It is the department’s desire that each customer be satisfied with the recreational activities in which they participate. If a customer is not satisfied, corrective efforts will be made. Each specific request or inquiry is reviewed by staff for its own individual circumstances and merit. If necessary, we can arrange for one of the following to occur (full or pro-rated): 1) repeat the activity at no charge, 2) receive credit that can be applied to any other activity at no charge, 3) receive a refund. Requests for refunds and transfers for departmental programs may be subject to a $5 transfer and $7 refund administrative processing charge. Request for refunds must be made within two weeks following a particular program. The Parks & Recreation Department Office must be notified by the end of the following business day in order to request a refund or transfer of ball field rentals that are rained out. If a program is canceled or session dates and/or times are altered by the Parks & Recreation Department, we will be happy to process a full refund. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. for fishing from 9-11 a.m. The lake will be stocked with Catfish, Sunfish, and Blue Gill. This free event is sponsored by the Blue Springs Sunset and Lake Lotawana Optimist Clubs. KC Area Junior Bass Masters will host a casting contest with winners from each age division. Private Party Pool Parties Get exclusive use of the indoor or outdoor pool for a birthday party, scout group, or sports team. Both the indoor and outdoor pools are available for private evening rentals. The 50-meter outdoor pool is available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. The indoor pool is available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after 5:30 p.m. Participants can attend any or all classes offered in the weekly schedule for $5 per visit or you can purchase a 20-class Swimnastics Discount Card for $80 ($4 per class). The card can be used for the Swimnastics/Advanced Swimnastics/Therapeutic Swim classes held year-round. Swimnastics Swimnastics is an aerobics class in the water. It’s a great way to burn calories and tone muscles without the stress to joints that often results from jogging or dry-land aerobics. It is also beneficial to arthritis sufferers or senior adults. Ages 18-59 with disabilities must call 816-228-0271 for precertification. 3 On the day of your appointment, the OATS driver will come to your door and assist you in the vehicle. The City of Blue Springs offers transportation services for Blue Springs residents 60 years and older or adults with disabilities ages 18-59. The City has an agreement with OATS Transportation Services for medical and/or shopping trips within Blue Springs as well as door to door pick-up and return to Vesper Hall 50-Plus Community Center. The City’s Parks & Recreation Department manages the agreement with OATS, Inc. Door-to-door transportation to and from Blue Springs shopping locations, medical appointments, libraries, etc is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. FAQ’s Who’s eligible? To use this service, you must be a resident of Blue Springs, be 60 years of age or older, or be 18-59 and disabled. When is this Service available? Transportation is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Group rides to and from Vesper Hall are available Monday through Friday. Pick-ups are between 8-9 a.m. Take home time is between noon and 1:30 p.m. Can I go anywhere within Blue Springs? Yes. Location is not restricted as long as it is within the City limits. Popular destinations are grocery stores, super centers, beauty shops and doctors appointments. Why is there a $3 co-pay? The actual hourly cost of this service averages $27 per hour. Your co-pay offsets the cost but does not pay in full the cost of the service. The City of Blue Springs makes up the difference. This service is also subsidized by Mid-America Regional Council’s Division on Aging. Is the bus wheel chair accessible? Yes. The bus can accommodate up to two wheel chairs and nine other passengers. How far in advance do I have to make my appointment? Reservations are first-come, first-served. You must call at least one day in advance. Contact Parks & Recreation for a listing of adoption descriptions. Each is specific and designed to fit both the adopter and the department’s best interests. From that, an “Adoption Agreement” will be developed. Dedicate A Tree Program The Parks & Recreation Department offers a “Dedicate A Tree Program” that allows individuals or group to purchase a tree/plaque from a preferred tree list and “dedicate” that tree in honor of an individual or group. The tree/plaque can be placed at their favorite Blue Springs park site. A 7”x 10” plaque will be installed at the base of the tree along with a personalized “Dedicate A Tree” certificate. The price per tree/plaque is $300. Arbor Day Celebration A special day is set aside each year nationally, dedicated to planting trees and acknowledging the importance of trees. The first Arbor Day took place in 1884 in Nebraska. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although dates may vary. The 2013 Arbor Day Celebration for Blue Springs will take place on Thursday, April 25th, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall. There will be extensive information at a Tree Care/Pruning Information Booth. Parks Department Staff will give handson demonstrations and answer questions concerning the proper selection, planting and pruning techniques for trees. Help us celebrate the importance of our urban forest. “Tree City USA” Celebrating 23 Years For its urban forestry efforts, the City of Blue Springs has been a proud recipient of the annual “Tree City USA” Award since 1990. Established by the National Arbor Day Foundation, this honor recognizes select communities for their demonstrated support of municipal tree betterment programs and projects. To qualify for this distinction, the City has to establish and maintain a municipal Tree Commission, oversee a community tree ordinance, support a Tree Management Program (with a minimum of $2 spent towards trees per resident), and sponsor an annual Arbor Day event. Park Improvements Updates • • • • • • • • The Community Garden has had 12” of new, organic composted soil to provide better growing conditions and water retention. A new concrete bridge over the trail at Ward Park allowing trail users and maintenance vehicles complete access to all areas of the park was installed. The Veterans Way Memorial was constructed over the winter months at Pink Hill Park and was dedicated on April 2. This memorial is dedicated to all veterans. The Adams Dairy Parkway and I-70 interchanges received a major facelift including all new landscaping in the four inner/outer quadrants of the interchange, newly repaired fountains and new LED lighting under the bridge. A new algae controller was installed at the Dog Park to help alleviate the algae growth from the hot, dry weather conditions last summer. New fencing has been added to the pond and new pedestrian access was added to the entire pond area. The dugouts at Hidden Valley Baseball and Softball were renovated with new metal roofs to complete the renovation project at the park. New playground and pergola has been installed at Pink Hill Park Shelter #3 including new seating, waste receptacles, shade structures and play area for all abilities and accessibility. Coming Soon! Look for two more Pickleball courts at Rotary Park. Pink Hill Park Recycling Center The recycling center is located on the north end of the park near the shop building. The center accepts common recyclables such as glass, plastic, aluminum, tin cans, paper and cardboard materials. Hours are Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during daylight savings time, midMarch through October. For a $20 fee, most shelters can be reserved for up to a 5-hour period. Larger shelters like the Hidden Valley, Young and Baumgardner Park are $40. Reservation fee for non-residents is $40 for regular shelters, and $80 for large shelters. Reservations can be made up to one year in advance for most shelters. Special Use Permits - A departmental policy requires approval for any special condition or use within the park system. This would include the use of an inflatable, a petting zoo, live or recorded music, tents, etc. Special use permits must be requested at least fourteen calendar days prior to the event. Adams Pointe Golf Club House With over 100 windows, a 30-foot skylight tower, and a spacious outdoor patio, the natural beauty and picturesque views are brought indoors at Adams Pointe Golf Club. The tournament and banquet room is the perfect locale for your next company outing, wedding reception, party, or special event. The room hosts scenic seating for up to 175 guests. Vesper Hall Community Center Great for weddings and special events, a gazebo is located in Rotary Park at Railroad Lake. This 22-foot, scenic facility overlooking a lake is available to Blue Springs residents for a $20 fee; non-residents $40. The community center is open and available for group rental purposes and seats up to 300 guests, banquet style. It is excellent for weddings, receptions, banquets, reunions, or club meetings. This 14,000 square foot, premiere facility is located at 400 NW Vesper, adjacent to Rotary Park at Railroad Lake. Rental packages are available for the large multi-purpose room, a smaller meeting room, or entire building which includes a full-service kitchen. Recreation “Picnic Kits” Blue Springs Community Garden Gazebo “Picnic Kits” are available that include a variety of items to make any picnic a success. The fee for this service is $18 per kit when a City park shelter has been reserved, or $29.50 if no shelter is reserved. A $25 refundable deposit is required. A limited number of kits are available on a first-come, firstserved basis. Bike Locker Rentals Eighteen enclosed and lockable bike lockers are located in three area Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) commuter parking lots. Lockers are located at I-70 & Woods Chapel Road, White Oak Shopping Center, and North 7 Highway at Country Club Drive. Locker fees are $40 a year. There are 38 designated garden plots of which 34 are 10’x10’ and 4 raised plots which are 5’x12’. The cost of each plot is $50 per growing season, March 16 through October 31. Each plot will be tilled by the Parks & Recreation Department prior to each growing season and free water is available for gardeners to use. Located at the site will be five demonstration garden plots by the Kansas City Area Master Gardeners. The Master Gardeners will also offer free literature, demonstrations and classes during the growing season.
