KS1 and KS2 at Preston Primary School 2016-2017 Year 1 / 2 Year 3 / 4 Year 5 / 6 Autumn 1 Time Travelling Toys Driver Subject: History Value: Independence Children will explore the differences between toys that we use today and toys from the past. They will write their nonchronological report about toys that will be displayed at an exhibition at Paignton library. This is your Life Driver Subject: Art Value: Creativity Children will be creating a character, become portrait artists and authors. They will create a high quality text that includes a range of text types and genres involving their created character. Autumn 2 Night Owls Driver Subject: Science Value: Respect Children will learn about nocturnal animals found in Great Britain to produce an information text about one of these animals. Alongside this, they will learn about habitats and how we can support the wildlife found in our locality. Out of this World Driver Subject: Science Value: Creativity Children will be writing their own Space Adventure stories. They will learn about Space and our Solar System and research into famous people who have had an impact on our understanding of Space. Keep Calm and Save Lives Driver Subject: Science Value: Responsibility In light of a number of high profile incidents in the national news regarding coast safety, children will be enthused and encouraged about how to not only keep themselves safe at the beach and coastal areas but also how to help save the lives of others. They will create a high quality group book of reports. To Infinity and Beyond Driver Subject: Science Value: Independence To celebrate Tim Peake’s well documented stay aboard the International Space Station, the children will be learning all about space, discussing the possibility of life on other planets and creating descriptive writing based in the setting of space. Location, Location, Location Driver Subject: History/Geography Value: Creativity Children will be given the opportunity to market their own home. As well as learning about the history and geography of local areas They will become estate agents and will learn the skill of selling properties which includes persuasive writing, presentation and creating a business identity. Rotten Romans Driver Subject: History and Art Value: Teamwork Children will learn what is was like to live in Roman times, what they ate, their jobs and what they did in their spare time. Children will create Roman themed artwork and write a diary from the point of view of a Roman Soldier. Inspirational People Driver Subject: Religious Education Value: Respect Children will learn about a selection of inspirational people. Ranging from religious and historical figures to modern day heroes, children will be writing biographies of their lives. Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2 Baker’s Dozen Driver Subject: Geography Value: Responsibility Following a trip to Tesco for the Farm to Fork experience, the children will learn about the work that goes into producing the food we eat and where and how it is grown in the UK. They will write their own instructional recipes using local produce. Full Steam Ahead Driver Subject: History Value: Respect Children will explore the impact of Isambard Kingdom Brunel on our local transport system following a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway. They will learn about how important engineering developments have changed the way we live today. Into the Wild Driver Subject: Geography Value: Creativity Children to write their own poetry linked to our local environment (Dartmoor, seaside) taking inspiration from a local poet and storyteller who uses nature within their work. Coding Instrumental! Driver Subject: Music/Computing Value: Determination Children will use the computer program Scratch to create an interactive on screen instrument. They will then be challenged to create musical pieces using programming. Children will also learn about the different types of instruments and famous pieces of music. Harry Potter and the map of betrayal Driver Subject: Geography Value: Teamwork Children will become authors of short stories based on the characters from Harry Potter using the writing style of JK Rowling. Children will base their stories on a betrayal and how teamwork can be a very useful tool. The Christmas Truce Driver Subject: History Value: Respect Children will explore the causes and events of the First World War before leading a whole school remembrance service. Children will also design and create a Christmas decoration to be sold at the Christmas Fayre. Preston Against Sewage Driver Subject: PSHCE Value: Responsibility Children will be learning about our local sea-life and ecosystem. They will explore in-depth the impact of pollution on our local sea-life and what can be done to help. Following an in depth investigation, children will visit the Houses of Parliament and 10 Downing Street. Dragon’s Den: Make £5 Blossom Driver Subject: Citizenship Value: Teamwork Children will be given £5 to invest in a product with the intention of making a profit. All money raised will be donated to our focus charity Surfers Against Sewage. How to Train Your Dragon Driver Subject: History Value: Independence Children will explore the life and times of the Vikings. They will learn about their culture and religion and write their own story in the style of a Viking Saga. Minecraft Driver Subject: Computing Value: Determination Children will explore in depth coding and how it works through the use of Minecraft. They will create a virtual school which will be used to inspire some creative play-script writing.
