PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Greetings and welcome to the March edition of the MHS Newsletter, the Red Hawk
Report
Update on Course Selection
I'd like to give a big thank you to the students who completed their course selections for
the 2017-2018 school year online. If your student has not selected their courses yet,
please contact the Counseling Office at 608-868-9560 ASAP to do so.
Class Changes in 2017-2018
As I shared during the Honors and AP parent meetings, changing classes in 2017-2018 is
going to be more difficult than it has been in past years. With the continued growth in
the number of students at MHS, I base staffing on the courses students select in the
spring of each year. As the schedule gets tighter, we cannot guarantee that there will be
room in courses if a student requests a change in the fall. Please make sure you have
spoken with your student about his/her selections and that they are comfortable with
those choices.
Goal Setting with your Student
Every year, when we hit the long weeks of February, March and April - it is not
uncommon for student motivation to 'wane'. I strongly encourage you to talk with your
student about their 3rd quarter goals and ask them how their classes are going. If you
did not make it to parent teacher conferences, please reach out to your students'
teachers with any concerns. Proactive conversations now are much better than reactive
ones in June.
Again, thank you for all of the support that the many parent groups have given the high
school during the 2016-2017 school year. It is wonderful to see the many ways parents
want to be involved in the student activities and support creating more opportunities for
our kids. Thank you.

MATH DEPARTMENT
The math department will be holding two UW System Mathematics Placement Test Review sessions on Sunday, March 12 and Sunday March 19 from 6:00- 8:30 in the evening. There
are 10 modules that will be split between the two sessions. This will be a great opportunity for
seniors to prepare for the math portion of their college placement test. The first placement test
in our area will be held statewide on March 25th. Check your student announcements for more
details.
FRENCH CLUB
Welcoming a foreign exchange student into your home opens thousands of new doors in a unique and
personal experience with another culture. The Busse family seized the opportunity to have such an experience when they welcomed Scott into their home this February, a 15 year old student from southern
France striving to immerse himself in an English-speaking culture. Scott stayed with MHS students Michael and Sami Busse for three weeks, where he followed various students around at Milton High School
and participated in the daily life of an American family. The Busse family has also hosted in the previous
years. To learn more about hosting opportunities and the many benefits involved, visit

Learning a new language can be a daunting, yet worthwhile, challenge. While any language presents
many new opportunities, choosing the right language can be a difficult decision. French can be a great
language to learn, and here are some reasons why. Firstly, French speakers are growing in numbers
throughout the world, particularly in Africa. In fact, the majority of French speakers do not live in
France, but in Africa. Scholars point out that Africa, a major continent with many developing countries,
could become a key player on the “world stage” in coming years. In addition, French is officially
spoken in nearly 30 countries, making it one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
Learning French also opens up unique opportunities to enhance your traveling experience by being
able to communicate effectively in a French speaking environment, which is useful in many popular
vacation sites like Switzerland, Quebec, Paris, and French Polynesia. Also, besides English, French is
the most widely learned language worldwide, opening doors to speak to both learned and native
French speakers. Finally, despite Spanish being more commonly taught in America, deciding to learn
French will make your skills more valuable (by virtue of its rarity) in certain fields of work. Finally,
even if you decide to learn a different language, French can easily be picked up due to its similarity to
many other languages, like Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. To learn more about the benefits of
learning French, visit http://www.fluentu.com/french/blog/why-learn-french-language/.
On March 22, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a meeting for students who wish to travel to France in the
summer of 2018. Going to France can be one of the most academic, invigorating, and memorable times
of a student’s life. Exploring different cultures can open your eyes to new ideas. The meeting will cover
the official itinerary for the trip, and will also give students a chance to do Early Bird sign-up for a
discount. The meeting will be held in Madame Bratz’s room (room 123). Hope to see you there!
MHS French Club members have been working on creating a Peace Garden in Schilberg Park since
last winter. Tuesday, February 28th, the members of French Club met with horticulture and landscape
experts from Rotary Gardens and UW-Whitewater to get some mentoring on their garden plans. The
Peace Garden will be located on the left side of the parking lot entrance to Schilberg Park. The
garden’s shape will be a hexagon. Certain flower boxes will be seasonally changed, and we plan to
decorate with lights around the holiday time. Not only will French Club be participating in the building
and maintenance of the project, but other Milton High Clubs might be interested in helping as well.
More details will be available as planning continues. We hope to have a rendering and garden plan
sketch to share soon! If you would like to participate in the garden, or are interested in donating,
please contact Madame Bratz at MHS.
“The goal of the MHS Peace Garden is to unite the community of Milton against acts of violence in America and abroad.
We hope that by coming together, we can honor those who serve, remember those we have lost, support those who promote
peace, and empower future generations to grow a better tomorrow.”

JANUARY HAWK HONORS
Each month staff recognizes students that have demonstrated the positive behaviors of the MHS Hawk Habits
program - perseverance, responsibility, adaptability, and leadership. These students receive a certificate from
the staff that nominated him/her and they are invited to a breakfast provided by Hawk Habits.
The following students were nominated for the month of January:
Kari Dewitt: Kari has worked hard in English and has moved to a more difficult class. She is an excellent student and
gives it her best effort. Nominated by: Mrs. Kligora
Casey Ploszaj: Casey has always been a great benefit for the iCadet program, but his excellence has really shown
during the month of January. His work on the LED Tetris project has been phenomenal due to his adaptability and
perseverance. Casey's ability to adapt to changing parameters during the planning phases of the project have
ensured that things have gone smoothly now that he's in the thick of the project. His perseverance has also proved
valuable, as some aspects of the project have been very challenging at times. I am very much looking forward to
seeing this project completed, as it will no doubt enthrall and inspire those who see it. Nominated by: Mr. Watson
Jill Munley: Jill is a leader in our guided study hall. She sets the tone for the rest of the class, and they follow her
example. Her leadership, even though sometimes sarcastic, has helped me ease into my new job here at the high
school. Nominated by: Mr. Gavigan
Caitlyn Collins: Caitlyn has worked extremely hard to do well in Biology. She willingly stays after school for study
groups and extra help. She also tries to help others understand and will ask for help for them as well if they are
struggling to ask. Caitlyn always has a cheerful disposition and willing to work with anyone. She is a great lab
partner, doing her share of work and communicates well with her partner.

Sydney Miller: Sydney is a dedicated Captain on the forensics team. As a Senior, she knows what it means to
welcome new members and model diligence while having fun! Nominated by: Mrs. Wessely

skills. I am very lucky to have her as a student! Thanks Ati for making my job easy.
Nominated by: Mr. Heilman
Gia Digennaro: Gia gives her best in Spanish every single day. She is an active participant in class, and she asks
very thought-filled questions about what we are studying. Additionally, she is very supportive of her classmates and
makes the most out of every learning opportunity. Gia, thank you for all you do. ¡Gracias por todo tu trabajo en
clase! Nominated by: Señora Evans
Hunter Saynor: Hunter II, I am so proud of you for your new and improved motivation, attitude and work ethic. You

Kailey LeCaptain: Kailey- there are no words to express the gratitude I feel for your kindness and dedication
towards the student you tutor every day. You show tremendous leadership, adaptability and perseverance in this
unique situation. Every day you make a difference and make the world a better place. Nominated by: Mrs. Sroda
Hunter Wiersma: Hunter has done a great job at working on his project this year as an iCadet. His work on the
Lumoplay interactive projector has been amazing. Even when things got bogged down, he persevered through
and still had a burning passion for the project. He has been extremely responsible when handling school district
property and has resisted the temptation to make special modifications here and there. I am proud of the work
that Hunter does for us in the iCadet program and I'm glad he's part of our team. Nominated by: Mr. Watson
Robert Ames: Robert has made a great transition into a more rigorous English course. He is excelling because of
his strong work ethic, study skills, and commitment to learning. Nominated by: Mrs. Sundlin
Dalton Shea: Dalton is an outstanding leader in woods class. He leads by displaying appropriate behavior, superior work ethic, and safe dedication to detail. Additionally, he leads by helping his peers whenever they need
assistance. Dalton is AWESOME! Nominated by: Mr. Randall
Becky Ambrose: Becky has shown tremendous effort this school year, and her positive demeanor cannot go
without mention. Everyday Becky enters class with a smile on her face, and she brightens my day just with her
presence. Becky shows diligence in completing her assignments, and her positive attitude sets an example for
others. Way to go, Becky! Keep up the good work! Nominated by: Mrs. Greenleaf
Brooke DeSormeau: Brooke made time to meet and speak with a couple of Ukrainian girls who may be adopted
and may eventually end up at Milton High School. Nominated by: Mr. Thies
Abby Vidruk: Abby is an outstanding leader in French Club and is also a wonderful example in French class. She
is passionate about learning, tenacious in pursuing her goals, organized, and reliable. I can think of no student
who works harder or who has a bigger heart. I am so proud of Abby. She embodies all of the Hawk Habits in everything she does.Nominated by: Mrs. Bratz
Scott Mansur: Scott is a funny, respectful, hard-working leader in the classroom. He is always willing to volunteer
or share an experience to help expand class learning. He is one of the most respectful, caring and compassionate young men I've had the pleasure of teaching. I love that Scott approaches every day with zest and enthusiasm. Wherever life leads him he will continue to be a big success. Nominated by: Ms. Stieve
Kaylee Getchell: Kaylee has been a tremendous help with Club UCS the past few weeks. We had a cheese curd
sale that she was able to help facilitate the start, clean up and in between! She organized students to help "staff"
the Penny Wars and Polar Bears and sent numerous emails to the group to ensure we had students helping out.
Kaylee has clearly demonstrated responsibility and leadership in her efforts to take on the role of not only helping out herself, but persevering to get others to help as well. She also readily adapts to any changes that come
her way! Nominated by: Ms. Stanke
Samantha Fassl: Samantha proves to be a leader in Contemporary Fiction by offering insightful interpretations of
literature that lead to interesting class discussions. In addition, she has assisted a new student to Milton who
joined our class one day while I was at a conference. Samantha took it upon herself to get the new student a copy
of the book we are reading and all other necessary materials. Nominated by: Mrs. Harvatine
