March 2009 “. . .to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the L ORD for the display of his splendor” (Isaiah 61:3 NIV). This is the beautiful word picture we have for the Rafiki Training Village Ethiopia, and one we were privileged to share at the dedication on February 23, 2009. His Excellency Girma Wolde-Giorgis, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, joined us as the keynote speaker and helped plant an “oak” tree as a visual symbol of our goal for the orphans of Ethiopia—to be a planting of the LORD for the display of His splendor. We thank all of you for your prayers and support for these three-and-a-half years that have us on the verge of receiving our first orphans. We look forward to future newsletters that will focus on changed lives and the grace of God. the power stayed off more than a day, we went to the local power company to see if we could find out more about the problem. The problem was big and was at the main power plant. We had to look to God’s grace to carry us for six days without power. Power was one thing, but the final three days without water had everyone a bit testy. The good news was and is that His grace is sufficient and His love does endure forever. Sing praise, sing praise! Carry On We sang a song at dedication called “Forever,” based on Psalm 136. The last verse has the line “And by the grace of God we will carry on, His love endures forever.” We are experiencing both. Three days after the dedication and two days after nine folks from the Home Office flew to the Rwanda Village dedication, the power went out in our Village. That is not unusual and we (Lori and Ken) kept plans to celebrate our wedding anniversary. When Our Own Oaks One of our greatest joys at the dedication was our kids getting to share in the celebration. Katy presented the President with flowers upon his arrival. Matt was our dedicated photographer; Josh helped during the program. All were greeted by the Prayer Requests Speaking of prayer, the following are ways you can be praying specifically for our family and our ministry: • Pray for wisdom as we hire mothers, kitchen staff, and a teacher and then begin training. • Pray for the final paperwork to be approved quickly so that we can begin to receiving orphans. • Pray for God to continue to provide all the financial support Rafiki needs to fulfill its mission. All ten countries have dedicated their Villages and are at various stages of operation. Stable funding during these unstable times is needed to insure Rafiki continues to fulfill its mission. President as he left. We can’t thank you enough for all your prayers for our children and the results we are seeing in their lives. Katy and Josh love school and revel in all the extra-curricular activities and their network of friends. Matt loves home school and is doing wonderfully. All are flourishing as plantings of the Lord and are displaying more and more of God’s splendor. We are grateful for the privilege of tending to the growth of these “oaks” and covet your prayers for wisdom. • Daily safety, protection, and good health; particularly for the kids traveling to school each day and the many trips we make to Addis for school events and meetings with government officials.
