Durandus - Universität zu Köln

International Workshop
at the University of Cologne
Among early 14th-century commentaries on the
Sentences of Peter Lombard, that of the Dominican theologian Durandus of St. Pourçain occupies
a special place, not only because of its originality,
but also because of its potential to advance medieval philosophical research. This commentary, which
exists in three versions, sheds light on philosophical
and theological debates in the context of the medieval university, the studia of the religious Orders and
the papal court at the beginning of the 14th century.
In these debates, the Sentences of Peter Lombard
were the focus of philosophical and theological contention. At the same time, Durandus’ commentary
proves to be an important document for the evaluation of discussions of the Dominican Order in the first
quarter of the 14th century, particularly with respect
to the teachings of Thomas Aquinas. Indeed, this
text became the starting point for one of the most
heated intellectual controversies of the Late Middle Ages, and the basis for a censorship process
against its author.
The Durandus Editing Project prepares critical editions of the first two versions (A and B) of Durandus’ commentary on the Sentences, both of which
probably originated from Durandus’ lectures on the
Sentences in Paris (1308-10). Both versions appear
to be rooted in a single manuscript by Durandus in
which A and B represent different phases of revision
that have been made. In this respect, the joint editing
of both redactions will contribute to the “history of
origins” of this commentary. As a result, this edition
of Durandus will also close a gap in the exploration
of the early 14th century, which was noted by Joseph
Koch in a groundbreaking study more than eighty
years ago.
