Principal’s News & Notes
Students in grades 2 and 4 will participate in the CogAT (Test of Cognitive Abilities)
during the week of January 30th – February 2nd. Parents are asked to make sure
students are in school and on time for these important tests after a good night’s sleep
and a complete breakfast.
Vacation requests for students in these grades will not be approved during the week
of testing.
WEATHER ALERT!
Just as a reminder, in the event of a two hour delay, morning activities at MES are
cancelled. This includes ensembles that typically meet at 8:00AM.
Also, kindergarten parents – please be mindful of the modified schedule for
kindergarten when there is a school delay:
AM Kindergarten: 11:00am to 12:45pm
PM Kindergarten: 1:45pm to 3:30pm
In the event that North Allegheny Schools are closed because of snow or other
emergency conditions, the official announcement is provided on the NA website:
www.northallegheny.org. The information is also placed on NATV Cable and
communicated to local television stations.
Families also have the opportunity to sign up for the District’s School Messenger
system, which allows you to receive a phone call and/or text message in the event of a
school closing or delay.
VALENTINE’S DAY PARTIES – TREAT INGREDIENTS
Philly Pretzels
Bleached enriched flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, potassium
bromate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, dough conditioner
(whey [milk], corn flour, monocalcium phosphate, L-cysteine hydrochloride,
potassium bromate), yeast
Allergen Information: Please be aware that our pretzels contain wheat and whey
(a dairy by-product). Both are known allergens. We also bake our pretzels on
equipment that could come in contact with seeds (poppy & sesame). Lastly, please
note that our pretzel dogs and sausages contain cheese.
Gluten Free Option: Glutino Pretzel Twists (hard snack pretzels)
Corn starch, potato starch, rice flour, soluble corn fiber, palm oil, sugar, salt,
cellulose gum, soy lecithin, yeast extract, sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid
pyrophosphate, citric acid. Contains soy.
ATTENTION: Parents who choose the gluten free option need to notify their
child's teacher prior to the Valentine’s Day parties. The PFA will need an
accurate count for purchase. Parents may also send an alternate snack instead
of opting for the gluten free pretzel.
Shenot Orchards Apple Cider
Apples, Less than 1/10 of 1% of benzoate of soda added
If you do not want your child to have these snacks, please contact your child’s
homeroom teacher.
Please remember that students are not permitted to include edible items (candy,
lollipops, cookies, etc.) in their Valentine’s Day Cards. We appreciate your
cooperation.
A Message about Strep Throat
It is not surprising that we often see cases of strep throat in children during the
winter months. Here is some information from the CDC to keep in mind:
Strep throat is caused by Group A Streptococcus (group A strep) bacteria, which
spread through contact with droplets from an infected person's cough or sneeze. In
addition to a sore and red throat, symptoms can include severe pain when
swallowing, a fever of 101 degrees or above, or swollen lymph nodes in the front of
the neck. Your clinician can swab your throat to quickly see if group A strep bacteria
are causing your sore throat; looking at your throat is not enough to make a
diagnosis. If the test is positive, antibiotics will be prescribed to help you get well
quickly, prevent complications, and keep you from spreading the infection.

Students who are diagnosed with strep throat may return to school after being on an
antibiotic for 24 hours. Hand washing is the best way to prevent all diseases
especially strep throat. Your school nurse is available to if you have any health
questions.
