UNM Press Now Distributor for Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press
ALBUQUERQUE—As of November 8, 2012, the University of New Mexico Press (UNM
Press) will serve as distributor for the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press (CIoA Press). Since it
began in 1975 as the publication unit of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA), the CIoA Press has worked to preserve cultural heritage through the
documentation, interpretation, and publication of scholarly archaeological research in places ranging
from Peru, Belize, the American Southwest, and California to Egypt, Jordan, Greece, Albania, and
China. Specializing in beautifully produced and scholarly vetted books, the CIoA Press publishes
approximately twelve titles per year in seven series that represent a particular signature, purpose, and
public. Acquisitions are monitored by an editorial board composed of distinguished UCLA and
external faculty.
“In the University of New Mexico Press, we have found a partner for distribution of our
books that understands the ins and outs of academic publishing,” declares CIoA Press Editorial
Director Willeke Wendrich. “We are very excited to work with UNM Press on moving the
publication of archaeological reports and interpretations into a new era, one in which online data
publication has become feasible and increasingly important.”
For over eighty years, UNM Press has specialized in scholarly and trade books on subjects
including anthropology, archaeology, indigenous studies, Latin American studies, American studies,
Chicana/o studies, art, architecture, and the history, literature, ecology, and cultures of the American
West. As part of its public outreach mission, the Press also distributes titles for other New Mexico
publishers including the Museum of New Mexico Press, New Mexico Magazine, West End Press, La
Alameda Press, and Fresco Fine Art Publications.
"UNM Press is pleased to be the new distribution partner for the Cotsen Institute of
Archaeology Press,” say UNM Press Director John W. Byram. “On behalf of our host institutions,
both publishing organizations share an ongoing commitment to making important information
available to the scholarly archaeology community and to the public at large. This will be a fruitful
collaboration for many years to come."
