Song and Poem Book Blog
The purpose of this blog is to help parents understand the
reasoning behind our Song and Poem Book
Book.. (To be sent home this week.)
It is meant to be an aide to your kindergartener’s reading
development. It will contain familiar print from poems and songs
we have been/will be learning in our classroom.
When your child brings this book home, please read the songs and
poems with him/her. Ask your child which texts we have “studied”
in class and work on those. Your child will hear the flow of the
language and
d will be better able to predict unknown words when
reading themselves. Point to the words and follow along with your
finger to show the left to right sequence of reading.
Your Child can then practice reading the songs and poems again
until he/she is able to read them fluently and smoothly. Yes, they
have memorized many of the selections. But, hav
having
ing the child
look at each word and point to it while saying the text from
memory will help them learn sight words and reading skills. If
your child has difficulty reading/remembering a word, supply it, or
ask what makes sense. D
Doing
oing this, will help reading become a
thinking process. This is an opportunity to look and to act like a
“reader”. Don’t forget to review selections over and over again.
The Song and Poem Book is to be returned to school each day. It is your
child’s responsibility to bring
ring his/her book back and forth in good condition.
(I know that a few of our kids can already read. If that is the case, please adapt and enjoy!)
Look in the back of the book for ways to earn extra grabbers!
