M committee has scheduled
some exciting events for the fall.
Wednesday, September 10
Tyrone Perkins will be performing
with his band to entertain us in
the 3rd floor restaurant as part of
the campaign to "Help Heal
Through Music." Many of you
know Tyrone as one of our
personal trainers, but did you
know he is also a very talented
song and dance man? Make
your dinner reservation to hear
Tyrone singing many popular
standards from 7-8:30 p.m. Later
in the month is member Herman
Jordan's birthday party on
September 19th, which
traditionally attracts a full house.
Get out your best white outfit
for our "White Ball" coming in
October. Jim Bisch is wearing
white trousers he describes as
"classic", Richard Rinejohn is
wearing new tennis shoes with
his white ensemble. Carole Barlin
says she has a fabulous white
gown and hopes to win the Best
Dressed prize but Carol Simonoff
says she does not have a
chance to beat out her designer
white pantsuit. There are prizes
for the Best Dressed couple,
female, male, and most creative
outfits and tuxedos are
acceptable.
Club Council President Don
Mantarro is arranging for great
prizes for the Halloween party.

Dear Homeowners and Members,
y last message in the August issue of Marina Lifestyle talked about
positive improvements, many of which are in the works. Contracts for
repairing and renovating the pool areas and tennis courts are being
negotiated. Time Warner Cable is in the process of upgrading TVs in the public
areas, fabrics are being selected for seating in the City Café, our attorney’s are
working on necessary by law changes, a colorful brochure is in the works to
attract new members to defray expenses, the social committee is busy planning
activities in the Fall, and Seabreeze is in the process of replacing the aerobics
floor.
On a more serious note, the power outage at the beginning of August in the
Center Towers North and South awakened me to the possibility of what could
happen if we had a major earthquake as a result of which we could lose
electricity and water for an extended period of time. As individuals, we should
each prepare for this eventuality with flashlights, batteries, battery powered
lanterns, food, water, and cell phone chargers that aren’t dependent on power –
I just ordered one from Amazon.
Management has assured me that Property Services (Security), will have a
guard in each parking structure to guide people to the staircases during any loss
of electricity. Additionally, our Engineering Department will be directed to keep
emergency lighting on in the garages and hallways throughout the evenings for
an extended period of time. An emergency response guide for building
occupants will be distributed within the next month to all units.
That emergency guide references a floor warden or building representative in
the case of emergencies and it would be in everyone’s interest for us to have
volunteers acting as either a floor captain or a building warden to help others
during emergencies. Naturally we will set up trainings at convenient times so that
these designated people will know what to do in an emergency. I am
volunteering to be one of them and would appreciate hearing from others who
may be interested. To get more information or to sign up, email us at

n July 12th
we had
our 2nd
Women's A-B
Potluck with 16
ladies each
forming a doubles
team of one Aplayer and one Bplayer. It was a
round robin format
with rotating
teams so that both
levels got to enjoy
a different
opponent and a
different partner in
each round. The
women brought
food, wine, drinks,
and desserts for
everyone to enjoy
after the matches
were complete. This event was
hosted by our very own Georgie
Dinham. In the A-division,
Jacquie Stultz wound up
winning the most games and in
Woman’s Potluck
O
the B-division, Diane Nathan secured
the most games. However, the main
focus was sportsmanship/socializing
and in these areas all the ladies
were winners!
Gene's Tip of the Month
“Practice Pressure Makes Perfect”
any people
practice their
serves (hopefully)
to make the stroke better,
and that works. As I said
earlier in the year, if you
can practice your serve 2-3
times per week, then you
can see improvement over
time. However, the other
problem I frequently hear is, "My
serve has been great in practice,
I'm nailing it! But, whenever I go
to play a match, I tighten up and
it's good-bye good serve, hello
pusher serve." I makes me sad to
hear that people cannot enjoy
their new toy, a better serve,
M
4
because they get so
tensed up in a match.
There is a way to
duplicate the pressure of
a match when practicing
your serve by yourself. It's
a game you play against
an amazing player
named Mr. Nobody.
Mr. Nobody is tough, but fair.
When you play Mr. Nobody, you
serve every point. If you get
your first serve in, you win the
point and Mr. Nobody loses the
point, every time. If you miss
your first serve, but get your
second serve in, Mr. Nobody wins
the point and you lose the point.

If you miss both serves, you lose
the game. Play sets. First try to
win a set (regular scoring)
against Mr. Nobody.
If you do that, then make the
game a little more difficult by
requiring that you hit your first
serve harder. You can do this by
saying, that the second bounce
must be past the baseline or it
does not qualify as a first serve,
so I either do it over or it's a fault
and I'm on to the second serve.
If you want to make both serves
stronger, then put requirements
on your second serve as well: It
must also go over the baseline before
the second bounce or it must have
slice on it. Each time, you can add
things to make the game harder, while
under the pressure of trying to beat Mr.
Nobody in a set or three. There are
other ways to modify the basic format
if the harshness of losing games for
double faults is too much at first, but
eventually, you should make every
effort to play the game as laid out
here to create the pressure of a real
match.
If you are able to conquer Mr.
Nobody 6-0, 6-0, week after week,
then you should be on your way to
having a match ready serve that is
immune, or at least less susceptible to
the whims of match nerves!
