NEW ENGLAND’S SPECTACULAR FALL FOLIAGE
IN THIS ISSUE …
BAR HARBOR’S GHOSTS OF PAST
By Heather Davis
In New England, October is the month of
chilly weather, brilliant fall foliage, wooly
sweaters, pumpkin lattes, the Patriots … and,
of course, Halloween.
In this month’s edition, we thought it only
befitting to write about the ghostly legends of
Bar Harbor’s past. We also share our recipe for
“hot” Lobster Bisque and talk about what’s
trending at Geddy’s “Down-Under” – both of
which will warm you up on those cold fall days
and chilly nights. In addition, we sadly wave
good-bye to the last of the cruise ships until
next season.
We hope that you’ll enjoy reading our latest
edition of Geddy’s Mooseletter! For next
month, we plan to feature some of the most
popular items trending at Geddy’s “DownUnder,” in anticipation of the upcoming
holiday season. Until then, happy reading!
BAR HARBOR’S GHOSTS OF PAST
By Heather Davis
Rich in history, it’s no wonder that Bar
Harbor has a colorful and mysterious past.
Just ask town residents.
OCTOBER 2016
Locals speak of strange occurrences and
ghosts that walk the streets at night, even
inhabit some of the summer estates, called
”cottages.” In the 1900’s, these lavish homes
were occupied by wealthy industrialists and
financers, who lived extravagant lifestyles,
which were not without scandals as well.
Join us as we take a look at some of those
tales. So, curl-up with a warm blanket in
front of the fireplace, and walk with us
through Bar Harbor’s past. The stories are
from Marcus LiBrizzi’s Ghosts of Acadia.
LEGENDS OF THE PAST
A charming New England coastal town, Bar Harbor has
an intriguing past & many mysteries. Perhaps, Jessica
Fletcher should have lived here, instead of Cabot Cove?
At the heart of many of these myths is the
old Bar Harbor Club, which was a prominent
and prestigious fixture in town – reserved
exclusively for the “Who’s Who” of the rich
and famous. Built in 1929 by J.P. Morgan,
this historic club was later abandoned for 20
years in the 1980s, experiencing years of
neglect & decay, before being renovated in
2009.
Prior to the club being built, the land was
reputed to be cursed. Early white settlers
referred to it as “devil’s half acre.” In the late
1800s, it was as an Indian Settlement Camp
for Native Americans, who had been
displaced from their homes. (cont. pg.2).

(cont. from pg. 1) As local property values
began to rise, the Native American Indians
were uprooted from this spot (their camp) &
relocated to a tent village at the present site
of the Bar Harbor Athletic Grounds.
Perhaps, it is for this reason, or for all of these
reasons, that the Bar Harbor Club retains its
reputation as one of the most haunted places
in town. There are stories of alleged murders,
accidental deaths & unexplained spirits. One
of these stories has to do with a young woman
who was mysteriously murdered at the Club,
after it had been abandoned. While her body
was never found (or the murderer), the young
woman’s perfume is reputed to sometimes
mysteriously fill the air of certain rooms.
People also claim to have seen her spirt
roaming the hallways late at night.
The Ledgelawn is presumed to be one of the
most haunted cottages on Mount Desert
Island. It was built in 1904 on the foundation
of older structures, with their own unique
mysterious pasts. This could explain why it’s
considered to be a landmark to the
paranormal. There have been many sightings
of phantoms floating freely through the air
and unexplained sounds of slamming doors &
faint heated arguments.
In its early years, the Ledgelawn was a private
residence of lavish summer parties and

elegant balls with the wealthiest of society.
Before the end of the Gilded Age, these
extravagant celebrations would come to an
abrupt end with Mary Margaret.
Mary Margaret was a rich & beautiful young
woman. Shortly before her wedding, she was
jilted by her fiancé & became despondent.
Dressed in her white wedding gown, she hung
herself from the 3rd floor rafters with her white
wedding veil. The site became known as room
#326, when the Ledgelawn was later turned
into an inn. Her spirit continues to haunt the
residence with many sightings of white
apparitions over the years.
Another story is told of an attractive young
maid, who was found dead at the bottom of
the back staircase in the 1930s. She appeared
to have been pushed to her death in a struggle
– rumored to have had an affair with her
married master. Because of his prominent
status, the alleged murder was quickly
hushed-up & never investigated, which could
explain why she continues to haunt the place
– slamming doors & arguing with someone in
the distance, perhaps her murderer?
These are only a few of the stories of Bar
Harbor’s haunted past. Truth or legend?
Perhaps, we’ll never know … or will we? What
are your thoughts? Share your stories with us.
