D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S
Kenneth Lonergan has a terrific ear for the rhythms of contemporary speech. His
dialogue is not only consistently smart, gritty, funny, engaging and honest, but there
is also a true musicality. Much like a good jazz quartet, LOBBY HERO is a challenging
ensemble piece for four astute players.
It’s no secret that LOBBY HERO is one of my favorite plays. I really love the issues it
explores; I love the complexity of the characters; I love the frankness of the humor. (I even
love the title!)
And it’s hard to label this play. It defies easy description in its tone and genre. It’s laughout-loud funny, it’s quirkily romantic and it has amazing dramatic power. Above all, it’s a
wonderful little morality play. Mr. Lonergan presents us with big, serious dilemmas and
asks us how we would solve them.
Essentially, this is a play about a couple of misfits searching for their place in a cold,
confusing world and desperately looking for a role model to help lead the way. Come to
think of it, aren’t we all?
