Caily’s Corner Bridget and Caily For those of you that read my last cover letter, I made it halfway through February without any major injury! I owe this to mother nature (or climate change); no snow and ice makes life as a klutz much easier. This newsletter goes to print on the 15th so I do have a few weeks left for accidents to happen! So after that great news, I have even better news. We have a new Community Relations team member (pictured above)! Bridget Simcox comes to us from our Glenview community, where she has worked since November 2015. She has worked in Senior Living for the past nine years. Bridget is a native of River Forest, where her parents and sister still reside. She is an alumni of St. Luke’s and Trinity, as well as a graduate of Marquette University. Bridget is excited to be transferring to Oak Park and to meet all of our wonderful residents, staff and families. Being closer to home means that she will spend more time with her wonderful husband and 14 nieces and nephews! Please join me in welcoming Bridget to Oak Park! Bridget is the 3rd member of Glenview to make her way to Oak Park (Silvia and I are Glenview alumni). I am sorry for our Glenview team to lose such a valuable member but it is another example of Belmont Village accommodating their employees and encouraging growth. Many of you know my story and others may not have heard it. I started out as Activities Program Coordinator in 2009. I continued that role until 2015 when I accepted a position as Executive Director in Training, followed by Assistant Executive Director, and then of course Executive Director here at Oak Park. Belmont encourages their employees to look to the future and to move their way up through the company. We have many rising stars in our midst, and we welcome anyone who is interested in growing with Belmont Village! If that weren’t enough, the Circle of Friends is on the move attending life enriching entertainment, art and informational activities throughout the building. Neighborhood News Did you know that neurons in the brain are a lot like people? If you text your BFF and he or she always texts you right back it makes you feel good and encourages you to maintain that connection. Neurons in the brain are exactly the same! Neurons reach out to each other and connect with one another. This is how learning takes place. If neurons stop “talking” to each other via these connections the connection will eventually dissipate and a person’s functioning will decline. In the Neighborhood we work hard to keep our residents’ neurons happy and talking to one another by engaging our moderate to late stage residents in all different levels of activity. These activities are designed to extend a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living as independently as possible for as long as possible! Employee of the Month Congratulations to Shirley Phillips for earning the March Employee of the Month award! Shirley is a full-time, second-shift PAL in the Neighborhood and has worked with Belmont for about six months. Shirley is a hard-working, compassionate person who is dedicated to caring for the residents, and always does this with a smile on her face. Her whimsical unselfconscious approach makes residents feel comfortable and accepted. Part of what makes Shirley a wonderful caregiver is her ability to observe the needs of her residents and take action, even if it means singing with the group to get the day started! Health Springtime is almost here and with it the time for Spring Cleaning. This is normally done by cleaning out closets, organizing, and throwing out junk. We can do the same with our diets, by throwing out junk food, processed foods and eating only fresh fruits and vegetables. We can spring clean our metabolism by clean eating, one meal at a time. Clean eating is a trend that we see everywhere these days. A lot of restaurants are getting back to basics called “farm to table”. They buy local foods that are fresh and not processed. The taste is much better and the food is more nutritious. Our foods at Belmont are fresh and local, so we have been eating clean at Belmont for awhile now! The term clean eating means to eat the healthiest options in each food group; embracing foods such as whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits and healthy proteins. It also means staying away from junk food and processed foods like hot dogs, bologna, donuts, candy bars, etc. Clean eating is not about weight loss but focuses on good health. Eating clean may lead to weight loss for some by eliminating unhealthy fats and sugar from the diet. If you eat fresh vegetables and fruits and stay away from fried foods and processed foods you will start feeling healthier. Eating local meats that are not raised on large factory farms is also healthier by eliminating antibiotics and hormones that are fed to large factory farmed animals. Here are some tips to start eating clean: • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of salty and sugary foods as a snack • Instead of eating sweetened fruited yogurt, buy unsweetened yogurt and add your own fresh fruit • Use butter from grass-fed cows instead of margarine or use avocados with your whole grains and veggies • Drink low-fat yogurt smoothies with fruit instead of eating ice cream • Eat snacks like pretzel chips, nuts, or crunchy vegetables instead of salty chips. Visiting Dogs Time for Saving Daylight Hello, Families and Friends! This is a friendly reminder that all dogs are welcome to visit the community, but we do ask that you keep in mind that they are not allowed behind the front desk or in the dining rooms at meal times. We also ask that any dogs who get too excited and tend to jump be leashed while walking through the community. Thank you! On the second Sunday in March, much of the country will be turning clocks forward one hour for the start of daylight saving time. But what is the history behind this annual ritual of “springing forward”? While the practice of adjusting daily schedules to follow the sun can be traced back to ancient civilizations, the idea of shifting time forward in the spring and back in the fall was first proposed in 1895 by scientist George Vernon Hudson in New Zealand, but with no results. It wasn’t until World War I, when the need arose to conserve resources, that daylight saving was officially adopted. Canada and much of Europe implemented it in 1916, and the U.S. followed in 1918, repealing it when the war ended. During World War II, year-round daylight saving, called “War Time,” was instituted for three years until 1945. After the war, cities were free to choose when they would observe daylight saving time, but this often resulted in scheduling confusion. Congress then passed the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which standardized when daylight saving would begin and end, but didn’t mandate its use. Today, Hawaii and the majority of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Leprechaun Lore The Irish fairy known as a leprechaun is a familiar figure during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Here’s more about this wee little man: • Leprechauns are shoemakers, and legends say they can be detected by the tap-tap-tapping of a tiny cobbler’s hammer. • Nowadays leprechauns are said to always wear green, but early tales have them dressed in red. • If a leprechaun is caught, he will offer three wishes in exchange for his freedom.
