T
he 2016 deer hunting season has
come and gone, but this one will be
a memorable one for me because I
went hunting. This hasn’t been the first time I
have sat in a deer stand, but it is the first time
I did it by myself and got one. In the past, I sat
with my husband while he hunted. I enjoyed
watching the wildlife and the sunrise and
sunsets. To pass the time I would sleep, read
or color in my coloring book. This year, I went
with my dad the first time out just to get a feel
for the deer stand and the surroundings and
to get pointers. The second time out I went
by myself to the stand. The most exciting
thing happened. I was watching a deer at the
feeder and all a sudden he looked up, his eyes
got that headlight look and he started acting
real nervous. A deer’s tail is like a flag. It goes
up like a signal and then he started stomping
his feet. I looked the direction he was looking
and to my surprise out comes a bobcat. There
standing about 30 feet in front of me was
a bobcat just staring at me. I wanted to take
a picture of it with my phone, but he knew I
was there and if I moved he would run off. We
watched each other for a couple of minutes
and then he moved on. That left my heart
pumping. It took me a minute to settle down.
I now directed my attention to the deer. I just
knew he was going to run too, but he went
back to eating. I watched him a while trying
to decide whether I wanted to take a shot or
wait to see if something better would come in.
It was getting late and I had to do something
before the sun set. I made my decision, next
thing I knew I found that I got my first deer. O
my gosh, I was so excited I didn’t know what to
do next. I called my dad and could barely talk.
He couldn’t get there soon enough. We loaded
it up and started the next process. My husband
has been the one to supply the meat each year,
but this year I got to contribute as well, along
with making more memories.

Jarní pozdravy to All,
Following a relatively mild winter, spring is finally
here and with it comes an opportunity to clean
out that attic or garage, change those heating
and AC filters, install fresh batteries in smoke
alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, clean
out debris from rain gutters, cut tree limbs and
shrubs away from buildings and make any other
necessary repairs to give your home a pride
of ownership appearance. Statistically, well
maintained property is less susceptible to being
damaged than property that is neglected. Spring
storms have already begun, so make sure you
and your family have an emergency plan in place
just in case threatening weather approaches.
Included in this addition of our publication we
are pleased to provide the annual member/
policyholders report required under Chapter
911 of the Insurance Code. In the 2016 financial
report, you will find information reflecting
total premiums collected, incurred operating
expenses and claims paid to our members for
each covered peril within our policy provisions.
As a policyholder, you are also an owner of the
company which operates solely for the benefit
of its members. There are no shareholders and
by statute, ownership and control of a Texas
Farm Mutual is vested in you, our member/
policyholders.
Farm Mutual insurance companies are unique
not only in the way they have evolved but also
in what they do for the citizens of Texas. In
the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, immigrant
farmers could not secure insurance on their
property primarily because insurance carriers of
the time refused to offer rural coverage due to
the lack of fire protection. RVOS was originally
formed in 1901 as the Farmers Mutual Protective
Association. As the name indicates, neighboring
Even today Texas Farm Mutual insurance
companies write coverages that many other
carriers operating in Texas do not write such
as farm machinery, hay/feed/seed, other
agricultural products and homes and/or barns
in rural areas lacking fire protection. In fact, a
majority of the insurance a Texas Farm Mutual
insurance company can write must be classified
as rural under the strict requirements of Chapter
911, the insurance code that exclusively regulates
Farm Mutual insurance companies.
With the 85th Texas Legislature now in full
session, the 17 Texas Farm Mutuals are preparing
for and monitoring bill filings that have repeatedly
been advocated by competing companies in
previous sessions seeking to gain a competitive
market advantage through the legislative
process. This is done by promoting adverse
legislation that would subject Farm Mutuals
to additional expenses and other unwarranted
policy regulations. The undermining of Farm
Mutual insurance companies by competitors
would ultimately reduce competition in the
markets where Farm Mutuals are permitted to
write business thereby increasing costs and
adversely affecting rural policyholders. Also,
lawsuit abuse reform is a top priority in order
to help keep insurance available and reasonably
priced for all Texans.
Each Farm Mutual insurance company is
represented by individuals or legislative
committees who work hard during these times
to defend and preserve our Texas Farm Mutuals
against unprovoked aggressions or harmful
statutes so that we may continue serving and
providing the citizens of this great State with
affordable insurance coverage.
S přátelským pozdravem and thank you for
allowing RVOS to serve you.

RVOS Recipient of US Flag
Each year, Local Branch #31 of Catholic Life Insurance donates a flag to
someone in the community. Susie Strakos, a 40-year tenure RVOS employee
and a new officer of Local Branch #31 of Catholic Life, recommended that
this year’s flag be donated to RVOS Insurance. Both companies, RVOS and
Catholic Life Insurance, were organized in 1901. Since the two companies had
this in common, Susie thought it to be appropriate to make this donation to
RVOS. She is proud to be part of both companies.
