Over-Thinking It? I love the world of books, articles, and learning. Does this offer any advantage to my standing before God? No. Jesus met many scholars of God’s Word that he said were missing the whole point. There were other teachers of the law who did follow him faithfully but their brainpower wasn’t the reason. The talents of the mind are also hindered by the sins of the mind: pride, self-sufficiency, cynicism, endless study with no outcome, wordy smokescreens. In a word it’s “over-thinking” something that in the end isn’t that complex. The Bible like the ocean can delight children that play in its sandy shallows; it can also float an aircraft carrier the size of a football field. Deep or shallow God’s Word is both profound and simple, accommodating any person who engages it. The question that follows “What does the Bible say?” is the very democratic question, “What am I going to do about it?” It is a question anyone can answer well. The answer will come in the form of action. Consider that most Christians down through history, like the rest of the world population, were illiterate. They didn’t even have their own copy of the Bible. Yet they lived for Christ, some died for him, they were faithful, and they managed to pass on the faith all the way down to our generation. It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t complicated either. Are you ready to take the jump into action? When a kid at the pool goes off the diving board for the first time, there comes a moment when the thinking and talking have to stop. You jump or you don’t. Having jumped, they will always rise to the surface with a smile that says, “What was I so afraid of?!” Good question, kid. Good question. Adam Hill is our Guest Speaker today.
