Subject: District Office Security Awareness
To:
This is a message from the House Sergeant at Arms.
During the upcoming District Work period, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you
of the significance of maintaining an enhanced security awareness in your District. This is
important if your District Office becomes a potential demonstration site. It is especially critical
to note that if your home address and phone number are publicly available, you should remain
particularly alert regarding your surroundings.
If you are scheduled to attend a public forum such as a town hall meeting, rally, or any other
public event, your Law Enforcement Coordinator (LEC) should contact the proper law
enforcement authority to coordinate any necessary police assistance at the event. I also
encourage your LEC to notify my office as well. I highly recommend that your LEC renew and
validate contacts with the law enforcement resources in your District and, if appropriate,
provide them with a copy of your Member’s schedule for situational awareness. These contacts
may include federal, state, and local police, and/or your county sheriff.
As you spend time in your District, I strongly encourage you and your staff to take this time to
review your District Office security protocols. The Law Enforcement Coordinator Resource
Center on the Sergeant at Arms website on HouseNet http://saa.house.gov/members/information-for-lecs.shtml - contains the Law Enforcement
Coordinator Handbook and the U.S. Capitol Police Guide to Security Awareness. We will also be
mailing hard copies of the LEC Handbook out to the District Offices this week.
The U.S. Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms maintain a constant watch in conjunction with
federal, state, and local counterparts for any indications of unlawful activities directed at
Members of Congress, as well as any terrorist-related threats to the United States. If you have
specific concerns regarding Member travel or other events, please contact the USCP Threat
Assessment Section at 202-224-1495 or the Sergeant at Arms at 202-225-1000. We will provide
proper assistance and coordinate with the appropriate law enforcement counterparts across
the country.
