SPECIAL THANKS Tess Benser, Anne Marie Cammarato, Ronnie Graham , Mary Hough, Logan Peaslee, Lisa Schlenker and the Skylight Music Theatre prop department D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Kenneth Lonergan has a terrific ear for the rhythms of contemporary speech. His dialogue is not only consistently smart, gritty, funny, engaging and honest, but there is also a true musicality. Much like a good jazz quartet, LOBBY HERO is a challenging ensemble piece for four astute players. It’s no secret that LOBBY HERO is one of my favorite plays. I really love the issues it explores; I love the complexity of the characters; I love the frankness of the humor. (I even love the title!) And it’s hard to label this play. It defies easy description in its tone and genre. It’s laughout-loud funny, it’s quirkily romantic and it has amazing dramatic power. Above all, it’s a wonderful little morality play. Mr. Lonergan presents us with big, serious dilemmas and asks us how we would solve them. Essentially, this is a play about a couple of misfits searching for their place in a cold, confusing world and desperately looking for a role model to help lead the way. Come to think of it, aren’t we all? ~ C. Michael Wright Lobby Hero 3 BIOGR APHIES KENNETH LONERGAN (Playwright) Kenneth Lonergan is a critically acclaimed writer for both stage and film, whose earliest theatrical success was the 1996 play THIS IS OUR YOUTH, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Play. His other plays include THE WAVERLY GALLERY (a Pulitzer Prize runnerup in 2001) and LOBBY HERO, for which he was nominated for another Drama Desk Award for Best Play as well as an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play, an Olivier Award for Best Play, and the John Gassner Playwrighting Award. He co-wrote the film Gangs of New York, which received a Writers Guild of America and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and his film You Can Count on Me, which he wrote and directed, was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and Academy Award for Best Screenplay. You Can Count on Me also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for 4 Milwaukee Chamber Theatre Drama and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Lonergan’s most recent film Manchester by the Sea, entering limited release this fall, has already garnered him a Hollywood Screenwriter Award for his screenplay and nominations for multiple Gotham Awards.
