MAIN PARTS OF A COMPUTER: There are four main parts of a
Computer: (1) Central Processing Unit, (2) Monitor, (3)
Keyboard, (4) Mouse.
HOW WILL YOU START A COMPUTER?
To start a computer we should follow
these steps: Switch on the electric (AC) power
supply
 Switch on the UPS,
 Turn on the power switch of the CPU,
 Turn on the power switch of the
Monitor,
Just wait few minutes when computer
display windows environment.
HOW WILL YOU SHUT DOWN A
COMPUTER?
At first save and close all the programs,
 Click on Start menu,
 Click on Turn Off computer,
 Then you will see: ♦Stand by
♦Turn off
♦Restart
 Click on Turn Off
Just wait few minutes, your computer will
automatically shut down.
 Finally switch off the Monitor,
 Switch off the UPS,
 Switch off the electric (AC) power
supply.

WHAT IS FOLDER?
The folder is an empty place; you can
use it to store things on the computer. You
create your own folders for your
documents. There are two types of folder:(1)System Folder,
(2) User Folder
HOW TO CREATE A NEW FOLDER?
To create a new folder we should
follows these steps:  Right click on free space
 Go to New
 Click Folder
 Type a name of the folder
 Press Enter key from keyboard.
HOW TO OPEN A FOLDER?
There are three processes to open a
Folder.
1. Right click on the folder → Click Open.
2. Double click on the folder.
3. Select the folder→ Press Enter key.

To delete a Folder permanently
without moving it to the Recycle bin we
should follow these steps:  Select the Folder,
 Then press Shift+ Del from keyboard,
a warning appears prompting you to
confirm the file deletion.
 If you want to delete, click yes
otherwise No.
HOW TO RESTORE A DELETED FOLDER?
To Restore a deleted Folder we should
follow these steps:  Open the Recycle Bin.
 Select the Folder.
 Right click on Folder.
 Click Restore.
HOW TO RENAME A FOLDER?
There are three processes to rename
a Folder. They are: 1. Right click on the folder→ Click
Rename→ Type a new name → Press
Enter key.
2. Select the folder → Press F2 key from
keyboard→ Type a new name→ Press
Enter Key.
3. Select the folder→ Click on Caption
area→ Type a new name→ Press
Enter Key.
HOW TO DELETE A FOLDER?
There are two processes to delete a
Folder. They are: 1. Right click on the folder→ Click delete
option → a warning appears prompting
you to confirm the file deletion→ if you
want to delete, click yes otherwise No.
2. Select the folder → Press Delete key
from keyboard→ if you want to delete,
click yes otherwise No.
NOTE: - All the files & folders which are
deleted are moved to the recycle bin.

There are two processes to Copy a folder:1. Right click on the folder→ Click on
Copy option.
2. Select the folder→ Press Ctrl + C key
from the keyboard.

There are two processes to Cut a folder:1. Right click on the folder→ Click on Cut
option.
2. Select the folder→ Press Ctrl + X key

HOW TO CHANGE AN ICON OF A
FOLDER?
To change an icon of a Folder we should
follows these steps:  Right click on the Folder.
 Go to properties, this will open Font
Properties window.
 Select Customize Tabs.
 Click on ―Change Icon‖ option, this will
again open ―Change Icon for Folder‖
window.
 Choose any one icon.
 Click OK.
 Click Apply.
 Click OK.



To hide a folder we should follows these
steps:  Right click on folder.
 Go to Properties.
 Select General tab.
 Active the ‗Hidden‘ option.
 Click Apply.
 Click OK.
Now open any window.
 Click View tab
 Go to Options Button.
 Click on Change folder and search
options.
 Select View tab.
 Active ‗Don‘t show the hidden files,
folders or drives‘ option.
 Click Apply.
 Click OK.

PARTS OF A WINDOW SCREEN:
DESKTOP: - The 'Desktop' is the first image
you see on your screen when the computer is
switched on. The objects on the desktop
represent different computer functions. The
Desktop can have several components. The
main components of the Desktop are: 1) Icons
2) Taskbar
(1) ICONS: Icon is a small image that
represents a file, folder or program. The
text below each icon is the name of the
Icon. When we rest the mouse pointer on
an icon, a rectangular box appears. This is
referred to as Tooltip. It gives a brief
description of the Icon.
By default, there will be 5 icons on the
desktop. They are:
 My Computer
 My documents
 Internet Explorer
 Recycle bin
 Network
MY COMPUTER: - This is the icon which
represents all the files & folders which can
be used in the system. It is used to access
the drives, folders & files on the computer,
i.e. Floppy drive(A), Local Disk (C), Local
Disk (D), Local Disk (E), Local Disk (F),
CD/DVD Drive, Printer, Control panel etc.
MY DOCUMENTS: - This is the default
storage location for the files created in the
windows.
INTERNET EXPLORER: - This is an
application used to browse the internet.
RECYCLE BIN: - This is a folder that
stores all the files & folders deleted from
windows temporarily, which can be
restored again if needed.
NETWORK: - This is an application which
display all the computers connected in
network with our computer.
(2) TASKBAR: - The rectangular bar that
runs horizontally across the bottom of the
screen is called Taskbar. The Taskbar has
the START menu on the left & the
Notification area on the right. We can start
an application using the start menu.
Notification area holds system icons that
allow for functions such as changing the
time & Volume of the Computer. All the
open applications are available on the
Taskbar.
START MENU: - In the lower left-hand
corner of the Windows screen is the Start
button. When you click on the button a
menu will appear, which we will call the
Start menu. This menu gives you access
to all the different parts and functions of
the computer.
DISCUSS ABOUT CONTROL BUTTON?
The sizes of the windows on your
screen can be changed so that more
windows are visible. Following is a list of
common
features
that
can
be
implemented on all windows.
MAXIMIZE: - Left-click this button to make
the window as large as it can be—it
should take up your entire screen.
MINIMIZE: - Left-click this button to shrink
the window down to a small button that
will appear in the task bar
RESTORE: - Left-click this button to make
the window smaller without minimizing it.
CLOSE: - Left-click this button to close

Notepad is a simple text editor of Microsoft
Windows. It is one of the products in
Accessories group. It can be used for writing
notes. The default extension name of

WHAT IS CPU?
CPU stands for Central processing

controls the operations of all other
component, such as memory, input and
output devices. The main parts of a CPU

WHAT IS CU?
CU stands for Control Unit. Everything the
computer does is directed by the control
unit. Although it does not perform any
processing on the data, the control unit
acts as central nervous system for all
other component of the computer.
WHAT IS SOFTWARE?
Software is a program or set of
instructions that tell the hardware what to
do. It is the combination of Data &
Instructions that forms the building blocks
of applications.
Ex: - Notepad, Paint, MS Office, Windows
XP etc.
WHAT IS ALU?
ALU stands for Arithmetic Logic Unit.
All calculations are performing in the ALU.
ALUs are designed to perform the four
basic operations – add, subtract, multiply,
divide. It‘s also performing logical
operations, such as less than, greater
than, equal to etc.
WHAT IS INPUT DEVICE?
Data and instructions are entered into
a computer through input devices. An
input device first converts desired input
data into a suitable form (0, 1) and then
feed into the CPU.
Ex: - Mouse, Keyboard, Joystick, Light
Pen, Trackball, Graphic Tablet, Touch
Screen, Microphone etc.

memory

seconds for calculations that we take
hours to complete. It can perform
millions (1,000,000) of instructions and
even more per second.
 Accuracy: - The degree of accuracy
of computer is very high and every
calculation is performed with the same
accuracy. The errors in computer are
due to human and inaccurate data.
 Diligence: - A computer is free from
tiredness, lack of concentration,
fatigue, etc. It can work for hours
without creating any error.
 Versatility: -It means the capacity to
perform completely different type of
work.
 Power of Remembering: - Computer
has the power of storing any amount
of information or data. Any information
can be stored and recalled as long as
you require it, for any numbers of
years.
 No IQ: - A computer cannot take its
own decision as you can. It is you to
decide what you want to do.
 No Feeling: - It does not have feelings
or emotion, taste, knowledge and
experience.
 Storage: - The Computer has an inbuilt memory where it can store a large
amount of data. You can also store
data in secondary storage devices
such as hard disk, floppies, CD, DVD
