1. First, click options in the upper right-hand corner of the Outlook webapp. Then click “Create an
Inbox Rule…”
2. Click on “New…”
3. First, select “More Options…”
4. Apply the first rule, “If it includes these words in the subject…”
5. Specify the first word or phrase as [SPAM]. Don’t forget to click the add button on the right!
6. Then, do the following…
7. Mark the message as Read!
8. Also, Move the message to…
9. Your “Junk E-Mail” folder so that it doesn’t needlessly clutter your inbox.
10. Unfortunately, the way Outlook is set up, you’ll have to do this multiple times to ensure that all
of the mail marked either Spam, [Spam], etc. is marked for destruction via the proteasome.
Repeat all of the steps as necessary, with the exception of Step 5. Here, include a new word or
phrase you wish for Outlook to scan in order to mark spam mail as read.
Bonus tip: If you are sick of receiving continuous amounts of spam from student orgs, apple the same
steps as above, but in step 5, make the word or phrase [StuOrg].
If you want to still keep these messages in your inbox however, ignore step 8 so that you may refer to
them later if you please.
Congratulations, you’ve diminished the spam to your med school inbox by about 50%!
