History’s Greatest Event Today we celebrate the most important mystery of our faith, the greatest event in the Bible and all of history. Nothing before the events of Easter morning contains their full meaning, and nothing after makes sense without them. Jesus’ conquering of death validated all of his preaching, teaching, and miracles. Now his doctrine of love, forgiveness, faith, and baptism is confirmed, as is God’s definitive revelation for man’s salvation. In short, the resurrection proves that Jesus wasn’t simply a good man, a wise teacher, or a revolutionary. He was all those things and more—he was the Son of God. Without Jesus’ rising from the dead, you cannot explain his appearing to the women, apostles, disciples, and crowds before his ascension. You cannot explain the transformation of the timid and baffled apostles into powerful preachers or the conversion of St. Paul from a murdering Pharisee to a persecuted Christian. Without the truth of the resurrection, you cannot explain the courage of any of the martyrs. Indeed, the Romans and Jews took these martyrs seriously. And if either group could have produced a body of evidence or a convincing explanation to debunk the story, they would have. So today, set aside your Lenten focus on the mocked, beaten, and buried Jesus. Celebrate the resurrection. Christ the Lord—and Christianity—is a reality and a force. Rejoice! Reflect on the truth and power of this day, and allow God’s Son to open the tombs of your heart and life. —Fr. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Let us remember that these words of today’s responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that poverty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Kairos team will be going into Allendale Correctional Institute, April 26 through April 30, for the 21st time to take the word of the Lord to the residents. We will take approximately 38 volunteers to the prison to present the Gospel to 36-42 residents with the hope that the seed of the Lord will fertilize in some of these fellows. As you know, we take 7000 dozen cookies into the prison to give to all the inmates, 1300 guys, so that those not making “The Walk” will also have some connection to our Ministry. Please help us make this huge goal by making cookies and bringing them to the parish office by Tuesday the 25th of April, no later than noon. Cookies must be oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter or sugar. They can have no powdered sugar or fruit on top. It is helpful if they are packed in zip locked bags with a dozen in each bag. Do not use aluminum foil to wrap cookies Do not pack in large boxes, shoe boxes or pizza boxes are ideal Thank you for your help, prayers and donations both now and in the past “walks”. The 2016 Annual Report from the Allendale Correctional Institute was dedicated with respect and gratitude to the volunteer men and women of the Kairos Prison Ministries who have supported the men of ACI for 10 years. PARISH LIFE St. Gregory the Great Adoration Society Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel gives us an opportunity to spend an hour of prayer and give thanks for the many blessings we have received. This hour in peace and meditation with the Blessed Sacrament can also be an opportunity to pray for our friends and family who are sick or just need our prayers. Christ instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with mankind until the end of time (Jn. 14:18). Our wish is to have someone present for each of the 24 hours throughout the day in silent contemplation and reflection. We can use more adorers for this ministry. Please be generous with your time and sign up for one hour of adoration. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY In the 1930s, Our Lord appeared to a Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Jesus instructed her in praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet, promising extraordinary graces to those who would recite this special devotion. The Chaplet can be recited anytime but Jesus specifically asked that it be recited as a novena from Good Friday to the Saturday after Easter. Jesus also revealed to her the establishment of the Feast of Divine Mercy, held on the Sunday after Easter. Jesus told St. Faustina, "My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls and especially for poor sinners. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.” (Easter confession will satisfy that condition.) The novena prayer and chaplet leaflets are available in the narthex of the Church. To conclude the novena, you are invited to attend the "Divine Mercy Sunday" prayer service Sunday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church.
