DAILY BULLETIN 5 Editors Pedro Nunes Rodrigo Martins Soares WELCOME TO MADEIRA 2013 16th International Bridge Festival Madeira Funchal, November 4-10, 2013 Cutting Stone! The German – Icelandic team Stonecutters lead the Teams’ Tournament after winning all matches yesterday night by 17.87, 19.37 and 11.67. They have a 6.59 VP lead with 55.45 out of a possible 60. The English team Stanford also won all of yesterday’s matches by 16.46, 16.90 and 16.46. They are now second overall. Team Ruth won all of the first matches by 14.68m 14.96 and 18.83. They are just 0.38 VPs behind Stanford. There are 63 teams competing in our Teams’ Tournament. You may have noticed some thing different this year. We are using the new continuous VP table (20 VPs per match, with decimals) and the screens are showing the results of the tables as they end their matches. After all the tables have finished you are able to see the classification and where you will sit for next round. Today is a very busy day. After making the most of the morning, we must have a nice lunch and play bridge for the rest of the day and night. There are 120 VPs to be awarded to whoever deserves them. Bridge Festival MADEIRA Seeing the Light by David Bird The Open Teams began and I was commentating on Bridge Base Online in the computer room next to the playing area. The play at Table 1 for the first two matches was scrappy and may not have impressed the internet kibitzers. I consoled myself with a large glass of Coral beer and resumed my seat for the third match, Van Hoof against Stonecutters. Immediately there was a big deal: Board 17 North Deals None Vul ♠AJ4 ♥J63 ♦Q82 ♣QJ52 ♠K83 ♥AQ ♦ A 10 5 ♣ A 10 7 4 3 N W E S ♠2 ♥ 10 8 7 4 2 ♦97643 ♣98 ♠ Q 10 9 7 6 5 ♥K95 ♦KJ ♣K6 West North East South Vergoed Eiriksson Topiol Ingimarsson 1 ♣ Pass 1 ♥1 Pass 1 NT2 Pass 2 ♦3 Pass 3 ♣4 Pass 3 ♠5 Pass 4 ♣6 Pass 4 ♦6 Pass 4 ♥6 Pass 4 NT7 Pass 5 ♣8 Pass 6 ♠ Pass Pass Pass 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. transfer showing spades 18-19 bal. Game forcing relay 4 or 5 Clubs and 3 spades Establishing spades as trumps Cue-bid Roman Key-card Blackwood 1 or 4 Key-cards 5 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA Iceland’s Sveinn Runar Eiriksson upgraded his hand and therefore opened 1♣ instead of 1NT. South’s 1♥ was a transfer response and the 1NT rebid showed 18-19 points. (North would rebid 1♠ with a 12-14 balanced hand). I did not note down the auction because I was relying on the BBO archive records to show all the details of the bidding and play. Annoyingly, they are not present this morning, so the remainder of the auction is my best recollection. Anyway, South ended in 6♠ and West led the ♣2 to the 8 and South’s king. All depended on picking up the trumps for one loser. I explained on the internet that the percentage play is to cash the ♠K first. You have to play one or other honour, to pick up a singleton ♠J, and playing the king allows you to pick up ♠A-J4-2 with East. Throstur Ingimarsson instead played a trump to the queen on the first round. ‘He is still alive,’ I wrote on the BBO commentary, ‘but there is no reason to finesse on the next round.’ Declarer promptly led a low trump from his hand and finessed the 8. ‘Wow!’ I typed. ‘How did he find that play? I will have to ask him after the session.’ Play continued and the last board to be presented on BBO was 22. (They play 23/24 first, so that when they revert to 17 there will be comparisons with the Closed Room). I warned the kibitzers that I might have to leave early, so I could be sure to catch Ingimarrson, but the last board was a good one: Board 22 ♠ A K 10 8 5 3 ♥J64 ♦— ♣J652 East Deals E-W Vul ♠4 ♠Q2 N ♥AQ9 ♥K73 W E ♦AK7532 ♦J964 S ♣ K 10 4 ♣A983 ♠J976 ♥ 10 8 5 2 ♦ Q 10 8 ♣Q7 West North East South Vergoed Eiriksson Topiol Ingimarsson Pass Pass 1 ♦ 1 ♠ 3 ♦ 3 ♠ 5 ♦ Pass Pass Pass You expect to lose a spade and a club, but the trumps are 3-0. Hans Vergoed, from the Netherlands, showed how to brush this inconvenience aside. He ruffed the second spade and played the A-K of trumps, followed by three rounds of 6 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA hearts. When he exited with a trump to the queen, South had to open the club suit or concede a ruff-and-discard. To give declarer a guess, he exited with the queen. What should Vergoed do now? He has to guess whether South has ♣Q-J or just the ♣Q. The Principle of Restricted Choice states that one honour (queen or jack) is roughly twice as likely as both honours. Vergoed duly rose with the ♣K and finessed the ♣9 to land the contract. The same text-book play was found in many other matches. I rushed to the Table 1 Open Room and found only two players still there. Ingimarrson had left. Back into the corridor and I could see someone walking away. ‘Excuse me. Did you just play 6♠ on Board 17?’ ‘Yes, I did.’ ‘How did you guess the trump suit right?’ ‘The club lead, when my partner had bid clubs, was suspicious.’ ‘I see, but why did it make you play trumps that way? Isn’t it better to cash the king first?’ ‘It was the only clue… the club lead.’ I did not find these answers very clear and remained puzzled until the early hours of the following morning, when I woke up and started to think again about that slam. Suppose that West has nothing special in the trump suit and no obvious side-suit lead. Will he not spend quite a few moments considering which suit to lead? When instead he quickly leads a card in dummy’s main suit, this is perhaps the action of man who expects to beat the contract with two trump tricks. It had taken me a long time, but at last I think I had understood declarer’s successful play! Sometimes you hit the brakes too late and that lands you in sky-high contracts. This board is from the pairs’ second session. Board 5 North Deals N-S Vul ♠ A 10 7 6 ♥A964 ♦J83 ♣32 ♠QJ2 ♥ 10 8 5 ♦74 ♣KQ864 ♠853 ♥K7 W E ♦AQ5 S ♣AJ975 N ♠K94 ♥QJ32 ♦ K 10 9 6 2 ♣ 10 As East, I opened the bidding with 1♣ (we play an 11-13 NT, so, with this hand, I should open 1♣ and rebid 1NT). My partner bid 1♠, which was a transfer to 1NT. After my 1NT rebid my partner looked at his club length and upgraded his hand to 2NT. When I looked at my extra club length I upgraded my minimum and bid 3NT. South led the ♦2 (third, fifth) and when dummy came down I recognised the board as a book problem of Hugh Kelsey, who is (in my opinion) the greatest bridge writer who has ever lived. [Ed: This bulletin’s Editors opinion is that DAVID BIRD is the greatest bridge writer ever!] To make 3NT the opponents should give you quite a helping hand. First of all you need to develop a spade trick. Therefore the spade honours should be divided and it must be South who takes his spade trick first, while his diamonds aren’t high yet. Secondly, North should have the ace of hearts and also must discard a diamond on the clubs. The last condition on top of the first two is that South must not switch to hearts when he comes in with his spade honour. I took the first trick with the queen of diamonds and ran the clubs, ending in hand. To my pleasure I saw North pitching a diamond on the fifth club. Now I played a spade, which South unwisely took with the king. A second round of diamonds followed by my ace and I continued with another round of spades. North took his ace and tried to reach his partner by playing a small heart but I went up with the king and claimed my nine tricks for the full 100%. I saw Kelsey smiling at me. Sometimes it just works out the way you want and that´s what makes bridge a marvellous game! 8 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA Program 2013 Saturday 09.00 Free morning 15.00 Open Teams Tournament – 2nd Session 21.00 Open Teams Tournament – 3rd Session 15.00 Open Teams Tournament – 4th Session 19.30 Final Results 20.30 Closing Dinner and Prize Giving (09/11/2013) Sunday (10/11/2013) 9
