Starfish University Winter 2017
Letter From the President
Dear Friend of Starfish,
All of us at Starfish are very excited
to present you and other parents,
grandparents, and caregivers in
our community with this Starfish
University catalogue of educational and
enrichment opportunities.
This catalogue results from lots of hard
work by staff and, more importantly,
Starfish parents who are determined
to make our programs and services
more user-friendly and expand them to
better meet your needs.
Over two years ago, Starfish took a
hard look at our services for adults
- mostly the parents of children in our programs. We realized that it’s
difficult for many parents, with busy schedules and lots of demands in life, to keep
track of all the opportunities available to them at Starfish and other community
partners. Daily flyers, emails, and phone calls were confusing to many parents.
From that understanding, we created a framework, now called Starfish University, to
organize our resources for parents in a way that makes sense for YOU - not us!
Starfish parents told us that the idea of Starfish University is welcoming and
empowering. And, the university framework is perfect to reflect our campus (service
sites all over Wayne County), our student government (EPIC Parent Leadership Team),
our financial aid office (Starfish Community Finance Center), and our extracurricular
programs (Zumba, family movie nights, etc.). We hope you will look for “majors” that
help you move toward your personal and professional goals.
Two centerpieces of Starfish University – year one – our Parent Conference last April
and our quarterly catalogue.
We welcome your feedback - good and bad - about Starfish University. Please contact
our Office of Student Affairs anytime!
We are so excited to offer our third semester with the hope that you find joy and
success in your most important life role - PARENT!
Sincerely,
Ann Kalass
Starfish Chief Executive Officer
(aka, Starfish University President)

Yes! You will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of each session. A
graduation celebration for those pursuing several sessions will be held at the end of
each semester.
How can I use what I’ve learned at Starfish University?
That’s entirely up to you! Whether you pursued professional courses or creative
enrichment sessions, you can put your new skills and talents to use anywhere. If you
