over. Each group has various criteria to be passed before the child can move up to the next group. Once passed there are badges and certificates for each group, which can be bought from the leisure pool reception. Information on criteria/ badges can be found on pages eight to eleven. Our children’s group lessons from Ducklings through to Dolphins are run: Monday to Friday Saturday Sunday 4pm – 6pm 8am – 10am 8am – 10am Please note: not all groups are available at all times Each lesson is 25 minutes in duration and each term varies dependent on school terms. The 2017/18 term dates can be found on page five. Course fees – adults and children Four weeks Five weeks Six weeks Seven weeks Eight weeks £16.00 £20.00 £24.00 £28.00 £32.00 3 Enrolment policy Enrolment for group lessons – adults and children After the last lesson of each term we have a dedicated enrolment period. You may book onto our lessons in this time. The enrolment period ends the day before the first lessons. For example, if you would like to book lessons on a Tuesday – you will need to book and pay no later than the Monday before. The term dates can be found on page five. You will need to visit the leisure pool reception with your/your child’s details to be able to book in on our lessons. You will need to complete an enrolment form, giving various information including, full name, address, contact telephone number, medical history and swimming ability. These forms are available on our website: www.bostonleisurecentre.co.uk/lessons or from the reception. Once we have your details we will issue you with a user membership card and we will hold all the details of who is having swimming lessons on our secure database. This unique card will be needed every time you wish to re-book swimming lesson. Lost cards can be replaced at a cost of £3 per card. We can now book you into the correct group for your abilities. Payment is required on booking. Re-booking for group lessons – adults and children If you are already on our swimming lesson programme you will be issued a ticket on one of the last two lesson of the term to state which group you will be in. Your allocated place will be saved up to the start of the open enrolment period , after which unless you have paid your place will be removed. If the place allocated for your child is not suitable you may move the booking during our open enrolment period. Cancellation policy for group lessons – adults and children Please inform us if you have decided to cancel your lessons. Changing swimming lesson time/day It is not possible to change the time or day of your lesson once the term has started. You may change times/days after the term has ended and the enrolment period has started. This allows all those already booked at certain times/days the chance to re-book their slot. Enrolment starts the day after the last lesson of the term and ends the day before the start of the first lesson. Children’s group lessons On arrival for your first lesson, please get your child changed in the appropriate changing room (over 8s must go in their respective changing area). Use the lockers provided; tokens are available from reception – please do not leave belongings on the benches or in the cubicles. Once changed the child will go into the spectator area where he/she will be let through the gate at the start of their lesson. After the lesson the child must go to their changing room from pool side – please do not walk through the spectator area. 2017/18 term dates SWIMMING LESSON TERMS 2016/17 TERM START DATE END DATE T5 T6 Tuesday, April 18 Sunday, May 28 Monday, June 5 Sunday, July 23 To be eligible for a refund or to transfer payment to the next term you must cancel 48 hours before the start of the first lesson. If you are cancelling after the start of the first lesson, we cannot issue a refund. If you would like to re-start lessons you will have to start the enrolment process again. 5 Adults/1-2-1s/rookies Adult lessons It’s never too late to learn to swim. Suitable for beginners, improvers or if you are looking to improve our adult group lessons are ideal. They are held on a Tuesday night between 8pm and 9pm. Lessons are 25 minutes in duration and run alongside school terms, therefore vary between four to eight weeks. Prices for adult group lessons Four weeks Five weeks Six weeks Seven weeks Eight weeks £16.00 £20.00 £24.00 £28.00 £32.00 Please see pages four and five for the enrolment policy. 1-2-1 swimming lessons We offer 1-2-1 lessons throughout the week between 5.30pm and 7pm Monday to Friday, taking place in our main leisure pool during general swimming sessions. The teacher is in the water with you and teaches to the same NPTS criteria, as with group lessons. Enrolment for 1-2-1 lessons – adults and children We still operate a waiting list for 1-2-1 lessons; If you would like to add your name to the list, please complete an enrolment form which can be found on our website www.bostonleisurecentre.co.uk/lessons or ask for a form at reception. We will contact you when a space becomes available and offer you a block of six weeks – 25-minute lesson every week at the same time. We will also require an enrolment form for the person having the lessons and will issue a user membership card – all the details will be held on our secure database. You will need this membership card with you every time you book your next lesson. Lost cards are replaced at a cost of £3 per card. Cancellation policy for 1-2-1 lessons Survive and Save Rookie Lifeguard Club Our Rookie Lifeguard Club is aimed at those eight years and over who are interested in lifeguarding and lifesaving. Working through the Royal Lifeguard Saving Society (RLSS) Rookie Syllabus you will learn all the skills of a lifeguard and how to stay safe in and around water. Learn first-aid skills and teamwork in this fun session. Sundays 10.15am – 11.45am Four weeks Five weeks Six weeks Seven weeks Eight weeks £25.00 £31.25 £37.50 £43.75 £50.00 Survive and Save programme is the lifesaving awards programme for teens and adults (12 years+). The programme is a progression from the RLSS rookie lifeguard. The awards are challenging but fun to complete and they are arranged into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels to ensure that you continue to develop your lifesaving skills as you progress through the awards. The awards teach lifesaving rescue, self-rescue, survival, and lifesaving sport skills, and also develop swimming ability and fitness. Any lessons cancelled after this time cannot have their payment transferred. £16 per lesson is payable one week in advance. 7 Swimming lesson groups Parent and child lessons A half-hour session of exercise and play in the water with a qualified instructor will give your child the opportunity to gain water confidence, and prepare for swimming lessons. Sessions are held every Tuesday during school term time: Babies (6mths+) 10am to 10.30am Toddlers (up to 4yrs) 10.30am to 11am Children must be accompanied by an adult on a 1-2-1 basis. Babies and children not potty trained must wear a swim nappy. These are available to buy from reception. £5 per session An enrolment form is not required for these lessons – simply turn up! Ducklings Duckling awards 1&2 Takes place in the leisure pool small teaching pool. The main aim is build confidence and movement in the water. 1. 2. Enter the water safely from a sitting position; Kicking on front using one float (face in) and travel all the way across the baby pool; 3. 4. 5. 6. Jump into water from the pool side (at 1.5m) and submerge; 2. Submerge under the water and push and glide on front, maintaining a streamlined position; 3. Submerge under the water and push and glide on back, maintaining a streamlined position; 4. Hold a mushroom floating position for a minimum of 10 seconds; 5. Demonstrate three floating positions; 6. Pick object off the bottom of the pool (second lane); 7. Swim 20 metres doing backstroke; 8. Swim 10 metres front crawl and turn on side to breath; 9. Swim on the front, tuck to rotate around the horizontal axis and swim back on the back (swim on front, tuck up knees and transition onto back without touching floor); 10. Demonstrate a log roll; 11. Show breaststroke kick action on back; 12. Jump into water of at least full reach depth and tread water for thirty seconds followed by a 25 metre swim; 2. Mushroom float for 10 seconds; 3. Perform a forward somersault using a push and glide if necessary; 4. Perform a handstand on the bottom of the pool for 3 seconds; 5. Swim back crawl for 50 metres showing good technique; 6. Swim front crawl for 25 metres showing good technique – breathing every three strokes; 7. Demonstrate dolphin kick for 10 metres; 8. Swim Breaststroke action for 10 metres 9. Swim 10 metres Butterfly action; 10. Sculling head first 10 metres return feet first; 11. Swim 5 metres under water and pick up a brick off the bottom of the pool. Dolphins Stage 6 Lessons take place in the leisure pool lanes. 1. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Perform a head-first dive into water of at least full reach depth and swim 25 metres of front crawl; Perform a backward somersault; using a push and glide if necessary Perform a handstand and hold for three seconds; Swim one length of front crawl , finishing with a forward somersault into the pool side and push and glide away on the back; Tread water for 40 seconds followed by a 25-metre swim – this includes passing through a submerged hoop; Perform a surface dive in the water of at least full reach depth, followed by an underwater swim of a least 5 metre; Swim 25 metres breaststroke; Swim 15 metres butterfly; Swim 50 metres in ninety seconds – 25 metres front crawl and 25 metres back crawl Sharks Achieving; 100m, 200m 400+ bronze challenge, Stage 7 1. Swim 10 metres surface dive and swim five metres underwater through hoops; 2. Tread water for three minutes; 3. 15 metres sculling head first and return feet first; 4. Swim 100 metres front crawl and 300 metres backstroke continuous. 5. Swim 25 metres butterfly; 6. Swim 100 metres – completing 25 metres backstroke, 25 metres breaststroke and 50 metres front crawl; 7. Tread water for one minute followed by 10 metres head first sculling, then a back somersault and returning feet first, then a forward somersault and surface dive passing through sunken hoop. Due to the standard you have reached, your swimming lesson is now 45 minutes in duration. Also due to this standard, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) require you to be registered with them for insurance purposes (at no additional cost to you). Please can you complete the registration form and hand to your swimming teacher. As a Shark you must swim a minimum of once a week. You may also swim on the other sessions at no extra cost.
