2010 Foundation Highlights
Contributions to the Library Foundation
from individuals, corporations and
foundations made it possible for the
Library to provide many of the important
programs that patrons have grown to
know and appreciate through the
generations. In fact, the Foundation
invested nearly $1.6 million in 42
Library programs and services benefiting
more than 107,000 people in 2010.
Additionally, Foundation-funded
resources, such as collections,
databases, and technology, were used
1.87 million times.

few of the many initiatives Foundation
gifts supported.

In 2010, major support of Ready to
Read, an early childhood literacy
initiative, came from The Herbert
Simon Family Foundation; Lilly
Endowment Inc.; PNC Foundation;
Junior League of Indianapolis; The
Library Fund, a fund of The
Indianapolis Foundation; Target; and
The Rotary Foundation of
Indianapolis. Thanks to these and other
generous donors, the Library’s capacity
to serve home and faith-based
daycares increased by nearly 300
percent. This support helped to expand
Digital Littles, an interactive,
technology-based story experience for
children aged 3-5. The Foundation’s
2010 investment in Ready to Read
exceeded $100,000.
More than one million books were read
by nearly 55,000 participants during the
2010 Summer Reading Program: Read
to Feed. Children enjoyed this year’s
approach, which allowed them to earn
points for reading and then donate their
points to trigger a food donation from
The Kroger Co. to Gleaners Food Bank.
This program was presented
by the Comcast Foundation, with
additional support from 92.3 WTTS;

Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award

at Central Library.
honored Scott Russell Sanders, Ray
Boomhower, and Greg Scwhipps. 100
percent of the $64,000 in proceeds
from the event will be used to
support Library and Library Foundation
programs, as well as future years of the
Indiana Authors Award. In addition to
the dinner, more than 650 book lovers
from throughout Indiana enjoyed a full
day of complimentary author lectures
and publishing workshops at Central
Library during the Indy Author Fair.

Authors Award is made possible by the
generosity of The Glick Fund, a fund
of Central Indiana Community
Foundation with additional support in
2010 from Barnes & Thornburg LLP and
John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
The Library Foundation received a
major grant from the Allen Whitehill
Clowes Charitable Foundation to better
equip the Shelby Branch of the Library
to provide 21st century library services
by adding public computers and
reconfiguring various public service
areas. The renovation includes
environmental technologies that will
not only help the building operate in
a more cost effective manner and
contribute to the Library system’s
long-term financial sustainability, but
also allow it to serve as an educational
center for preserving natural resources
through efficient use of energy. The
Library Foundation received support
from The Glick Fund, a fund of Central
Indiana Community Foundation and
The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation
to improve services for job-seekers. Five Job Center mobile
units, each consisting of five laptops and accessories
dedicated to workforce-related programming, will be
deployed to five branches in 2011. Programs will also
be offered at Central Library.
The Library Foundation’s 2010 Beth Tindel Award was
given to Tami and Jeff Edminster. Tami is a Program
Specialist with the Library and Jeff is a member of the
Library’s IT team. The award was created to honor
Library staff members who support the Foundation
in a variety of ways.
