First Couple of Racing Back Together
Rusty Wallace

By Gerald Hodges
The First Couple Of Racing, Bobby and Judy Allison, are together again
after three years of separation.
"We're going to cross the finish
line together," Bobby said.
The couple were first married in
1960 and had four children, Davey,
Bonnie, Clifford and Carrie. The entire
Allison family became involved in racing. Along with brother Donnie Allison,
Red Fanner and Neil Bonnet, they became known as The Alabama Gang.
All members of the Allison family
had great racing success from 1960 Until the early 1990's. Bobby won the
1983 Winston Cup Championship, but
he was forced to retire after a serious
crash at Pocono, Pa., during the 1988
season. It was several years before Bobby totally recovered all his memory
This tragedy marked the beginning of a
long line of family misfortunes.
After Bobby's accident, Donnie,
winner of 10 Winston Cup races hung
up his driving helmet.
In 1992, Clifford Allison died in a
racing crash. It had been four years
since Bobby's accident, but this was a
big blow emotionally to the couple.
Bobby and Judy's oldest son Davey was named Rookie of The Year in
1987 after winning two Winston Cup
events. In the next five and one-half
years he visited Victory lane 17 more
times in the nowfamotts No. 28 Ford. In
July of 1993, as he attempted to landhis
helicopter in the infield at Talladega, it
crashed. Passenger and friend Red
Farmer was injured. Red lived to race
again, but 32 year-old Davey was
killed.
The death of a second son was a
crushing blow. The family was grief
stricken. To compound matters, Bobby
lost the sponsor on his Winston Cup

Tue., Aug. 15,11 Winston Cup teams
practiced for nearly six hours on Daytona's 2 1/2-mile high-banked track.
The test, called by NASCAR, was to
study the car aerodpamics and horsepower. Officials experimented withaseries of aerodynamic modifications to the
carbody andrestrictorplate sizes.
"It's been a neat thing to get these
guys together to work on a common
cause for a change," said Mike Helton,
senior vice president and chiefoperating
officer, NASCAR, "They've all got
some good ideas and all of them have
chipped in to try and make some headway. We're feeling pretty confident that
we' 11 be able to come up with some rules
and regulations as it relates to the aerodynamics of a car that gives the restrictor plateraces some ofthe old feel ofracing that the competitors and the fans are
used to at Daytona and Talladega,
Hopefully, the testing will allow
NASCARtocome up with a b e t e style
of restrictor-plateracingin the future. At
least that is what several teams are hoping.
"As yon can imagine, the feedback
differs afittlebit from everyone, as the
length oftimes that guys havebeencompeting on these particular race tracks,**
Helton continued. "It's all been in the
right direction. It's beenlike 'Whatifwe
try this?* or 'Hey, I like this' or 'What if
we tried this now?* Some of the newer
guys are saying things that the older
guys have said 'mat's the way it nscd to
be, you jttst don't remember that because itne%*er was like that'
"When we finish here with this, it
doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be
very conclusive as to what we'll do
when we finish. But we want to collect
as much information and give as much
time to the issue as we can while we
have all these guys with it fresh on their
minds and pick their brains a little bit
and talk about a directiontogo. There's
certainly no source that's any better than
this. This is the best shot we've had at
working on a project all together for the
same reason and we*H creafjepretty good
results.**
