LEARNING OUTCOMES
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The learner will:
The learner can:
1. Understand protons, neutrons and
electrons in terms of their relative charges
and masses.
1.1 Explain the difference between protons,
neutrons and electrons and explain the
distribution of mass and charges within an
atom.
2. Understand the distribution of protons,
neutrons and electrons in an atom given its
Atomic number and Mass number,
including some isotopes.
2.1 Explain the numbers of protons and
neutrons in atomic nuclei and electron
numbers in atoms and ions.
2.2 Explain the differences between isotopes
based on the different numbers of neutrons
present.
3. Understand the number and relative
energies of the s, p and d orbitals for the
principal quantum numbers and know the
shapes of s, p and d orbitals.
3.1 Explain the number of relative energies of
the s, p, and d orbitals for the principal
quantum numbers and describe the
shapes of s, p and d orbitals.
4. Understand how ionisation energies of
elements relate to reactivity.
4.1 Explain the term first ionisation energy of
an element and recognise the electronic
configurations of elements from
successive ionisation data.
5. Understand the position of elements within
the periodic table from ionisation energy
data.
5.1 Explain the successive ionisation data of
an element with specific reference to the
position of the element in the periodic
table.

GRADING INFORMATION
The table below gives details of the agreed grading descriptors that apply to this unit.
These must be applied whenever the unit is delivered as part of a QAA-recognised Access
to HE Diploma.
Where the unit is assessed through more than one assignment, centres need not apply all
of the descriptors to each assignment. However, they must ensure that all of the identified
descriptors are employed within the overall assessment regime for the unit.
The grading criteria that apply to this unit are indicated in the table below:
1. Understanding of the subject
2. Application of knowledge
3. Application of skills
4. Use of information
5. Communication and presentation
6. Autonomy/independence
7. Quality
