Grade 2 Homework Program Words of the Week (WOW)/ Mots de la semaine (MDLS). Every week your child will be given a list of spelling words. These will be written in their agenda and they can be found on the grade 2 website (http://mapleridgegrade2.weebly.com/). All students will be given time in class to copy down the spelling words into their agenda on Monday. If your child is absent on Monday it will be up to the parents to assist their child to find and copy down the words into their agenda. Every Monday the students will be given time, in class, to write sentences using these words. The number of sentences will begin at 2 and increase as the teacher sees fit. If your child does not finish writing their sentences in class, it will be sent home to complete. All notebooks are due back, complete every Friday. Every Friday we will have a spelling test on these 10 words. The tests (Yellow duo-tang) will be sent home and corrections will need to be made and returned on Monday. Every Monday we will also send home a math problem of the week (Red duo-tang). Please have your child complete this and return it every Monday as we will take it up as a class and a new problem will be given. If your child is absent on Monday, the problem will be available on the website. The weekly math problem will relate to what we are covering in class and it will require your child to use the problem solving method to answer the questions. Please see the information provided in the duo-tang for specific steps to answer questions using the problem solving method. We will begin the home reading program in October. Your child will receive 1 book per week (Orange duo-tang). Your child should read the book daily and complete a minimum of 1 response sheet. The response sheet will reflect the reading strategy we are focusing on in class. If you wish for your child to complete more responses, additional sheets for previously taught strategies can also be used. The at home reading program is a great time for your child to practice their fluency and comprehension. The reading will be sent home every Tuesday and needs to be returned every Monday. If books are not returned on time, no new books will be given until the following week. If your child is absent from school on Monday and Tuesday, new books will be given upon their return. If your child is not able to complete other school work in class, it may be sent home for completion. Our Grade 2 website is our primary means of communication with parents. Please check this site regularly as it is updated daily, it contains all homework and additional information about each individual classroom. It is also a great way to get in touch with your child’s teacher.
