Example of a Circumstance
War or violent civil unrest where access to
facilities was made difficult or affected presence
of mind.
Hospital admission at relevant time/period
Debilitating condition which made it difficult to
submit an application, e.g. stroke and after
effects.
Circumstances that affected the student’s
‘presence of mind’ e.g. depression, mental health
illness, acute stress or anxiety.
Bereavement of close family member, partner,
close friend (which is accepted as having effect
on presence of mind).
Appropriate Evidence
Media reports of the disruption, a letter from an
authority depending on the nature of the
incidence confirming its nature and severity;
evidence of flight cancellations, evidence of local
conditions (e.g. travel web pages)
Hospital or Doctor’s letters / records / statements

Evidence from counsellors, the University’s
Wellbeing Service may provide evidence for
students received ongoing support but not for
‘drop in’ appointments.
