A NEWSLETTER FROM WOODHEY HIGH SCHOOL
December 2010
Dear Parents/Carers
At the end of another extremely busy and productive Autumn Term, I want to thank
you on behalf of all the pupils and staff at Woodhey for the exceptional support you
have offered in so many ways this year. It is, as always, much appreciated. Our
academic results this year were excellent - the best the school has ever achieved.
Thanks for your support and encouragement in helping your sons/daughters to
achieve and in many cases exceed their targets.
I always reflect at this time of year on the marvellous charitable deeds of our youngsters. This year has been especially productive with several thousand pounds
raised for local, national and international charities. In a time of growing materialism and commercialism it is heartening to see so many young people genuinely
caring for the well being of others less fortunate than themselves.
We always try to emphasise the importance of positive relationships through kindness, understanding and courtesy. These qualities are particularly relevant over the
Christmas period when we hope all our pupils will show an act of kindness to someone in the local community.
May I take this opportunity to wish you, your family and your friends a happy, restful
Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
M Braidley, Headteacher
Christmas Dinner
Christmas dinner has gone wrong,
Gravy, lumpy,
Roasties, not crunchy,
Parsnips, soft
Can‘t Grandma cook it right this year?
Where‘s that so-called ‗Christmas cheer‘?
Baby‘s crying, just won‘t stop,
It‘s been sick, where‘s the mop?!
Fire alarm whirring and screaming,
Dad‘s forehead sweaty & gleaming,
Oh dear, the turkey‘s burnt!
I think there‘s a lesson to be learnt,
Christmas dinners cross the line,
M & S cooked meals will do just fine!

Adverse Weather Policy
In the event of a heavy snowfall every effort will be made to keep the school
open, but regard for the children‘s safety must be paramount.
Accordingly:
In the event of heavy snowfall during the school day, the situation will be carefully monitored by Senior Management personnel and the School Office.
We will gather information from Manchester Weather Centre, the Police and
local bus companies as to the state of the roads and predictions for the remainder of the day concerned. The school will respond to their advice.
In the event of school closure and a ‗staggered‘ evacuation, those children
most at risk, ( i.e. those with physical disability and those who live in outlying
areas) will be sent home first, provided they have access to their home or other
place of safety. Such children, before they leave, must indicate their destination if it is not their home.
After-school events, games, clubs, detention, choir, parents‘ evening etc. will
normally be postponed.
Where adverse weather is forecast, pupils should be suitably clothed and provided with sufficient money to cover bus fares.
In the event of heavy snowfall or adverse conditions overnight, please check
the school website regularly (www.woodhey.bury.sch.uk) and we will contact
the local radio stations (Tower FM and Key 103) to broadcast details concerning whether school will be open or closed.
B Roadnight, Deputy Headteacher
Polite Notice
Parents/Carers
We expect all of our pupils to come to school fully prepared by bringing with them the equipment
they need for their lessons. This is one of the many responsibilities they need to learn as they
grow through high school.
Please support us with this by encouraging them to take this responsibility and not deliver forgotten items during the school day.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Year 7 ‘Doodle’
Book Challenge
Since the beginning
of term, Year 7
have been set the
challenge of completing a ‘doodle’
book every half
term.
These are
long strips of paper
that are folded into
either four or eight
sections. Pupils are
then encouraged to
draw on them. Their drawings can be about anything and in any
style they choose. The purpose is to promote drawing as a fundamental activity that every human being does and to try and eliminate the ‘I can’t draw’ syndrome that a large majority of people frequently choose to say. Every doodle book that is completed is celebrated!
Pupils are encouraged to use the studio space to draw in on Monday
lunchtimes. If a pupil completes a ‘doodle’ book every half term they
will achieve a ‘Keep Drawing’ certificate for their progress files at
the end of the year. As many ‘doodle’ books as possible will be displayed in the end of year Art and Design exhibition in June.

Year 11 Art and Design reminder
Just a quick reminder to all year 11 Art and Design pupils that the
hand in date for all GCSE coursework is the 5 th January and the
GCSE externally set task will be issued 10 th January.
The studio space continues to be open to all upper school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes and early dinner passes
are available.

Manchester Art
Gallery Trip
At the very end of last term
year 10 visited Manchester Art
Gallery for a day. The morning
was spent in the temporary
exhibition called ‘Recorders’ by
the contemporary artist Rafael
Lozano-Hemmer. It was an
interactive exhibition
that
questioned the Big Brother society that we live in. The pupils
readily got involved and had a
go at everything. They then
completed some related drawings and later on investigated
the rest of the gallery. A good
day was had by all!

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows and
Eclipse Quiz – The Rematch
Following a previously hotly contested quiz where a group of four Yr8 girls
beat the staff by just one point the time had come for a rematch. Mr Nicholson, Miss Pierre and Mrs Collins were determined to show the girls who the
true champions really were! The two weeks before the quiz involved the
team of girls and the staff trying to psych each other out by randomly asking
each other some fiendishly difficult questions. On the day, twenty teams entered and the pressure was on. Could the girls keep their crown? Would
they be usurped by the staff? Or, as both teams were very worried about,
would they be put to shame by one of the other teams?
However, despite some outstanding competition, in third place were Ellen
Aston-Rawsthorn, Kelly Marno, Ana Marreiros and Susannah LivingstoneMuller, second place Mrs Collins, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Nicholson and Miss Pierre
and with a lead of eight points the team of Alex Fitton, Sarah Morris, Sarah
Palmer and Lizzie Topping held on to their crown. Well done to all who took
part - you were absolutely brilliant and especially the staff who were such
good sports!

SPANGLOVISION 2010
7 Calrows were crowned winners of Spanglovision 2010 after facing a tie
with 7 Kay. Calrows wowed the judges with their version of ‗Livin’ la Vida
Loca’ by Ricky Martin and made Mrs Edwards, their Spanish teacher, very
proud.
The afternoon was enjoyed by all of the year 7 forms who had each performed a Spanish song after weeks of preparation during their Spanish
lessons. 7 Ashton opened the show with ‗Nada fue un error’. 7 Hoyle
sang another Ricky Martin number ‗Maria‘ and Kay performed a rousing
football anthem ‗La Copa de la Vida’ taking us all back to the summer
when Spain won the World Cup. Other brilliant performances were given
by Grant who sang ‗La Bamba’, and Peel who sang a very difficult song
called ‗Puedes Contar Conmigo?‘

Woodhey Weather Club:
Mobile Phones
At weather club, with Mrs Hugo, we had
a guest speaker – Meteorologist Mr
Hugo, who came to talk to us about how
the weather is forecast and how to proceed with a career in the sciences.
Please be aware that any pupil
seen with their mobile phone out in
the school building during the hours
of school will have the phone confiscated. Phones can then be collected by the pupil at the end of
school on Friday or by their parent/
carer at any time.
We used the school weather station to
compare the past 2 months to average
readings.
In October, the total rainfall was 90.6
mm; this is 49mm below average, with
the most in one day occurring on the 1st
of the month.(22.8 mm).
The average temperature was 9.7° C
which is above average (9.4° C). The
coldest temperature was recorded on
the 25th (-2.2° C) and the warmest was
on the 10th 17.9 °C. The highest wind
gust was 27 mph recorded on the 11th
and 29th.
We had a cold November this year with
-7.6 °C recorded on the 28th. The average daily minimum for November was
3.2 °C which is extremely cold!
In November, the total rainfall was
103.6; this is 40mm below average, with
the most in one day occurring on the 1st
(22.8 mm).
The average temperature was 4.9° C
which is below average (6° C). The
highest wind gust was 39 mph recorded
on the 11th.
We have had a cold, snowy December
so far this year!
Weather club is every Wednesday
lunchtime in S8.
By Luke Taylor 7C, Thomas Wilkinson &
James Sugden 8P, and George Rollins 9G.
We appreciate that a mobile phone
has become a useful, and in some
cases vital, piece of modern equipment. We are also keen to embrace
any technology that enhances
learning. Currently however, mobile
phones can be a
distraction and as valuable items
are at risk of damage or theft.
Please note that:

We have clocks throughout
the school if pupils wish to
know the time;

Pupils should bring appropriate calculators for relevant
lessons;

Homework diaries are available for noting any diary
events;

In case of an emergency
pupils may ask a teacher/the
office if they need to make a
call out of school.
We therefore consider that there is
no need for any child to use their
phone during the school day.
Thank you for your support in this
matter.

Woodhey students win £3,000 worth of Apple equipment for
their school thanks to Equanet and Bolton & Bury EBP backed
competition
Bury, 18th November 2010 – Equanet and the Bolton & Bury Education Business Partnership today held a competition for the area‘s schools as part of National Enterprise Week,
15-21 November 2010.
The competition, named ―iDesign‖, encouraged students in Year 10 to design an application for the Apple i-phone. 26 schools in the Bury and Bolton area took part and put forward teams of four students. The winning team was from Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom, Bury.
The competition
lasted most of the
day and gave students the chance to
spend the day with
designers, IT experts
and business people
from Equanet with a
view to developing
their idea further.
This involved business planning, presentations and marketing. The winning
team received
£3,000 worth of Apple equipment for
Woodhey High
School plus an ipod
Touch for each
member of the winning team. Equanet
will also install the
equipment in the winning school.
Congratulations to two of our teams who reached the final and particularly to the winning
team - Flight 101 - of Daniel Shanks, Chris Baron. James Darnton and Sam Ernill. The
other team included George Rollins, Andrew Johnson, Michael Yeung and George HollasBrine
Thanks to Ms Moore who guided our two teams through the preparation stages and sup
ported them on the day.

Year 11 Football
The Year 11 boys have had a fantastic start to the season, winning 3 out of 3 league
games and their first round cup match against Derby. A 2-0 victory over local rivals Tottington got the team off to a good start. An early goal from Adam Nuttall got the ball
rolling and when Matt Boyle was awarded a penalty in the second half it was a case of
closing the game out. The lads then built on this and produced a convincing win over
Bury Church. An Adam Nuttall hat-trick was added to by Joe Dentith, leaving the final
score at 4-1 and the team having played 2, won 2. The defining moment however came
when we played Derby in a league and cup double. Previous games have been close
but unfortunately, in recent times, have gone the wrong way and so there was even
more pressure to beat them in our final encounter. Ben Richardson came close to opening the scoring, but could only watch as his effort hit the post and was cleared by a defender. Adam Nuttall and Jack Roberts on the other hand managed to find the net and
do enough to seal a victory. A fantastic individual performance from Niall West also
helped to produce a brilliant team effort and the all important win.
Hopefully the second half of the season will continue in the same fashion and the boys
can end on an all-time high. Look out for the final update in the summer bulletin.

Cross country
Well done to all our runners who took part in the annual Bury Schools Cross Country on
16th November at Heaton Park. We expected the usual rain and wind but we were
greeted with glorious sunshine instead. The whole team made a superb effort and we
had some fantastic individual performances. The following pupils managed to finish in
the top 15 for their age group.
Year 7: Jack Earing (7th), Omar Draper (8th) Year 8/9: Tom Coulson (13th) Jenny
Smalley (8th) Moira Davies (6th) Simone Keating (10th) Year 10/11 Adam Lowe (13th)
Tom Urquhart (10th) Niall West (5th) Briea Denney (3rd) Megan Davies (1st) Liv Smith
(7th) Beth Bolton (11th) Jenny Todd. All the above named pupils have been invited to
represent Bury in the Greater Manchester Schools Cross Country Competition on the
5th February. On the team front the year 7 boys finished second overall, the year 8/9
girls won, the year 10/11 boys finished third and the in the same age group the girls
managed to win overall. A big congratulations to everyone who took part and represented the school superbly well.
Hockey—Senior Girls Hockey
The girls have had a flawless season! They are the Bury League Champions and when it came to
the Bury Cup they were unstoppable. Every match just made them stronger, outwitting each team
as they strolled through to the semi-finals and still without allowing a goal or short corner to be
conceded they went through to the finals against Parrenthorn. It was the closest match of the season and it looked like they had met their match until the Woodhey survival tactics kicked in and our
girls became Champions winning 2-0.
FLAWLESS LADIES! WELL DONE!
Year 8 girls
The girls are on form, they have stormed ahead with their league games beating
Totty 4-0, Bury Church 2-0 and Broadoak 4-0! They did draw with Bury Grammar School 1-1 but they are stronger and fitter and ready to attack for the Cup!
Keep up the good work girls!

Woodhey Girls Under 13's Bury Winners.
Five Year eights and Three Year seven girls from Woodhey competed recently in the Bury 6 a-side tournament at Broadoak, on
the 23rd of November. The weather was cold but the girls played
with real fire against some good competition. The football they
played was a delight to watch, which was commented on by one
of the Bury Football team coaches. They have a really strong
team and we now wish them well as they now progress to play at
Oldham Athletic against teams from across Manchester.
Results:
Woodhey 2-0 Broadoak
Woodhey 0-0 Tottingham
Woodhey 4-0 Castlebrook
Woodhey 3-1 Fearns
Woodhey 2-0 Phillips
Woodhey 2-1 Derby B
Woodhey 7-0 Derby A

Well done to the Year 7 girls 5-a-side football team who beat Tottington 3-0 and made it through to the Bury Schools final against
St Monicas. After conceding 2 early goals, we started to have
more of the play and despite having more than a dozen fantastic
shots on goal, we lost 2-1. Not surprisingly we awarded the player
of the match for their team to their Goal Keeper. It was a valiant
effort from the girls and I know they will be keen to go for the
league trophy in March.
