LASPO 2012 introduced the Alcohol Abstinence Monitoring Requirement (AAMR), which is a new sentencing option to tackle the significant problem of alcohol-related offending in London. An order containing an AAMR is not to be used on: This innovative pilot will test the requirement and will be the first time compulsory sobriety is enforced in the UK. The AAMR is an additional tool that will support you in sentencing nondependent drinkers. This is a ground-breaking project and never before has this happened in the UK. It is historic in many ways. If successful it may revolutionise the manner in which you approach the punitive sentencing elements of alcohol-related offending. The pilot, which will take place in Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark and Sutton, is the first mandatory sobriety scheme anywhere in the UK and aims to reduce alcohol-related reoffending in the area. • Those dependent on the use of alcohol • Those who commit domestic violence-related offences. USING AAMR Police Officers Please highlight that alcohol was a contributing factor in the offence. Magistrates Where the offence is alcohol-related, you may ask the Probation Officer to consider AAMR the in the pre-sentence report. Probation Officers Assess eligibility using AUDIT Tool and if suitable recommend an AAMR in the pre-sentence report. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE AAMR? An order containing AAMR is aimed at a specific cohort of offenders: • those convicted of alcohol-related offences stemming from the night-time economy For more information on the Compulsory Sobriety Pilot visit: www.london.gov.uk/mopac/sobrietypilot • repeat drink-driving offenders or email: • those convicted of alcohol-related violence offences or where alcohol was a significant factor in the offence.
