Dear Collectors Welcome to our last Stamp Bulletin for 2007. It’s been a busy year with the Sydney Stamp Expo in June and regional stamp shows across Australia, and a full program of stamp issues covering a range of themes and celebrating Australian events. As we move on to the last stamp issues for this year we promote the activity of stamp collecting for children in Australia during October with Stamp Collecting Month. This year we commemorate the first 50 years of space exploration and the milestones reached. Space exploration continues to capture the imagination of children and to challenge the countries involved. The stamps in this issue remind us of just how far we have come in 50 years. © Copyright 2007 Australian Postal Corporation. All rights reserved. We continue a nostalgic series started with Driving through the Years with Caravanning through the Years, a stamp issue that looks at a favourite Australian holiday pastime. For years families have spent their summers hooking up a “van” to the back of the car and taking off for a long weekend or annual trip. Many of us fondly remember the eccentric and cramped caravans of yesterday when we look at today’s prestige models. We also celebrate 50 years of Australian Christmas stamps. The first Christmas stamp issue in Australia was to set the trend of issuing special Christmas stamps for cards and mail sent during the festive season. This stamp issue includes the “Surfing Santa” stamp. When it was released, some thought the stamp didn’t convey the traditional spirit of Christmas, while others thought it reflected the carefree attitude and lifestyle of Australians. Our last stamp issue gives a different offering to those wanting to spread a little Christmas cheer. Christmas Island Christmas has Santa among the palm trees and crabs as he organises the delivery of Christmas presents. These highly colourful stamps are beautifully illustrated by renowned Australian artist Lloyd Foye. Showcasing the stamps from this year’s program are the “Collections” – the 2007 Collection of Australian Stamps and the 2007 Australian Territories Collection. Both include the stories behind the stamp issues released through the year, and relative to each collection, and feature a full set of gummed stamps. Each year a special product is added to the Australian collection to complement the stamps; this year’s collection presents an exclusive Australian Botanic Gardens sheetlet. Don’t forget to look out for the new Impressions catalogue of gifts and collectables in November. This catalogue will include some impressive limited edition products that I’m sure will be in demand. At the time of writing this letter, we are planning the launch of the SAS stamp issue at a special function in Melbourne and we have produced a gold embossed SAS stamp sheetlet to form part of a special presentation to the dignatories attending. We will be producing only 2,000 of these sheetlets as part of a special product to be made available in Impressions (see page 17). I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of Australian philately and to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. *Save on the 2007 Collection of Australian Stamps by ordering before 27 December 2007. On 4 October 1957 the first man-made satellite orbited Earth and so began the “space race” for the USSR and the USA. Australia has played a supportive role in international space exploration and even added to the list of astronauts. Sputnik 1 weighed only 83 kilograms and circled the Earth every 98 minutes. It contained a battery, a radio transmitter and other instruments to measure conditions in space, such as temperature. The successful launch of Sputnik by the USSR represented a propaganda victory over the USA, which had planned to launch its own satellite – Vanguard. First Space Walk 1965 For several years the Soviets led space exploration. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space on 12 April 1961 and Valentina Tereshkova the first female cosmonaut in June 1963. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was the first person to step outside his spacecraft in orbit in 1965, beating American Ed White by only three months. Leonov had to bleed air from his ballooned spacesuit to squeeze back through the airlock of Voskhod 2 after the 20–minute space walk. First Moon Walk 1969 After Gagarin’s successful orbit of the Earth, President John F Kennedy responded by declaring that the USA would send a man to the Moon by the end of the decade. As the world watched on 21 July 1969, Neil Armstrong, one of the crew of Apollo 11, became the first person to set foot on the Moon and utter the immortal words, “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind”. Fellow astronauts on the Apollo mission were Buzz Aldrin in the Lunar Module, Eagle, and Michael Collins on board the orbiting Apollo. Voyager 1977 Two of the many space probes launched into our solar system have explored Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune, along with dozens of their moons. The Voyager 1 and 2 probes were launched by NASA in 1977. Voyager 1 remains the most distant human-made object in the cosmos and, now at the outer edge of our solar system, will soon will be hurtling through interstellar space. 4 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 289 | October–December 2007 www.auspost.com.au/stamps >> a full list of products and their mail order codes is included with this publication. 1542142 minisheet T h is e x c lu s iv e ly s iz d o u b le -c ommemo ed ra ti v e “H u b b le ” a v a il a b le s ta m p is o n ly e m b o s s e a s p a rt o f th e fo il d “S p a c e ” m in is h e e t! International Space Station 1998 The USSR was the first to place a space station, Salyut 1, in orbit in 1971. In 1984, US President Reagan proposed space station Freedom, which has now become the International Space Station (ISS) project. The cooperation of 16 countries will see the project completed around 2010. Two and three member crews have spent up to seven months on board the ISS, which is expected to accommodate up to seven astronauts on completion. Hubble Space Telescope 1990 The world’s largest space-based optical telescope, the “Hubble” orbits the Earth once every 97 minutes at an altitude of 600 kilometres. With the expected active life of the telescope to be around 20 years, Hubble is able to observe our solar system and the further reaches of space, including distant galaxies and nebulae. One of Hubble’s most famous images is the Hubble Deep Field, which views a tiny region of sky that has revealed about 3,000 galaxies, some as old as 10 billion years. The Hubble Space Telescope has helped astronomers estimate the age of the universe to be between 12 and 14 billion years. 1542220 maxicard set Individually numbered. Almost all of the television images covering the 1969 Apollo II mission came through the Honeysuckle Creek and Tidbinbilla tracking stations with assistance from the Parkes radio telescope. Andy Thomas – the First Australian–born Astronaut Australia’s involvement was also through the first (and only) Australian astronaut, Andy Thomas, who was born in Adelaide SA. While working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1992, Thomas joined the American Astronaut Corps. He went on to become an important member of several missions, including the first mission launched after the disastrous Columbia space mission in 2003. In the Beginning Historically, caravans have been used for many purposes throughout the world. As one source indicates, the etymology of “caravan” suggests it is a very old invention, but the term is also misleading, as what accounts for a caravan has changed through time. When “caravan” entered into English language in the 16th century, it represented a wheeled wagon to carry goods and/or people. So as a stagecoach of sorts, this is a recognisable forerunner to the modern caravan – a mobile place of accommodation. Tinkers, travelling salesmen, showmen and circus troupes have all used caravans for their own particular purposes. Similarly, industry has used caravans for mobile workstations and demonstration vehicles from around the mid-20th century, and by choice or circumstance people have found themselves using caravans as temporary or permanent homes. Despite these multiple uses, for most Australians caravans are intimately associated with holidaymaking. Caravanning in Australia Caravanning found a niche in Australia’s leisure industry in the 1920s. Although there was an embryonic caravan manufacturing industry in these early years, many keen individuals also built their own, a tradition that persisted well into the 1950s. 1553182 set of six s-adhesive booklets (10 x 50c each) 1553001 first day cover But caravanning was dependent not only on having a caravan. The uptake of the motorcar, the development of road networks and maps, the establishment of petrol pumps and the availablity of leisure time were crucial to the growing popularity of caravanning. The motorcar was adopted fairly rapidly in Australia, although it was mainly the middle classes that could afford to own one until national prosperity increased in the postwar years. In the early years the Pacific and Hume Highways were the two main routes in Australia, though they were nothing like they are today. When the real craze hit in the 1950s, the less-travelled roads were still fairly rudimentary. But the car offered freedom to holidaymakers, and packing up the caravan and heading to one of Australia’s east–coast beaches became a favourite holiday pursuit. 8 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 289 | October–December 2007 www.auspost.com.au/stamps For great caravanning tips, loads of useful information and destinations designed with a caravan in mind just visit www.welovethiscountry.com.au >> a full list of products and their mail order codes is included with this publication. Until the late 1950s caravan parks were uncommon off the main highways; holidaymakers would simply park their caravans on the roadside or in farmers’ paddocks. Through the 1960s the number of caravan parks increased and as their infrastructure and facilities evolved into what we know today, they changed caravanning from an impromptu experience to a more organised holiday taking place at the same caravan park each year. Caravanning Today Although still a popular and affordable holiday for families, “grey nomads” comprise the growth demographic of caravanners. Some grey nomads make regular short trips or head north for a seasonal escape to warmer climates, but it’s the journey right around Australia that’s said to capture the imagination of this new generation of caravanners. 1553184 prestige booklet Includes a grey nomads postcard 1553220 set of five maxicards TECHNICAL DETAILS Issue date................................16 October 2007 FDI withdrawal date................13 November 2007 Denominations........................Five x 50c Design.....................................Melinda Coombes, Coombes Whitechurch Design Product design.........................Jo Muré, Australia Post Design Studio Printer......................................SEP Sprint Paper (gummed)......................Tullis Russell (s-adhesive)......................B100 Printing process.......................Lithography Stamp size...............................37.5mm x 26mm Perforations.............................13.86 x 14.6 Sheet layout ...........................Module of 50/two panes of 25 Special feature........................Design in gutter National postmark...................Seymour VIC 3660 1553126 stamp pack October–December 2007 | no. 289 | stamp bulletin australia | 9 50 YEARS OF AUSTRALIAN CHRISTMAS STAMPS 1 NOVEMBER 2007 Australia Post has selected five classic Australian Christmas stamp designs to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this annual stamp issue. Each of these stamps expresses the artistic style, social mood and cultural values of its time. Together they invite us to relive Christmas memories of the past five decades. Christmas 1957 The first Australian Christmas stamp design was created by Note Printing artist Donald Cameron. In the 1950s, the Post Master General’s department responded to a call for a more public demonstration of spirituality by various religious communities. At the time it was felt the biblical Christmas story was best represented by a European image, and so the first Australian Christmas stamp used a figure of a small child kneeling from the 1776 painting The Infant Samuel by the English artist Sir Joshua Reynolds. Christmas 1977 The “Surfing Santa” stamp design by Roger Roberts was commissioned for the overseas Christmas mail, but was changed to the domestic stamp just prior to release. Although religious opinion had not found the image unacceptable as an overseas stamp, it was thought to be inappropriate as the general Christmas stamp. The majority of Australians liked the stamp, its design relevant to a time in which Australians felt confident and at ease with their identity. Christmas 1984 The origin of stained glass as a Christian art form dates back to the sixth century AD. The Madonna and Child stamp was designed by Ken Cato, with photography by Michael Laurie, using a detail from a stained glass window made in 1938 for St Bartholomew’s Church of England, Norwood, South Australia. Christmas 1990 Marg Towt’s design shifts the place of the Nativity from its traditional scene to the Australian bushland, depicting the baby Jesus surrounded by the native koala and kangaroo. This stamp was issued at the height of the bicentennial decade during which Australian historic subjects, flora, fauna and nostalgic Australiana were at the forefront of visual culture. Christmas 1996 The theme of the Virgin Mary and Child had been a strong one during the 1990s. After a period of economic recession in the late 1980s and the boom in information technology in the 1990s, a sense of both unease and anticipation marked the period moving towards the new millennium. The stamp was designed by Sophie Byass and illustrated by Vivienne Goodman. 10 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 289 | October–December 2007 www.auspost.com.au/stamps 1543155 aerogramme 45c...............Surfing Santa 1977 45c...............Bush Nativity 1990 45c...............Madonna & Child 1996 50c...............The Infant Samuel 1957 $1.10...........Stained Glass 1984 1543184 prestige booklet Sheetlet of 10 “Surfing Santa” self-adhesive stamps with screen and flexo varnish feature – our first! 1543122 “Surfing Santa” 1543142 self-adhesive minisheet Personalised Stamps™ These three new designs will be available for use with the Personalised Stamps™ service when you order on-line from 1 November 2007. www.personalisedstamps.com.au 1543220 maxicards TECHNICAL DETAILS Issue date................................1 November 2007 FDI withdrawal date................29 November 2007 Denominations........................Two x 45c (se-tenant), one x 45c, one x 50c, one x $1.10 Design.....................................Melinda Coombes, Coombes Whitechurch Design Product design.........................Trevor Marriott, Australia Post Design Studio Printer......................................SEP Sprint Paper (gummed)......................Tullis Russell (s-adhesive)......................B90/B100 (minisheet/sheetlets & booklets) Printing process.......................Lithography Pemara (Surfing Santa sheetlet) Stamp size...............................26mm x 37.5mm, 37.5mm x 26mm (50c) Minisheet size.........................147mm X 104mm Surfing Santa sheetlet size.....162mm X 148mm Perforations.............................14.6 X 18.86, 18.86 X 14.6 Sheet layout ...........................Two x 45c (se-tenant) in checkerboard Special feature........................High build screen varnish & flexo varnish effect National postmark...................Smithton (Christmas Hills) Tas 7330 1543126 stamp pack 1543001 first day cover October–December 2007 | no. 289 | stamp bulletin australia | 11 TALKING STAMPS STAMP TITLE WITH NOEL LEAHY ISSUE DATE Welcome to the final of a three–part series that looks at the Australian Stamp Issue Program. In this article we focus on the considerations that determine the program. In the previous Bulletin we looked at how the Australian Stamp Program has evolved over the last 10 to 15 years, and noted that a large part of the current program is very similar in theme and format to that of past years. The Australian Stamp Issue Program covers traditional areas such as anniversaries and events of significant or outstanding national and international interest, and Australian flora and fauna. In fact, you could say that the traditional Australian Stamp Program is alive and well! To these traditional stamp issues have been added special event stamps (Olympic Gold Medallists, Ashes Test Series) as well as Special Occasion Stamps. The reasons for these new additions to the program were explained in the last Talking Stamps article. Perhaps it would be best to categorise Australian stamps under the headings of Traditional, Special Occasions and Special Events. What do you think? Would this assist collectors? Feel free to write and let me know. Now to the subject of this column: how stamp formats are selected, along with the subsequent product range that belongs to each issue. Each Australian stamp issue has a standard range of products that we have come to expect. These are the stamp or sheetlet pack, first day cover and maxicard set. Where there is an appropriate coin available from the Royal Australian Mint or Perth Mint a Philatelic Numismatic Cover (PNC) is also added. From here on things get rather more complicated! The key questions we have to ask are many, and also somewhat dependent on each other. For example: •Do we need to offer the stamp for extensive postage use? If so, then a self-adhesive version may be required. •What self-adhesive products are required in the post office at this time? (Booklets of 10 or 20; rolls of 100 or 200 etc). •Does the design of the stamp issue lend itself to a special sheet formation? •Is the stamp theme of special significance or rich in interesting information? If it is, then a Prestige Booklet or other special product may be a logical inclusion. •Will the stamp issue appeal to the tourist market? If it does, then we may develop a postcard range. We have to make these decisions to ensure Australian postage requirements are met, as well as the other considerations that were outlined in the last Bulletin’s Talking Stamps article. When it comes to the stamps themselves, a theme will normally dictate the stamp format. For example, a stamp issue on “Coastlines” would most likely need a wide stamp format (landscape) to do it justice. This is not always possible, as the recent International stamp issue shows. (We wanted to include a $1.95 Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp for inclusion in the Personalised Stamps™ service, which doesn’t have a landscape format.) This required a different perspective on the bridge as far as the stamp design goes. (The stamp appears on page 15 of Stamp Bulletin 287. Take a look at 12 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 289 | October–December 2007 the layout of the stamp and you will see what I mean.) By presenting the stamp design in “portrait” format we were able to include the design and make it available for use with the Personalised Stamps™ service. The subject of stamp denominations and sheetlet configuration is also a major consideration for each stamp issue. Stamp denominations are primarily chosen to provide a reasonable range of different stamp designs of each denomination over a period of time. This can mean that in the case of International Stamps the small letter rates of $1.30 and $1.95 are updated with appropriate images that are able to act as “Australian Ambassadors”, and that if you are using these stamps to send a letter overseas you’ll most likely use a few different designs each year. This policy addresses complaints we receive with regard to people becoming bored with particular stamp images. When we look at traditional gummed stamp presentation there has been a significant decline in the need to produce sheets of 50 stamps over the years, as well as some of the higher denominations. This is relative to the introduction of self-adhesive stamp rolls and booklets, and postage labels now being used to send many of our parcels around Australia and overseas. I hope you have found this series of articles about the Australian Stamp Issue Program informative and useful. Talking Stamps will be back in 2008 with more information about Australian stamps, including a look at the research and design of Australian stamp issues from those involved in the process. www.auspost.com.au/stamps CHRISTMAS ISLAND CHRISTMAS 1 NOVEMBER 2007 The Christmas Island community comprises people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds.
