Welcome to Honors English 3-4!
A quick summer guide for parents and students
Dear Parent/Guardian and Incoming Honors English 3-4 Student,
I am delighted that you have chosen to partake in the challenges of Honors English 3-4.
In order to prepare you for the upcoming school year and to keep your mind engaged over the summer, you
have a summer assignment which will be due Tuesday, August 12th. (The assignment has been included in the
letter; however, if you should need another copy, you can visit the school website or retrieve a copy from the
school main office beginning July 14th.) The assignment consists of three activities: reading and annotating the
novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, creating flashcards for the Rhetoric Glossary and completing a literary
analysis essay.
Many students like to be prepared for the first day of class; therefore, I have provided a list of required
materials you will need for Honors English 3-4:








Blue or black ball point ink pens
An editing pen of a different color (i.e. red, purple, or green-any color that contrasts with blue or
black)
Notebook paper
Three composition books (One for each of our major literature units)
Five classroom folders (One for general purposes, one for AP Language preparation and three for
each of our literature units)
Highlighters (several different colors)
Post-Its (3”x3”)
A planner (highly recommended)
We will be reading a variety of texts during the school year. It is assumed that students enrolled in Honors
English 3-4 will continue to remain in the honors program throughout their high school career; therefore, it is
important you begin to build your own library to be used as a resource. Several of the texts you will read
during the year will be provided for you; however, you will need to purchase a copy of the novels Frankenstein
by Mary Shelley, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Black Boy, by Richard Wright to analyze and
annotate. All texts, provided or purchased, should be saved and filed for future use in subsequent honors/AP
English courses.
If you have any questions or would simply like to introduce yourself, please do not hesitate to contact me via
email. Since school is not in session, it may take a day or two for a response, but I will respond.
Enjoy your summer! I look forward to meeting you.
